They definitely had invite polls in ESEA and they'd always figure shit out before the season start and not super last minute like this, but they didn't do any tournaments (polls are just a popularity contest so better to do it this way for sure)

Yeah, the tournaments aren't the problem. The problem was the short notice.

when ire reached out to me on discord to get my confirmed roster, I asked when we would know if we had to play the qualifiers. all he said was 'after the 6th', which I assume meant right after. I still don't know...

so yeah, I don't know why rgl hasn't even slightly promoted this, but there's gonna be a 6 team round robin to decide the final 4 invite spots.

I don't know why they couldn't think of a better solution than us having to play 5 bo2s in the next 4 days, even if there were a qualifier happening, but that's the situation we find ourselves in.

Hey all,

We haven't been done much to communicate our reasoning around the map pool and map cup choices, so I wanted to share some of that here:

One of our current goals at RGL is to continue to improve the map pool, and supporting new maps is critical to that. This is a worthwhile goal which has already had success:

  • koth_clearcut, which was introduced in S1 instead of granary/badlands, is now well liked and rated within a few percentage points of the staple map koth_product. koth_bagel is rated similarly (although the sample size is smaller).
  • cp_villa was less disliked this season than granary was when it was played in S2, and has the chance to continue to improve, unlike cp_granary.

We haven't included older maps in recent surveys because the spot in the map pool isn't open to them - we'd much rather have a map with mixed opinions that's in development and will improve than one that has similarly mixed opinions and will never improve (i.e. granary/badlands). Maps like reckoner and logjam have been discussed for inclusion in map cups, but are generally pretty static in their current states and have had lukewarm receptions in other regions, so we focused more on maps that have seen less exposure and are newer for this cup.

With all that being said, there are definitely parts of our approach that can be approved. We hear you that the time between this map cup and the start of the season is too short (we would have liked to hold the cup earlier, but didn't want to conflict with Dreamhack). Because of the short time between the cup and the season, we will only include the cup-winning map in S6 if it is received very well and feels definitively season-ready. Otherwise, it will be on-deck to be played in S7 as several of you have suggested, and cp_villa will remain for S6. For future seasons, we will aim to have the map pool determined a season in advance to provide teams ample time to learn maps and avoid the scheduling issue we had this season.

While we're on the topic of the map pool, one of the ideas that's been floated is to include all three koth maps this season rather than including villa, and bring in the map cup map next season. While bagel and clearcut are both liked better than villa, a significant portion of the community is against 3 koth at the moment:

https://push.dubthink.com/2021/05/chrome_2021-05-09_16-55-22.png

Generally we'd like to see a larger percentage of people in support of 3 koth before testing it, so we aren't considering that option for this season.

At some point in the coming weeks, I'm hoping to get out an article with details from the post season survey which will include more detailed statistics on map opinions this season.

tl;dr

  • Improving the map pool is part of our mission at RGL, and promising new maps are critical to that
  • Old maps aren't included on the survey because we only have one open spot in the pool, which is currently for new and actively developed maps
  • The cup is this late to not conflict with dreamhack
  • Our methods of introducing new maps can definitely be improved, and we're listening to your feedback:
  • Because of the short time between the cup and the season, we will only include the winning map in S6 if it is received very well and season ready. Otherwise, it will be played in S7 and villa will remain for S6

This post doesn't exhaustively cover every detail of why we've made all of the above decisions, so please reach out to me at DubThink#3877 if you have any further questions or constructive feedback - I'm happy to chat!

  • Old maps aren't included on the survey because we only have one open spot in the pool, which is currently for new and actively developed maps

So make a spot/open an extra one for at least one of the old maps then? What kind of a dogshit reason is that, you are just admitting that by design, old maps won't even have a chance to be voted on when it's clearly what everyone wants because you feel it somehow "staggers" the progression of competitive TF2.

NEWS FLASH: This game has been extremely dead for the past 7 years, you introducing cp_unibrow_f7 won't revive it.

I am 250% convinced you are just trolling at this point.

So the outcomes now are a map that will be disliked and not played vs a map that is already disliked and not played???

For the first chunk, if you dont want it to take the place of a new map, could they perhaps be put in a rotation (similar to how you're doing koth maps) with the least liked staple maps? Having something like metalworks come out for a season in order to shift badlands or granary back in for a season would help the map rotation still feel "fresh" from season to season while still being staple maps.

