good video and great examples and detail. The unfortunate reality however is a lot of people don't even bother learning t3+ rocket jumping unless they're a roamer, with some pockets still swearing it doesn't matter, and people that don't play soldier especially don't care. I mention this because if people will be this stubborn on something people have really known for a decade will directly improve the player, I don't imagine something as revolutionary as demo jumping makes ur demo gameplay better and more versatile to stick anytime soon.

Regardless nothing I mentioned is Rumpus' fault in the slightest. I think this is an excellent and well-thought-out video that voices a lot of the opinions comp-jumper players have felt for ages. I hope people will be more open to discussing this topic as it is very neglected for demo.

I think demos should at least be able to do like 2 airpogos, having that knowledge of your stickies arc and arm time, how long you charge them, they directly translate into your dm

i can pogo and air pogo perfectly fine yet i struggle on some tier 3 maps, you learn demo jumping as you play the game, i pretty much never do jump maps on demo. the only jumps you should practice are rollouts, and the occasional pogo in game will come in handy, other than that i dont think demo jumping matters in 6s

demo jump in first person, think the reason a lot of comp players disregard demo jumping is because u see the people who are 'good' at it do it and they are playing gta 5 pogoing around with a glowing number on hud in thirdperson.

but ye demo jump map is just another way to practise stickies, really gets u to intuitively know how far ur stickies r gna go and arc n stuff, i like it :-)

I firmly believe that everyone who plays an explosive class should be proficient at jumping on that class. There's no reason not to improve at something that could potentially make you better at the game. Good video rumpus.

Good video. I think it might also be worth talking about speedrunning jump maps rather than just completion. You mention that higher tier maps offer benefits by enforcing consistency in your mechanics, but I would argue that speedrunning the easier maps does this better while dodging some of the mechanics with less direct application. This might appeal more to those who enjoy the competitive aspect of jumping but don't find more complex/niche jumps that exist on higher tier maps to be fun.

Also might be worth to come up with a short list (~5-10) worthwhile maps to play, i know you linked the spreadsheets but those have a LOT of maps on them.

I loved how you touched on how playing higher tiers builds consistency for the lower tier mechanics. your example in this case was a crouch det for demoman and in jump if your crouch det is bad it will hinder your ability to finish a higher tier jump but in 6s if its derpy it could end up ruining your whole uber.

I also appreciated that you brought up the "freestyling" aspect that having jump mechanics down allows you to make something up on the fly (sorta seeing the 6s map as a jump map itself). while i think its more applicable to soldier in finding a random way to ramp slide in and collect a medic pick or something like that, demoman i think equally has the ability to squeeze his way through a doorway at just the right angle with a sticky jump as to be unexpected and similarly collect a medic pick or what have you.

good video

The most important jump for demo is the 45 health sticky jump, I'd rather be able to do that every time than hit random air stickies.

Not a bad video at all though

det-The most important jump for demo is the 45 health sticky jump

totally agree that that's really important and i wish i couldve mentioned that (outside of the crouch det damage point) without losing focus on the scope of what i was trying to say
I wouldve also liked to have included something about how going deeper is not a strictly good thing and to be mindful about positioning yourself for reflashes in uber situations etc. but ultimately i just wanted to kinda pinpoint this is why jumping is good in a very direct, in-game jumps kind of way that misses some nuances

Speedrunning easy old maps will always be by far the most useful for 6s/general movement. Moving around cp_gullywash quickly has basically nothing in common with really any of the maps in this video, but maps like excavation, competitive (even though most of the maps aren't in rotation anymore), seven, ayers, and bob are great practice. Newer jumper mains tend to hate those maps, but that's really just because good movement is hard and they'd rather play something easy to go fast on.

Harder stuff can be good for getting consistent, but stickies do a lot of damage and there aren't many 2 sticky jumps in T4+ maps. Better to do harder routes in easy content.
