RGL announces upcoming Summer seasons and preseason events
posted in News

April 29, 2021

Not long after the conclusion of the Spring seasons, already 6s Season 6 and Highlander Season 9 have opened registration, and made preseason cups for new map testing available for map testing.

Both gamemodes have voted and will be extending the humiliation time (mp_bonusroundtime) to 10 in the RGL config.

6s

The 6s season brings the most overall changes to the map pool. Firstly, a rotation for the KoTH maps has been established. For this season this will mean that koth_bagel_rc3 and koth_product_rcx will be played in Season 6, koth_bagel_rc3 and koth_clearcut_b15d in Season 7 and so on. All three will remain in the pool for Invite pick/bans.

Secondly, cp_villa will be making an exit, with its replacement to be determined in a 6s map cup on May 15th and 16th. Being tested for the slot is the following:

Signups and further details for the test cup are available here.

For the main season, important dates are as follows:

  • May 6th- Invite team registration deadline
  • May 10th- General team registration closes, Invite qualifiers begin (if needed)
  • May 14th- Last day for Invite qualifiers (if needed)
  • May 15th- All division placements finalized, week 1 matches scheduled, division fees due (extension will be granted for qualifier teams)
  • May 17th- Start of regular season
  • June 27th- Rosters lock
  • July 11th- Last day for regular season matches (excluding Invite)
  • July 18th- Last day for Invite regular season matches
  • August 15th- Last day for playoffs matches

Full details including extra steps for Invite teams are available on RGL's blog post.

Highlander

Season 9 of Highlander is also upcoming. Alongside that, they'll be running their own preseason cup as a three round tournament over May 22nd and 23rd. The maps tested are:

  • koth_cascade_v2_b5
  • koth_ramjam_rc1a
  • pl_borneo

Full details can be found on RGL's post.

For the main season, this is the timeline:

  • May 21st- Challenger/Invite registrations close
  • May 29th/30th- Challenger/Invite Qualifiers
  • May 31st- General registration closes
  • June 2nd- Invite fees due (extension granted for qualifier teams)
  • June 7th- Regular season start
  • July 12th- Rosters lock
  • July 19th- Last day for regular season matches
  • July 26th- Playoffs start
  • August 23rd- Last day for playoffs matches

Full season details can be found on RGL's blog post.

now that the thread has been made, I can move on to substance.

allow me to quote myself from a thread a few weeks ago:

https://www.teamfortress.tv/59107/rgl-s5-post-season-survey#6

mustardoverlordyeah I didn't play last season so I can't personally view the survey and judge it but:

having player surveys does not a community league make, if a) the surveys only cover a narrow range of options pre-selected by the admins, and b) there's no guarantee that the results of the vote will be honored

it's a giant leap to go from "should villa be replaced" to "ok everyone wants a new, barely tested map instead", and it's another example of how rgl is a fake community league masquerading as a real one.

put any of those maps against adding bagel like jetz said, or granary for that matter, and see which one the community votes in, I think we all know how that would go.

can you stop introducing shit fucking maps no one in invite wants to play and just put granary back in or at least put pro badlands into testing? why do you refuse to put either of those maps in the pool every season, is it because you know they will outvote any abortion of a map you put in?

How many times does this thread need to happen LMAO

Makka aren't you the head admin or something now, I hope you're smart enough to realize before replacing a map you should do a confirmation vote to see that people actually want the new map over the one it's supposed to be replacing

Imagine you take a poll and 50+% say a given politician should be replaced, and then because they got voted out you ban them from running in the primary.... In what world does that make sense

a minor issue is also with the koth rotation which is cool i guess, but most people assumed that one map would be swapped out every season with another map, like villa being swapped with bagel but 5cp. however, why the fuck is the map cup a day before the regular season starts? basically gives no one any time to actually try it out. kind of what bear was saying, you also screw yourself over if those maps are all shit.

just have bagel or older 5cp maps change with villa or host the cup way in advance instead of out of nowhere.

doikualright rgl how much are these mappers paying y'all

None, but I have asked for testing. This cup is not what I personally imagined the testing to look like.

segamwi mean... mannbase not that bad...

Appreciate but the map is still a wip and will not be better for competition than maps that are already established.

However, that's not necessarily what people are upset about. Based off what I've read in this thread (remember I don't follow the RGL scene) Players have not been given ANY time to even look at these maps. While mannbase is slightly more established, mist, workflow and craneway are all maps that I doubt most people have even heard of. This is especially bad when the RGL regular season starts the day after.

Recently ozfortress ran a 2 day cup forcing players to run mannbase. Our regular season is still a while away so it meant players had time to digest the map. If RGL really wanst to be testing VERY WIP maps for the regular season they would atleast do this.

Mappers don't want their maps placed blindly into leagues, it's a bad choice for the development of the map and for the competition for the league. By all means place new maps in league, but this is not the way to do it.
I have one more point which is more a vent than anything.
I think that mappers have been getting a bad wrap because of decisions like these from leagues. Remember it's not the mapper that placed their map into the league. It's the league that did.

Sorry for messy formatting etc at work on mobile.

Edit: I'd like to make it clear I am very grateful for this testing. Having leagues notice hardwork is a massive reward for mappers.

FactsMachineWhy the fuck is Invite STILL playing a different map pool? Someone explain.

Invite having an extra map makes sense because of the pick/ban system. And the idea that Invite teams get to break open some new maps (like Bagel over the last couple of seasons) is solid.

I really don't like how they removed two maps in order to get Bagel and a map that will be decided literally days before the season starts. From what I had heard, the plan was to cycle Villa out for Bagel and I think everyone wouldn't have batted an eye. But this is...something else entirely.

just some "non-ideal" clipping I found on cp_mist...
https://imgur.com/a/WLYXRf2
ill try to get in contact with the map makers for anything else I find, but thought it would be good to share with everyone here too.

I can say mannbase is well polished in the clipping area tho, but the mood of this thread seems more "rGL StUPiD" than "im glad theres new content, even if it is rough around the edges" :/

Not a fan of these map moves, would have rather seen reckoner or even log jam get considered. Of course bringing back granary or badlands would be worth considering as well.

I also don't like the fact that they mention Viaduct will be pulled the following season.

Use granary/badlands pro and let your pug service that you've been working on forever be used to test new maps.

Getting these new maps tested in a cup is a good idea and will help them develop. Turning this around into a full season of play.. well the community response to that is clear enough already. Do I think craneway is ready to be played in a quick cup? Sure, that's pretty low consequence if it sucks. Do I think it's ready to be played in a league for a full season? I don't know, which is probably too close to "no" for most people. Whatever map is chosen will probably voted out as a knee-jerk reaction next season, even if it has serious merit. That would leave it like cardinal, a map that was probably very improvable, but got screwed over by league decisions.

Villa was played one time during the regular season and one time during playoffs. How does RGL not have any fucking clue that a new map is going to have the exact same thing happen to it, especially after ZERO time has been allotted to it being added and the season starting. If badlands or granary were back in at least it would see some playtime from teams with older players, these new maps aren't wanted by anyone though.

RGL is gonna use the argument of us picking shit maps once during regular season to fuck over other teams who don't practice it as reason to go "yea see, invite DOES play those shitty maps!!"
