As far as I understand the RGL scrim chat bans are to supposed help stop people from being uncomfortable in the TF2 community, particularly new players. Do they really think b4nny was hurt by that chat message? And what's the point of "holding invite players to a higher standard" in a scrim no one is paying attention to?

if rgl bans more players after they pay their fees, that means more players will have to pay up to replace them which funnels more money into sigafoo's RGL LLC as a tax haven, allowing sigafoo to amass a larger tax write-off. This post has been brought to you by Eat The Rich Esports ™

banning people for stupid shit like this is extra problematic because it delegitimizes when people are banned for actual hate speech and harassment (on an rgl server or not). "kys" is pretty innocuous compared to the shit i hear tossed around whenever i play the game. i mean at this point its basically just synonymous with "fuck off." this is uncomfortably close to banning people for any kind of shit talk at all

Ok so none of this actually makes sense. RGL is banning lolguy for saying this in a scrim, and yet:

As we do with shorter ban lengths during the off season, this will have a delayed start and the ban will not begin until May 18th, the day before the start of the sixes season. If we ban a player and a majority of the ban is during the off season, then the ban was essentially fruitless, since it did not affect the player at all. We delay bans that are shorter during off seasons, to make sure that the player does see real consequences to the actions they chose to take.

So is the scrim part of RGL, or isn't it??

If you can be banned for this kind of behavior in a scrim, that implies the scrim has a connection to RGL, and therefore, the ban should start immediately, effectively banning lolguy from playing tf2 on servers with "organized RGL teams", as I guess that's the connection to RGL.

OR

The scrim is not a part of RGL, and this is why the ban is delayed. But if this is the case, then why is he banned?

Either scrims are part of RGL or they aren't, you can't have it both ways. And I'm not even going to get into how dumb it is to be banned for this reason, particularly when I'd be willing to bet every single player in that server has said the exact same thing at some point, or worse, and none of them are banned.

Unban him, and while your at it, unban that poor guy who rang for HL grand finals and got banned because he happened to be the unlucky guy available to ring for a team who had decided to throw. What was he supposed to do? Disconnect when he realized they were going to throw? You probably would have banned him for "poor sportsmanship" or something equally absurd for that, so he was damned if he did, and damned if he didn't. RGL needs to make its process very clear, and get some competency while doing so.

what if there was a league that was almost entirely run by popular vote? All bans run by polls (2/3 majority req). All decisions left up to the community. Maybe invite players have more influence in rulesets/map pool or something. Admins chosen by popular vote. Might be an interesting experiment to see how it would turn out

Let me prephase this that I think that the ban seems absurd, both from a constitency angle and even according to the rules themeselves.

I'm going to however agree with gemm in that I find "kys" to be something that is extremely mean to say to someone, and that to me is way above "normal" banter/trashtalk. After seeing the numerous responses on this thread where people described this word as "shit-talk vernacular " and generally that worse things get said all the time, I understand that this seems to be a cultural thing, as playing in EU it is something I encountered very rarely.

I have no doubts that some people managed to dissociate the word from its meaning. But the raucous defense of it (and other things who are also imo pretty bad) as a part of "trash-talking", which is apparently a normal part of video gaming, irks me. I'm sure that for 99% of people who play comp; the best memories made by playing stem from friendships, bonds made when playing. And that just because this form of trashtalk is socially accepted right now does not mean that it should be, and that we'd all gain more, as a group from trying to be a bit nicer.

lets not confuse rgl's inability to produce a specific and explicit code of conduct with our freedom to be an idiot in chat, yea? The issue with lolguy's ban is that they had no reasonable way of knowing that they could have been banned for this action; nobody has to justify shittalk to show why this ban is still an abuse of power. That discussion can come at a later point.

They reduced his ban to 4 months! Talk about it if you'd like.

knowing how easy it is to get banned for shit talk of all kinds I just wouldn't test the waters regardless of it being a match, scrim or even a pug in relationship with this league. I don't agree with a lot of it, but its still lame ignoring the situation and saying whatever you want anyways and inconveniencing your team when you actually get in trouble for it.
