Ascent.NA to prep with bootcamp for Insomnia65

August 13, 2019

With the countdown to Insomnia65 getting closer by the minute, Ascent Esports has announced that its North American team will be dropping by London prior to the annual European tournament for a preparatory bootcamp, courtesy of FACEIT.

Ascent.NA will be the sole team representing the North American continent, competing at Insomnia65, which will be the second Insomnia for an American Ascent roster. Insomnia65 will also be the fourth Insomnia for the Ascent banner and the first Insomnia featuring both Ascent.NA and their European counterparts — Ascent.EU.

We spoke to TF2 veteran Ma3laa, owner of Ascent Esports, who gave us the synopsis on the backstory behind the bootcamp.

Alongside playing in the i65 tournament itself, our team was interested in a bootcamp before the event to be as prepared as possible. I was about to start looking for places that could host us and I conveniently got a message from samiface the next day saying she was able to hook us up with a practice area at the FACEIT HQ in London. So a huge thanks to her as well as FACEIT staff for putting this bootcamp together. Big shoutout as well to our partners Marketplace.tf as well as TBA for supporting the team in our travel to the event, as well as a thanks to the community for their support.

Ma3laa also discussed the prospect of having two regional teams under the Ascent banner being together at the event.

It's exciting to have both of our teams at the same event for the first time, and who knows if an opportunity to do this again will happen in the future. We've been supporting teams in both regions for almost two years now, and to have it finally culminate in all twelve of them being at an event playing against each other will be a really awesome moment.

While there's less than ten days until the European LAN action begins, there's still time to donate to the Insomnia65 Fundraiser! Donating will help provide funding not just for the event's prize pool, but also for Ascent.NA's travel costs, with perks and exclusive prizes available for donors. The fundraiser will continue accepting donations until this coming Friday, August 16th.

I feel like the fundraiser really hasn't been plugged enough. I had trouble finding it myself, as theres no official announcement thread even though its the biggest/most important fundraiser. Besides that it wouldve been nice to ask b4nny to plug it, given that he has the largest audience in tf2. Surely even though hes not playing himself he would be interested in giving this intercontinental event all the exposure it can get, for the sake of "growing" tf2.

b4nny is still just pretending the lan literally doesnt exist. mr "do everything you can to grow the scene" doesnt actually care unless it benefits him

That's really fucking childish of him. Yes, he doesn't "owe" anyone but hes definitely a prick considering all his "efforts" and "intentions" to grow the competitive tf2 scene but he ignores the biggest tf2 event of the year because he dodges.

nice friendly little notice that b4nny/froyo havent announced whether they're attending lan yet (and even seem determined to dodge giving an answer) and i bet there's still b4nny subs waiting for his fundraiser who would otherwise donate.

added to the ascent shit above, they're literally an active detriment to a lan half way across the world at this point

ascent has been really impressing me with how professional theyve been running this whole thing, wow.
hopefully theyre actually making a little bit of money to justify all the time they spend on managing the org and the players and its not just another project that solely relys on peoples passion to keep going.

A bit unfair to b4nny unless you've approached him already and he declined, I think the fundraiser could have been wayyyy better supported by Ascent players by doing more streams, having !fundraiser in their stream title etc.
Our fundraiser got way more donations when we started streaming with !fundraiser in the title (https://streamlabs.com/eemes1000 btw :3 ).
Out of all of the Ascent players, only Yight really streamed much at all during the run-up to lan and he only had a small part of the fundraiser at the bottom of his stream and didn't really mention it.

gemmadded to the ascent shit above, they're literally an active detriment to a lan half way across the world at this point

if banny were banning people in his chat for mentioning it he'd be an active detriment, but I think it's fair for someone who streams professionally to not want to mention a fundraiser which won't benefit them in any capacity. Somewhat disrespectful, maybe, when it is the biggest TF2 event of the year and should get all the support the community has available, but that's kinda unfair reasoning too. It makes sense.

im p sure ive heard members of froyo during streams say they arent going to europe, now b4nny may be too much of a bitch to give an official answer but hes also too much of a bitch to scrim ascent while still claiming to care about growing the scene

I'm sorry you consider the fundraiser to be poorly promoted, It's a shame because a lot of work has been put into this by myself, Uberchain, soda and the rest of the content team. You say there isn't an official thread: here's the newspost for it which I've tried to keep bumped and up to date, I've also regularly been keeping the official i65 thread updated with news of the event and the fundraiser, we've had nearly daily tweets, had a stream promoting it and it even got a mention on the official Team Fortress blog. So I'm not really sure what more we can do.

We've had a setback in having to cut at least a portion of the fundraiser short so we can give Belong the money for the fundraiser as I know keeping it open as long as possible will help, we're working on making sure we can at least keep raising money for Ascent past the deadline this Friday, as always keep your eyes peeled on the official thread or our Twitter for news on this

I don't get how not scrimming the strongest of the other NA teams benefit him. Or is he just not scrimming you to screw your lan prep?

ArchRhythmSo I'm not really sure what more we can do.

every time i log on i scroll down to recent discussion and ignore everything else. maybe other people use the site differently, but that's why i haven't seen it. the only fundraisers i knew about were for ora and top5, since they're pinned. in the past, news posts have been pretty haphazard

Froyo haven't scrimmed since ESEA Grand Finals. Their roster isn't changing for RGL, very little point in going that hard in offseason. They could really help Ascent to prepare for LAN, but its their choice and I don't think its fair to call them dicks for wanting to take a break. Froyo has 6 players, why aren't people getting mad at yomps or nursey for not wanting to scrim?
