Do I regret spending as many hours as I did in highschool and my first two years of college on tf2? Yeah I wish I had spent more time on homework and more important stuff, balancing games & real life is important.

As a whole though do I regret playing tf2? Definitely not, I've met so many awesome friends through the game and grown so much as a person (and a teammate/leader), I'm super glad I played tf2 and didn't grind league of legends or dota and just get tilted every day like pretty much every other kid who plays games does lmao

Also, if you dedicate any large amount of hours doing something I would hope you find some value in it and get something out of it, to spend thousands of hours just to regret it all is fucking sad. Even if you didn't achieve anything with it, be happy for the good times and entertainment that you've gotten out of the game.

Personally, I don't regret the first 2.5-3k because I genuinely enjoyed it, but I do regret not fully quitting it around 2016. I stopped having fun with it at that point and just kept coming back every few months to mindlessly pub or play lobbies without any enjoyment whatsoever

i agree with everything here. i wish i hadnt played like 130 hours/2w for all my time in high school, it quickly devolved into an addiction. I wouldn’t trade the friendships I made in this game for anything, though. shoutouts to domthewhiteguy, donovin, glop, brokenpony, and cres.

tf2 has unironically brought much value to my life. i love it and will forever cherish my time with the game.

I feel like everyone here knows that the time they spent on TF2 could have been much more valuable if they had spent it on stuff like Homework/Social stuff but at the end of the day, no time is wasted time if you had fun with it, it's just about balancing it properly. Is spending 120h every 2 weeks on a videogame a healthy choice? Probably not.
While playing this game I've made experiences and met people that will stick with me for years, and i'm thankful for that, even if, up until 2017, my social life suffered heavily because i would cancel on friends just to play tf2/scrims/pubs/lobbies

I don't regret my time here, it tought me a valuable lesson about balancing your time and what your time should be spent on, I would rather learn that lesson as a young kid where it can develop and fix itself once you grow up and have actual responsibilites rather than have it become a serious problem when im an adult.

On one hand I met a lot of people who I developed very good friendships with and am happier for having met, on the other hand my face to face social abilities were somewhat stunted by spending so much time online in my early teens. I regret taking tf2 so seriously. If I could go back, I wouldn't tell myself to quit, but I would probably tell myself to just stick to pugging or low scrim teams and to go out more and be more social. TF2 is an amazing game and I've had so much fun with it over the years, but realistically that social stunting continues to affect me years later.

The last 9 years... I sorta made a choice to play mostly one game and that was tf2. I would play other stuff, mostly single player games, or I would go back and play old school stuff for fun, I actually got a little sucked into buying and playing the mini consoles like the snes and recently the sega gen. I wanted to replay super mario rpg, earthworm jim, krirby all stars and all that good stuff. I also got a PlayStation classic just so I could mod it. I really wanted to play heart of darkness and odd world in hd. For the most part any time aside from tf2 was spent on classics before the Xbox 360 and ps3 era. But for the most part I chose tf2 as my main multiplayer experience, so I don’t feel bad about my hours. I still did college and now I work. Time wasn’t really wasted, unless you are one of those people that think gaming in general is a waste of time...

I feel like I was always able to balance real life with gaming pretty well luckly. I definately had those rare periods when you grind the fuck out of TF2 for 2/3 weeks in a row, they were very rare though. I have about 3200 hours on this game, a couple hundreds of which afk, considering I've been playing it since 2011 it should come down to about 6 hrs per week in average. Do I regret any of it? Absolutely not, if you play a game for so long and so much it should always mean that you truly enjoy it.

I think generally it's a yes and no for most people. Yes, because you could've developed better during those pesky teenage years if that's when you played. But on the other hand, if TF2 is like your only outlet, then I think that's fair game to say it hasn' really been so negative. Not to say the stigma of how you socially develop by playing video games instead of, you know, socializing isn't negative. If the only alternative you have is this Bhutanese poop trading game that we all play, and more importantly, if you still can enjoy it, then I'd say it's fair.

met some of the closest friends in my life right now, been inspired to pursue a career that I genuinely have passion for and is sustainable (something I was doubting would ever happen and something that kept me from dropping out in high school), and have the opportunity to travel around the country/globe to meet even more new interesting people and put on shows that make hundreds of people smile. I would sink all 6k hours in again in a heartbeat.

Not really, I used to until I really thought about it. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all of my hours in TF2. I’m glad I don’t spend my life fucking my liver and brain binge drinking every weekend. Long term most of us will be much healthier than the average person. The only thing I regret like most people in this thread is taking TF2 more seriously than education. I could have been much better off than I currently am. I’m not struggling to get by but I’m also not making big money like most of the people I grew up with are.

on top of all my gaming, I was thinking about it, I'm making a new pilot I wanna pitch to Swear Net, the guys that make trailer park boys, I figure I'm in good shape for time spent. The hard part is dealing with the financing for new computer and camera gear in the future.

Pros: I've met a handful of really cool people I still talk to after meeting them years ago.

Cons: Killing myself is almost instant but I'm too big of a pussy and would rather just be sad and my TF2 friends are the only people that care.

I regret 90% of the time I've played this game because I would have still met these people and not have wasted a lot of time I could have spent on alcohol and substance abuse.

definitely not.
Picked up the game when I was 15, now I'm 22, I went from a teen to a young adult all while playing this game, during the good and the bad times tf2 was here whenever I felt like booting it up and I (almost) always had a great time with it.
I love both the serious and competitive aspect of the game as much as the super goofy casual / community side of it (although now with the bot crisis and all I dont play pubs as much as I used to). the difference of feeling from the stress and intensity of a grand finals to some laid back custom gamemode server full of people from all over the world sums up very well the way I feel about this game.
I met awesome friends through tf2, travelled (and will travel again, poland 2020 hype) across europe thanks to it, learnt how to manage a team of people, and in general improved both as player and a person through it.
And yea, some people in the community are just walking trash cans but who gives a fuck, I'd rather enjoy my time with the awesome people instead which is still a very vast majority of the community. We always tend to remember the bad over the good and thats why all the drama sticks to us and makes us think the community is rotten to the core when its really not.

So yea, thanks tf2, and thank to all of you from the community, I'll keep playing this game for as long as I can :D

definitely not.

Well yes and no.
In short..it helped me get through hard times in my life..but in contrast it also made other daily life pressures more challenging (my grades for example dropped pretty drastically).
As soon as I stopped playing, I found my mental wellbeing drastically improved, I’m not dissing the game, it’s more so the way I handled it, was damaging.
