RGL unveils Traditional Sixes League details
posted in News
Recurse
June 13, 2019

With the end of the final season of ESEA lurking closer, the Recharge Gaming League (RGL) has announced their appeal to the traditional sixes competitive community, hoping to capitalize on the vacuum left by ESEA, who will be dropping their Team Fortress 2 league following the end of ESEA Season 31. Unlike RGL's previous endeavors, this new league aligns far closer with the mainstream competitive ruleset, albeit with some alterations.

Divisions

Unlike ESEA's three-division structure, RGL's new league will instead feature six smaller divisions comprising of only around 10 teams each. The prospective divisions and their prospective skill levels in relation to ESEA are as follows:

  • Invite: ESEA Invite

  • Advanced: From low ESEA Invite to high ESEA Intermediate

  • Main: Mid-range ESEA Intermediate

  • IM: From mid ESEA Open to low ESEA Intermediate

  • Open: Low ESEA Open

  • Fresh Meat: New players only

Whitelist

The RGL whitelist will once again diverge from the Global Whitelist standard, and instead mimic the ESEA Whitelist, with the exception of allowing the use of the Solemn Vow. This brings the amount of banned weapons down to just seventeen, with the organization open to unbanning further weapons in the future. The remaining banned weapons are the following:

  • Soda Popper

  • Bonk! Atomic Punch

  • Crit-a-cola

  • Mad Milk

  • Flying Guillotine

  • B.A.S.E Jumper

  • Reserve Shooter

  • Disciplinary Action

  • Natascha

  • Buffalo Steak Sandvich

  • Fists of Steel

  • Rescue Ranger

  • Short Circuit

  • Wrangler

  • Quick-Fix

  • Vaccinator

  • Machina

  • Sydney Sleeper

  • Jarate

Ruleset

The RGL ruleset will be nearly identical to the current ESEA ruleset, maintaining the two-half structure, 5 win-limit on 5CP, and 4 win-limit on KOTH. The only difference concerns half-time on KOTH, which occurs at 2 wins as opposed to 3 in ESEA. Full rules are as follows:

  • 5CP: First to 5 wins the match, with half-time occurring at 3 wins or 30 minute time limit. Remaining half is also 30 mins.

  • KOTH: First to 4 wins the match, with half-time occurs at 2 rounds won.

For the playoffs stage, each division will run a double-elimination bracket, with all matches excluding the grand finals running a best-of-three set. For the grand finals, the two teams will play in a best-of-five set, with the upper-bracket team starting the series with a 1-0 default advantage.

Maps

A version of the map banning process that has existed in ESEA since Season 28 will be partially continued into the RGL league. Teams playing in Invite or Advanced will have the privilege of pick/banning their maps, while lower divisions will have to be content with a set weekly map pool.

koth_product, cp_snakewater, cp_gullywash, cp_process, cp_sunshine, cp_metalworks, and cp_propaganda will continue to be played, while cp_badlands and cp_granary with be replaced by koth_clearcut.

Open teams will play one map per week, while remaining teams will face two opponents each week.

Points

The largest change in this new league will be in how standings are calculated. While ESEA based standings primarily on a team's win/loss record, RGL will also account for the point differential in matches.

A total of 3 points are available to be won per match, with the losing team gaining points according to how close they make the match. The winning team then receives the remaining points.

Fees and Prizes

RGL is expecting a $6,000 - $8,000 prize pool for its first season, which will be based on the signups it receives for its first season.

Fees per division are as follows:

  • Invite: $40

  • Advanced: $30

  • Main: $20

  • IM: $15

  • Open: $0

RGL are also offering a 20% Early Bird discount for fees, with the promotion running until June 18, 11:00 PM EST.

The first RGL Traditional Sixes League will begin on July 23rd — two days after the end of ESEA Season 31 playoffs — and wrap up on September 22nd. More information can be found in RGL's official blog post and interested players can sign up on RGL's website.

Here is the quote that was requested by TF.TV but not used in the article about what RGL can and plans to bring for the sixes league, namely growth, community-based admining and ultimately success.

RGLIn less than two years we went from the smallest league to the largest league in NA and that wasn't by accident. RGL is about one thing, community-based admining. We listen to our community and adjust based on feedback. We're not afraid to try new ideas for a season or a cup, but if it doesn't work? We don't continue it, we change, pivot and we grow.