For the second chunk, I understand wanting to look to other leagues for maps like reckoner and logjams reception, but every region is different and map tastes vary region to region (Sticking with metal, I know a lot of NA players who like metal, but for a looooong time it was despised in Australia). I understand focusing on the other maps, but I kind of wish RGL NA players got the chance to play either of these maps to actually form those opinions.

also wait why the fuck are you keeping villa for s6 if the new one isnt received well

JUST HAVE A FUCKING VOTE AND SEE WHAT PEOPLE WANT!!!!!!!!

it isnt that hard dude even with your stupid restriction of no old maps, just let people decide: clearcut, villa, newmap

yall need to hire a statistician or something cause whoever is looking at these numbers and thinking 'yea, 40% voted no 3rd koth map, 37% voted yes 3rd koth, 20% voted no opinion, that means WITHOUT A DOUBT that people would rather have villa than clearcut' needs to be immediately fired lmfao

DubThinkImproving the map pool is part of our mission at RGLDubThinkWe

Therein lies the problem with everything, the fundamental root problem with every terrible decision RGL has ever made.

That 'we' is a non-inclusive we. It's not 'we the competitive tf2 community', it's 'we the 5 people in RGL who have any real input'.

RGL is the fakest community league that has ever existed in tf2. The surveys are a smokescreen, because it's actually even more undemocratic than ESEA.

RGL is instead, at best (as in, this is how they see themselves), a benevolent dictatorship. Who cares if people want to play older maps? We will force in new ones, because it's for their own good. Who cares if people want to play with their friends in advanced and not grind the season like crazy? We will aggressively class restrict them, because it's for their own good. Who cares if black people want to be able to say the n word? We will ban them for it, because it's for their own good.

As long as that approach exists, no one will ever be satisfied with a single one of your decisions. That's the deal y'all have made.

All Reckoner needs is some changes to the last point. Logjam has been seeing critique for several seasons in several regions. Why introduce a map that needs even more work just to fuck the map maker over in a season or two?

I'm not gonna have a dig at RGL or anything but I don't get this? Logjam is pretty lukewarm (altho the winner of ozf main last season was #JusticeForLogjam) but Reckoner consistently gets good marks from most of the ozf playerpool, was picked for every div's Grand Finals and played in 3/4 of the Grand FInals . That Reckoner isn't getting a serious consideration despite it having consistent playtesting and playtime throughout the other regions is silly. Having played many games on it I can speak to it's quality as a map, especially rc6.

trippathere should only be 9 invite teams dont force it to be 10 again

In a round robin division, schedule-wise this is the exactly the same as 10 teams but replacing a team with a bye week, so we decided to stick with 10. Invite gets the extra week between regular season and playoffs to avoid the floating matches from last season.

Dreamboat... could they perhaps be put in a rotation (similar to how you're doing koth maps) with the least liked staple maps?

We'd definitely like to get to the point where we have a rotation of 5cp maps, but at the moment, we'd like that to be between maps that are similarly well liked by the community, which doesn't include badlands and granary (as based on post-season survey data: granary had a 37% enjoyment, which is drastically less than the 60% metalworks (the 2nd lowest map) had last season). By focusing on newer maps that show promise now, we're hoping to get to that point much like we did with koth.

DreamboatFor the second chunk, I understand wanting to look to other leagues for maps like reckoner and logjams reception, but every region is different and map tastes vary region to region

This is a valid point, and both maps are on our radar for future map cups.

Is there a good reason even if people don't want more koth as a permanent change that there was no visible attempt to clarify if it would be better/preferred to add bagel and temporarily replace villa with clearcut until more 5cp maps mature?

The generic questions in the surveys obviously imply longer-term consequences than just the next season, considering NA tf2 has always liked sticking to things that work, so a much more clearly conditional/temporary question rather than "we will have 3 koth maps forever!!!" may be more useful, especially with maps that are still maintained like Domain, Mannbase, and the soon to be a thing b4nny map still present and having immense potential. One season is a long time, and maybe we could have a map cup with several actually good candidates instead of unplayable garbage, a clearly not ready but mediocre map or two, and a map that is very much good enough and about to be better. If you can toss dead-ended garbage like Mist and Synthetic and Kalinka and Redrock at map cups maybe we could play maps actually worthy of play instead and it'd be easier to find replacements to Villa.
