I don't play frequently anymore, but I just joined a MGE server and on ammomod_mge arena I see 2 soldiers with 2900 points playing with reserve shooter. After every single rocket shot they flick to shotgun. Every single shot! Is this the new playstyle?
Not hating just curious as I haven't played in a while, seems very tryhard for me and don't understand how this can be fun

ammomod is a martial art, there is an unspoken code that if broken will result in ridicule at the very least. respect ammomod. the two soldiers you are attempting to humiliate are warriors fighting to the death.

speaking anecdotally, since i started playing mge there has been a slow trend toward playing for elo instead of following unwritten rules. there has never been a point where i was like, oh yeah suddenly everyone is cheesing n shit, just happened over time.

i read somewhere a few days ago that like 3/4 of people above 2500 elo on public mge are closet cheating in eu.
so if they are willing to cheat in mge (saddest thing ever) i dont think they will care about playing to improve. its literally just win however you can to get your ego number up.

makes sense given that if you go on their steam profile 99% chance they dont have etf2l or any logs so just alting & cheating in mge lol

You have the wrong mindset. The majority of players you'll encounter in public mge are barely sentient and play like a reinforcement learning AI thats in the process of being trained to maximize elo gain, so you really have to go into it with one of two mindsets:

Mindset one is the bot map. You have to practice hitting airshots on the bots. Sometimes they're programmed badly and do weird stuff, but that's OK, you don't have to worry about what they're doing or whether you hit 20 first because you're practicing hitting airshots.

Mindset two is "going to the zoo". This is where you're joining the MGE server to observe the behaviour of all the different animals. I think this one's fairly self evident but it's the opposite of the bot map mindset where all you're interested in is the fascinating behaviours the other player is exhibiting.

Hope this helps and good luck in your future mge endeavours.

This is something I wish I understood better: certain behaviors that some players show. For example, constant trash talk, playing in a cheap way, and then calling you a dog or trash even after they lose or barely win.

I notice this a lot now. When I was younger and really trying to improve at MGE, grinding hard and playing with an ultra-competitive mindset, I always wanted to win no matter what. But even then, I was never that angry, and I never tried to ragebait people. I don’t understand why this kind of behavior has become so common, because it’s making MGE almost unplayable. Every time I just want to join, have fun, and shoot a few rockets, people are constantly trash talking, kicking, re-adding, and repeating the cycle and for no reason i genuinely never trash talk and im never a dick to anyone on mge never really even have been.

One that stuck with me very recently before i stopped tf2 all together was a 2400 player I fought on ammomod. I won once or twice, then he won a few rounds as well, but throughout the entire session he was angry, constantly switching to shotgun, and nonstop trash talking. What I don’t understand is what I did to make him so angry, especially considering that he won most of our games.

someone needs to lay down the law. establish by example (youtube video?) what it means to not by a tryhard, to play honorably. its always been ambiguous, what counts as cheesing and what counts as honor.

MGE players develop some form of mental disease the moment they reach 2500 ELO. There's no exception, everyone that I've seen with that much ELO on any MGE server has no respect for rules, written or unwritten, they will ridicule you if you lose, they will silent remove and throw a tantrum if you're beating them, most of them have been banned from every league, shunned, and cast down to the fiery pits of Hell and relegated to an eternity of MGE and TF2Center (what they deserve).

ELO is what they crave, it is their essence, any threat to it triggers an animalistic response, it is dopamine to them and they are addicted to it.

I've seen multiple occasions where a pair of them were throwing the most vile insults at each other, bringing their mothers into the mix, and accusing each other of being smelly virgins because one was slightly better at being a bigger prick than the other, oblivious to the fact they've both been in the same server for the past 8 consecutive hours, with no shower or job in sight... I've even seen some with +3000 ELO still performing w strafes and pencil jumps.

God is no longer present.

while ammomod is on the mind i just want to say if you're playing it with a teammate/soldier partner or something and your main focus is just hitting solid flat ground rockets and decent juggles on your opponents with a couple low surfs mixed in - it is one of the best straight soldier DM practice you can get. i remember only playing maybe 30 mins a day with teammates in late 2020 early 2021 and it gave me such a boost.

dont let public mge sweats make you think ammomod sucks. the arena is simple but the practice is great. trust.

It’s really unfortunate to see the state that mge is in right now. Especially because I feel like it’s a really good and fun gamemode. It’s one of the best ways to practice aim, movement, and overall dm fundamentals. A cool 1v1 format in such a high skill cap game, I feel like that’s why I’ve spent such a huge portion of my time in tf2 playing it.

It does hurt a lot watching the community worsening as time goes by. While the elo system is the biggest part of the problem, the competitive drive that used to push people to improve has twisted into ego and toxicity. Public mge has filtered into a space mostly filled with grinders and hyper-competitive players, while more casual, positive or less experienced players leave because the environment feels hostile. With little moderation, that behavior becomes “normal”, and new players either quit or copy it.

That on top of a ranking system, it’s made winning feel like validation and losing like it’s the end of the world. And when wins plateau, some people stop chasing actual improvement and start defending their ego instead. It leads to so many games being filled with trash talk and negativity instead of mutual respect. It’s only getting worse as time goes by, especially when there are people making it so much more personal, and tearing each other down over a single win or loss that ultimately doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things. That kind of behavior spreads fast, and it feels like it’s infected almost everyone who plays.

I’ll admit I haven’t been innocent in this either. I've fallen into the same cycle, trying to fight fire with fire, responding to toxicity with more of it. But in the end, nobody wins. It just keeps the cycle going.

I really do hope there is some sort of reset community wise. I still think to this day that the gamemode itself is really fun. There are still some very talented players as well as a small chunk that still play with integrity. But for the most part, the public mge community has taken a turn for the worst.
