Why are those browser benchmarks still used?

I've seen a fair amount of users use browser benchmarks to measure browser performance. However I don't understand why browser benchmarks would be that useful. A fair amount of them (e.g Octane, JetStream, and Kraken) use numbers with no (seemingly) assigned meaning and the explanation of their benchmarks feel vague to me. It just seems way more reliable to check memory (the core program, extensions, and HTML/JavaScript objects themselves), CPU and GPU usage, and the source code to compare performance. Not all browsers function the same, however, so it's really not a good idea to compare them directly anyway.

EDIT: I meant browser benchmark sites, not browser benchmark themselves. I need to stop mistyping titles…

check CPU and GPU usage to compare performancecheck the source code to compare performance

This man is so far ahead of all of us smooth-brains, it's unbelievable.

Why would you want a number to compare performance when you can just browse for a few hours manually while constantly checking CPU and GPU usage or just reading the entire fucking source code and using your superior brain to guess performance from that? Only idiots need benchmarks.

Meanwhile I wouldn't even know if higher CPU usage is better or worse.

I wouldn't rely on -funroll-loops for something so critical... Compiler writers are smart, but gentoo users go even further beyond. If you aren't modifying your browser's source to manually unroll its loops, you'll be missing out on those critical FLOPS, meaning horribly paced refresh times.

Why am I laughing? Apologies, my friend. It’s just that as an INTJ, these illogical benchmarks of yours…well, I find them to be amusing.

What’s that? A simple number quantifying the performance of a web browser? Not necessary. I’ve already calculated its exact load on my GPU and CPU in my head from a mere glance at the source code. Mmm…perhaps a little more teraflops per megashit next time…

I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Right so I just realized that I wrote the wrong title. My post is talking about those browser benchmark sites (like JetStream), and not browser benchmarks themselves (like the two uBlock Origin memory benchmarks).

I don't even watch linus tech tips that often. Most of my knowledge comes from the internet and actual experience with it (like curl).

I've Typed Curl Into My Terminal Once Or Twice It ` s No Big Deal Thoe Haha

dude seriously just stop, no matter what you say you won't be able to convince people you aren't talking out of your ass, the solution here is to stop saying stuff so authoritatively and accept that maybe people are right and you actually don't know what you're talking about (as jay z said if everyone else is crazy, you're the one who's insane)