Our Prolander league grew by about 35% from Season 5 to Season 6. Our Highlander format has grown every season, and our current season is up almost 30% compared to last season. Our No Restriction Sixes league was the largest single Sixes league in NA last spring, with 17 teams made up new to comp players.

These things don't happen by chance. People continue to come back to our leagues because of the quality, thoughtfulness and care that we put into them. We are very excited to bring sixes into our line-up as we believe our already large playerbase can give sixes a new rush of players to join in. And we are looking forward to making this format as successful as our other formats have been and continue to bring growth to competitive TF2.

We also will be releasing a statement tomorrow night with some revisions and changes we're making for the first season after reading through feedback.

sigafooWe also will be releasing a statement tomorrow night with some revisions and changes we're making for the first season after reading through feedback.

Just an update on this, we are currently mid-way through the article where we will be addressing concerns and changes we'll be making. We also have the survey done that we'll be releasing at the same time to get feedback from the sixes player base to help inform us on what direction people want to go with things like the whitelist, maps, and other stuff.

It'll probably be around 10 pm Eastern after I have a meeting with another Invite leader, just in case that meeting brings anything to light that we should change.

Alright, it's been a long day of writing and working with our awesome admin team. We've made several changes to the upcoming season.

You can read about all of them and take the survey @ http://sixes.rgl.gg/Public/Articles/Default.aspx?a=1250

Notable things that are changing

Match times:
Default times are moved to 10:30 for IM/Main/Advance/Invite,
Open moved to 9:30.

We will use the survey to confirm moving these times are correct.

Whitelist

The survey will collect opinions on which whitelist to use and weapon bans, which will determine the whitelist used for S1. Either a possible modified ESEA or the global whitelist.

Maps

Removed Kalinka, Whether or not we use clearcut or another map in its place will be decided by the survey.

Midseason Anti-Poaching (Invite only rule)

This rule is being suspended indefinitely for 6s.

----

There is more in the article where we help to clear up some of the concerns and explain ourselves better on topics from the initial article. We also talk about our some new production talent and our admin team.

I don't care what anybody says.
Putting an open player as the Head Admin ain't a good look chief.
This is also horrible.
* I understand that for future seasons, RGL will only bring in maps after we’ve held public experimental cups to give players a chance to play through them, like we do with Highlander
-------->The only option being "Yes, I understand"

ScreamI don't care what anybody says.

but why tho?
I fail to see why the division that someone plays in would directly impact their ability to admin a league, skill level seems very unrelated here. this sentiment that only high level players should be in charge and making decisions for the community seems incredibly dismissive of the opinions of lower level players, or frankly anyone outside of invite.

As an admin of this league I would like to say that generally speaking, I stand with the existing ESEA 6s community on most issues surrounding NA 6s as it stands right now. I would also like to say that as the season goes on you SHOULD NOT be afraid to contact me directly regarding issues you have with the league. I want to help make RGL 6s the best it possibly can and I personally would like to start by making the EXISTING 6s player base happy before expanding to newer players.

i also agree with dippidy, a player's skill level should not be brought up when discussing their abilities as an admin. I can say confidently that yari is a very mature person and I believe he will do great as a head admin.

* I understand that for future seasons, RGL will only bring in maps after we’ve held public experimental cups to give players a chance to play through them, like we do with Highlander
-------->The only option being "Yes, I understand"

reason this was worded this way is because we know many people have not read the entire breakdown of the 6s league and will not read the full changes announcement because they are both very long articles and putting this into the survey was meant as a way to make sure players know how future map changes will be made because the way we are picking the last map for rotation right now is different than how it is usually done because there is no time for an experimental map cup

This is a good update. At this point the only thing I'm not so sure about is the away ban | home pick system for invite but apart from that things look solid

Perhaps I should be more clear, to elaborate, I think it might have been better to put someone at head admin with a better line of experience in a larger range of skill levels as they are going to be over the entire administration team, and should be able to discern issues quickly and efficiently with an understanding of each skill level’s tendencies. While I hope for RGL that Yari will be a great admin, it seems someone more near the caliber of Jetz or Grape shoulda taken that position. Also, idk who the other 2-3 admins are but apprently they have very little 6’s experience. A very one-sided staff tbh.

There’s like 5+ threads listing what the community mostly wants, also, I just wanna play in a good league, not admin it, if Sigafoo wanted a more experienced take, he could have easily sought out for it himself, not really sure if he would listen to me much anyway based on all of the bts admin stuff I’ve been hearing.
