Speaking of pubs, do y'all want to play a pub tonight that's listed in the Servers tab?

Whoever's bored and just wants to play around could meet in like 30 minutes from this post (around 6:30PM Eastern) on this server:

connect 103.214.111.90:27915

Looks like no custom downloads and server has in title "Nocrit Nospread NoCrash" in it's name. So it seems pretty good.

this hasn't aged well

I mean f2p isn't the problem, complete lack of maintenance is. I wouldn't mind if tf2 never got a content update again, but as long as it has thousands of players like it continues to have (who buy items so the game is still profitable), it's the responsibility of the developer to keep it playable.

Sure... we know Valve doesn't care. But we have the right to hold this shit to their faces and tell them they're failing their customers. For the sake of making the point if nothing else.

I can deal with the hackers, at least there is a chance to vote kick them. Its the lagbots totally destroying servers that is more of a problem.

profitable ? if the game was profitable it would still be mantained
take away the idlers and the alt accounts to cheat, bots and whatever and you´ll get a very low playerbase count
take 6 developpers working full time to the game making an estimate of 100k a year, when does this game generate this kind of revenue ? not lately when all these latest updates did was milk the last drops this game had of revenue, shitting all over the place on the performance and competitive aspect of it

TF2 is profitable, but most likely valve think there are larger profits in other places, (like VR for instance)
Why would they spend time maintaining & updating a game where they only need to add some new community cases every other month and make a profit off those?

Apparently they are even reworking artifact soon which is hilarious

ever since shelter in place started, almost every NA valve pub has 4+ furry bots in it. this feels like a weird fever dream where I am allowed to play TF2 all day every day but I have to play against multiple aimbotters.

looks like the server DOS is facilitated by a (client side?) exploit rather than being a brute force attack.

i couldn't find a reliable source for this as, from what i've seen, all the cheating forums have a ban on posting the details. this is presumably so valve can't find out about it but i did find something saying there was a submission on hackerone that got marked as a dupe from a year ago, meaning valve has known about this for ages and hasn't done anything lol.

It's from (reddit) but this is what someone said.

pikatf2As far as this particular crash goes, it appears to be caused by a client sending a malformed packet that gets processed by CNetChan::UncompressFragments().

Server owners are reporting crashes with the following line spammed: NET_BufferToBufferDecompress with improperly sized dest buffer (%u in, %u needed).

A different server owner posted this Accelerator link (Accelerator is a community-run crash reporting system). The crash itself seems to occur because the checks succeed and the decompression routine (CLZSS::SafeUncompress()) receives bad data. From what I've heard it's an out-of-bounds memory write, but I don't have the detailed view on the crash dump so I can't say for sure.

The community-created hotfix patches CNetChan::UncompressFragments() to always return without processing (acting as a no-op). It's a bandaid that fixes symptoms but will break all legitimate uses of that functionality, so saying it's just 12 lines is misrepresenting it.

Speculative edit (retry): It's looking like an out-of-bound read; of course it's something the SourceMod Discord discussed a couple weeks back when it caused issues on CS:GO (bonus points to hmmmmm on there). CLZSS:SafeUncompress() doesn't check if the source bytes to copy is within the output buffer. That should be a pretty trivial fix on Valve's side.

That post inspired me to look into it more, since it had details on what was actually happening for the crash. It seems like it has to do with the compressed fragment size info sent with large split packets. It's either overflowing or just too large for the server to handle quickly.

basically the server doesn't check if things are too big before decompressing a file so it tries to create the memory and crashes

Yep, most likely. I don't think it's anything specially crafted, though it could be.

The frequency has definitely gone up.. I mean, it's not lagging/crashing servers anymore, but I think we've been kicking a new hacker every 2 minutes in each pub we join. The micspam is an annoying addition

There's a bot in every casual server I try to cue up in called "CAN YOU QUACK LIKE A DUCK". It keeps spamming the same shitty song, like it was funny for a bit but just gets really annoying. Worst of all, it leaves the server before it gets banned so the same cycle just keeps happening and just ruins pubs

what is the point of creators tf, who cares about contracts and cosmetics. These bots were probably made by creators tf to get people to use their servers.

well is it suprising that tyler makes a video about how tf2 is dead, then announces creators tf as the future of tf2, then the bots come in. Even b4nny banned the word creators from his chat because he said creators tf people are sketchy
