FunsCan you justify why you’re not vegan when in the modern day it’s been proven that a plant based diet is sufficient, and animals are bred, mistreated and killed for nothing more than how they taste?

I don't view animals as worthy of moral consideration. This entire line of thought assumes that they are, and if you don't ascribe to that idea the entire argument falls apart.

Plant based meat alternatives are pretty good as far as the ones I have tasted. If they were more convenient I would likely be fine with making the switch.

it's kind of expensive and i have to save pretty much every penny i can at the moment. it also seems hard to find places to eat when you're out and about (i do live in a big ass city though so it probably won't be as hard as other places). i wouldn't be opposed to going vegetarian because i think the industry behind meat is fucked and would like to help reduce my impact on the system but what post #4 said is right. also maybe im just cynical and pessimistic but the meat is going to be made and sold with or without me buying it. veganism also includes stuff like not wearing leather and wool(?) and i'd have to redo my entire wardrobe because i wear a lot of boots and sweaters lmfao.

Funshowever, it turns out that the soy farming we’re talking about here is mainly that which produces feed for livestock in the meat industry. The soy farming for foods such as tofu is actually generally not part of the same system, and is in fact not even from South American mainly

From what I have heard, soy that is fed to animals is primarly produced to make soy oil or tofu and the waste of this process is then used to feed animals and represents only a fraction of what they eat.

There is no ethical consumption under capitalism so I shall eat whatever I want until we overthrow the system.

Also I am here for a good time, not a long time.

I see people saying that it's expensive but how is meat cheaper than vegan food? I am a poor student and I eat mainly vegan/vegetarian just because I can get way more portions for my money. At least here in Sweden a bag of dried beans/lentils makes more food per $ than any meat I have found.

fast food/ordering out in my experience is cheaper if you're comfortable with eating meat/animal products

Might be correct, I always cook at home since I have no money.

Fast food is about the same cost (unless you are only living off of the $1 menu) but the problem is time. Fast food is ready to go now and you are able to do other things where as actually cooking and doing all of the prep and cleaning takes a lot more time and this is where the real cost comes from. Making dinner could take an hour or more, going to Mcdicks takes less than 30 min.

Vitamin b-12 is found almost exclusively in animal protein, there's some sea-weed and things that have small amounts and is used to make the vegan b-12 supplements. Without supplementation a vegan diet is nearly impossible long-term because you're missing essential nutrients, but with it it can be at least as good as a diet including meat.

I am not vegan, and I like eating meat because it tastes good.

I prefer to consume animals breed and killed in good conditions. For me it means natural food, no forced feeding (like ducks), life in the open, painless kill.
I also like products made of cattle leather or bones, because if one is going to kill cattle to eat, one might as well use everything the cattle provides. Such products also tend to be longer lived (eg. leather jackets)

I believe these animals are alive because of us. We do not hold any duties towards them but it's not an excuse to be cruel.

I just wanna put this out here because people seem to be talking about both at once

Veganism is the exclusion of ALL animal products. That includes meat, fish, dairy, and everything inbetween down to honey.

Vegetarianism is abstaining from eating meat and fish. Dairy is still consumed (pizza! yay!). Generally you'll also be avoiding products such as fish oil, and gelatin (most common marshmallows, jello, gummy bears).

Sometimes I'm to depressed to cook for myself so I get a burger to try to make myself feel better

also most vegan "fast food" options I've tried are expensive

I also think that I can still love animals and eat animal products, if you want to be ethical about it find a source for your food that actually gives a shit about what they're doing and the animals they keep.

I have sensory issues when it comes to taste. If I get rid of meat I get rid of a ton of the foods in the small list of things I can stand eating.

i dont eat much meat but im not willing to cut it all out

climate impacts of one person are negligible. 100 corporations produce 71% of all emissions so theres no point in me cutting out meat. ill continue to vote for and support politicians who are trying to legislate against the massive polluters, which will make billions of times more impact.

StylaxOut of interest, did your uni also put on another guest speaker to present the other side of the argument?

It was more of a case that Ed was going to multiple places to talk and universities happen to be areas of interest as they have space to host. It wasn’t arranged by the university but actually managed by a society (I forget which but likely VegSoc)

Similar situation though for real. Its not like I don't try either. I force myself through an exposure a day with a foods I'm uncomfortable with just so I can go to a restaurant without having a panic attack. Plus I already pay a lot of my already shitty income to a dietician and therapist. I want to feel normal. I don't care about a cow I want to have a nice dinner date with my girlfriend and someday raise my kids in a healthy normal household where dad doesn't freak out at the sight of a taco. Dietary restrictions will seriously impact my quality of life and I'm barely in a place to go eat a hamburger as it is.

i was vegan for 2 years and couldnt maintain a healthy weight while exercising/gaming all day, i ended up losing way too much weight.

stopped when i was riding my bike home down the street from a friends, I did a sprint and felt something go wrong in my heart. I honestly felt like I had a small heart attack or something. now I eat lean meat/fish and kerrygold etc and I am way healthier. my macros were way off being vegan, like 80% carbs

i don't eat meat all day but my body just prefers having 30-40% of my diet be meat. learned the hard way

why do i have to justify eating meat? shouldn't i have to justify purchasing meat that is being farmed inhumanely? if the reason you're vegan is because inexpensive animals are mistreated you should eat animals that are free-range. I think it's weird how someone can logically understand Darwinism while also saying mistreating animals is immoral.
