iv been playin quake this week and then i started thinking about how in games with some degree of depth and complication, like TF2 or quake, the playerbase seem batshit dumb as a rock and do not care, but in a game that has no depth whatsoever like Overwatch and Fortnite, every single player, whether casual or competitive, take it absolutely seriously, try their absolute hardest, pick the right classes to play, etc

wat do u think causes a thing like this? i don't think its money because these casual players don't earn any money playing this, but if this game offers more depth than Overwatch, why is it that ur much more likely to run into a friendly pootis than a friendly Winston?

in my opinion this is a big contributor on why this game failed

its simply because overwatch is heavily restricted in terms of how many people are on a team and which heroes they can play. they are forced to work together up to a certain point. there is also a reporting system that people will use to report you for throwing. in tf2 there are no rules and nobody gives a fuck.

in fortnite you're not rewarded for being an idiot you just die and the game just goes on without you. in tf2 you get the serotonin flowing whenever someone doesn't kill you as a friendly heavy because its a big xd.

I feel that overwatch had it's potential but it lost it's chance for me. I still play it some times but much like the rest it's very stale and even though they tried adding into the community server browser and how customization works it still doesn't seem to affect the outcome.

Blizzards best bet is to get Overwatch 2 out and see where it goes from there.

I feel like #5 is right regarding why TF2 doesn't really have as many players actively engaged with playing the objective/winning. OW/Fortnite are games in which winning is the core source of enjoyment as a player, it sucks when you lose outright, winning feels great, and matches that are closely fought but still lose give a similar amount of enjoyment as winning (the Near Miss effect).

In TF2, there is less focus on winning and more on enjoying the moment (through taunts, funny interactions, and sIcK PLayS). For Quake, there is a strong emphasis on your individual skill and the second-by-second moments throughout a match. In both of these games, winning is a plus but not the emphasis.

funhaver1998in my opinion this is a big contributor on why this game failed

I would hesitate to say that this game 'failed'. It was a key inspiration for many shooters, particularly ones that are class-based, cemented itself within gaming culture, and revolutionised the F2P system (for good or for bad). Whilst the game has certainly fallen off in the past few years, as to be expected, the game by all accounts is/was a tremendous success for Valve. Even the competitive scene is something to behold; a community-led esports scene sustaining itself for a decade without the support of the developers is very hard to come by, and something I don't think we'll ever see again.

I think that there is more to say and discuss here, but I'll save you the torture of another fucking nerd essay from me.

Want a serious answer? I've been playing since 2010 ish and people absolutely used to care and tryhard in pubs/lobbies/whatever. You'd see people trying their ass off in community servers, shittalking each other and bragging about being good. The game's been out for 12 years though. Everyone that cared stopped caring. When you have zero incentive to try and win and when you've been playing the same thing for 1000s of hours you stop giving a fuck. Add onto that the fact that everyone that was a toxic teen a few years ago is now well in their 20s and doesn't really care about winning or losing in a video game and well, there's your answer

I think the death of bigger community servers killed tryharding. If you see regulars on a server every day, you sometimes wanna flex on them, or if they're good/better than you, you want to impress them.
When I was new the tf2 I used to hit up the lotusclan texas serves like mad and there were a few ugc players who would always fucking stomp all over me. They're the reason I discovered comp in the first place and put in effort to imrpove. I kinda wish they could see me now.

everyone cared soooo much when LAN was a thing and there were clear bragging rights for being in top IM, Main or Invite. even when i was a bean headed kid in like 2013, the moment games for ESEA Lan would start tf2mix and pugna are immediately barren because everyone is posted up in a mumble with like 30 people watching lan together. The moment day 1 or whatever is over the pugs/scrims started back up for hours and everyones trying to play a class based off who went nuts in the lan games. There was toxicity but we'll find that everywhere

srsly tho, we were on some real crack back then lmfao. you know its extra when people would BRAG about who their mentors were and who reviewed their demos lol it was sooo fun

so essentially,

valve: lets make a good game that can survive on its own, but we wont give it comp support (tf2 comp is born, the SSBM of first person shooters, it wasnt designed for comp, a fast arcade shooter with some depth and balance. ) hopefully we can experiment with this game for future titles, csgo for example with our source code.

blizzard: ha, so they want this style of game with comp support, lets see if we can rip apart valve's underground scene by making our version with major comp support and milk it, hell lets make a 2nd game later on, why not manipulate a desperate player base not aware of how good they got it? yea they are fersure not a major esports, but they are small and support each other, they have lots of awesome things. they really don't appreciate what they got. lets take them for a ride.

edit: also, *blizzard rubbing hands menacingly* this should be a good revenge plan, I mean shit, how could we had known dota would had been a big deal? I mean shit, we just thought people really liked playing world of warcraft for years with no major changes or alternative game modes.

gemmwhat on earth makes you think tf2 was a failed game

its very obviously failed. the game is universally regarded as boring, stagnant and shows no possibility to even get back to a state where people were already saying that the game was dead. we wish we were back up there. prem games fell down from 1.5-2k viewership down to struggling to get 100 and the number is only decreasing. unless youre actually going to the LAN and u wanna get drunk with a bunch of weaboos IRL, no one gives a shit if there was one or not.

i dont even kno the casters names anymore or what they even sound like

idk i started playing comp TF2 kind of late but a lot of the time i have been playin i wanna say a good 40 pct of my scrims on either my team or theirs the guys just go pootis or some shit and start trollin or losing their mind because they dont care at all. wat ive gathered from it so far is that ppl just play this because they dont really know what else to play because they started when the game was interesting and now that its not they don’t kno what else to do.

TLDR
no twitch views
boring
no reason to play
never gonna be money in game - never mattered to me but it clearly does to some ppl
only gettin worse

anyway hooli hit the nail on the head so i gues i just gotta wait till im 40 for a proper game to come out

yeah this is some real shit and now when theres ‘shit talk’ its just forced as a desperate attempt to make the game slightly more interesting because its dead and no one cares.

its what happened in my first season where the guys talking mad shit to my teammates calling them all sorts of racist shit towards russia, they lose the div and the guy just says nahh bro we were just joking to make it more interesting.

You just don’t understand what I’m saying.

No I’m pretty transparent and I really don’t care. I said the truth. People wonder why oh why, but in the end all I’m saying is that people play those games because they have potential chance to play a game that has a league with support from its developer. If they pick a game that they can drop they look at the most fruitful one. Maybe they play a week, maybe they go play leagues, then they wanna go pro. With tf2, you really can’t go that far. It’s pretty limited. So yea.

It’s literally the underground valve scene vs the major broadcasted blizzard esports poo

Aka people will try for games that are relevant and they won’t for the ones that don’t mean anything too them.

key word to me here is 'casual'. If I want to tryhard I go comp, but tf2 pubs are just fine with a relaxed attitude. If I had to sweat on every pub I'd play a lot less.
