Haven't seen a thread on this yet.

Ever since Source 2 was first mentioned publicly as an engine that Valve was working on, a lot of people in the Team Fortress 2 community have started asking the question: “If Valve ever ports TF2 to Source 2, what would it look like? How different gameplay would be? And would TF2 even feel the same?”. Unfortunately, none of these questions have been answered properly up until this time.

However, something really significant has happened recently that can change that - s&box, the spiritual successor of Garry’s Mod made on the Source 2 engine, has been released as part of a dev preview to a group of community members, including ourselves. It, pretty much, like Garry’s Mod itself, allows you to build whatever you want using the toolset that it provides. So we’ve decided to not lose that chance.

We are all big TF2 fans here, most of us have sunk hundreds or even thousands hours into this game. So, we have decided that we are going to try to answer that exact question - we want to rebuild Team Fortress 2 mechanics, port all the assets from the base game to the new engine and see how different it can look and feel from the original game. This is what TF:S2 is about. Our goal is to remake, improve, iterate, and create a new Team Fortress experience on Source 2 engine using s&box.

This project is a huge undertaking, we would have to consider all nitpicks of TF2 gameplay, try to rebuild every single mechanic to feel similar to the base game, but with enough dedication, I believe that we can do it! I think it has a lot of potential since probably working with already existing tools that were built with the purpose of porting stuff from S1 to S2 will make everything flow so much better and things could start getting done in a much more interesting pace than in other projects that either involve building TF2 from the ground up or fixing the current spaghetti. On the other hand it's one more project to the others in the table, I don't want to get my hopes up that quick. Overall it's very exciting, but I'll hold my enthusiasm for now until we see something that presents a real tangible chance of trying it out with the same normality we play TF2.

I think it has a lot of potential since probably working with already existing tools that were built with the purpose of porting stuff from S1 to S2 will make everything flow so much better and things could start getting done in a much more interesting pace than in other projects that either involve building TF2 from the ground up or fixing the current spaghetti. If only the people working this and all the other similar projects could just be hired by valve and make an official project come together. Very cool stuff but reading through the blog post it seems there are a lot of limitations and it has a long way to go

My hope is valve will try to do this behind closed doors and we will be pleasantly surprised some time in the future but definitely not holding my breath lol. I can see people wanting to stick to original even if valve makes a source 2 version just because of hats but from their perspective they can do keys and hats and such in a new game and make money off them both

This is legit cooler than a LAN, like has potential to really revive the game if done well which I'm sure it will be because mastercoms probably knows this game better than some of the valve team at this point since all they do is hats lol.

I can't stop thinking about how beautiful broadcasts would be in this engine, especially with the thought of potential support for things like basic spectating tools and balance changes in the future. Looking forward to seeing where this goes!

If there is a playable version in the future that will fully utilise my hardware and give me high frames, whilst also making the game more enjoyable to play, then I would be hyped af for it
Otherwise, to me, it's a huge source 1 port project for the eye-candy tf2 enjoyers out there

Will source 2 even affect the GPU and CPU usage at all? From what little i know about source 2 I wouldn't think it is like this, but this information was a bit older so I really don't know.

Source 2 is a drastically more modern engine designed with modern hardware and techniques in mind. In 2007, game engines were designed for machines with one or a couple threads and modest gpus. Even your basic gaming computer in 2021 has 4+ threads and the gpu is an order of magnitude (or several) more powerful than 2007 hardware*, but a large portion of that goes to waste since current tf2 isn't designed to use it. A source 2 tf2 port is likely to blow the current tf2's performance out of the water for the same graphical fidelity, or largely improve the graphical fidelity while also improving perf.

Of course, a lot depends on what level of access this team has to the tools (i.e. a mod will never be as fast as having native access), but the potential's there. I'd personally love to see stv support so that games played in TF2 could be casted/produced in TF:S2.

* I looked into this for fun - some gpu benchmarks
639 - GeForce 8800 Ultra (arguably the best card on the market in 2007)
1503 (2.35x) - the Vega integrated graphics in the first $500 gaming laptop I could find
19509 (30x) - the RTX 2080 Super I have
benchmarks are definitely not everything, of course - there have been substantial architectural improvements to GPUs as well

DubThinkSource 2 is a drastically more modern engine designed with modern hardware and techniques in mind. In 2007, game engines were designed for machines with one or a couple threads and modest gpus.

Ok because from what I thought was true was that source 2 wasn't a full engine but more like an extension. But this information was quite a bit older and not 100% certain. It's good to hear that is is an entirely new engine and not just an extension like engine.

half life alyx runs super well and has incredible graphics, i have no doubts that some form of tf2 in the same engine will look great and run well even on modest systems

I love how Valve is more worried about this shit, but is perfectly fine with doing nothing with this game unless the community itself makes 99 percent of the new content for them and then takes a profit from it with practically no real work.
