hej venner

I was toying with the idea of creating a sort of "how to guide" of stuff that I wish I knew when I first got into casting and had to learn the hard way for a good long while. Tutorials on how to cast along with more generalized tips are out there, but theyre generally quite difficult to find and/or made by people who have since been rightfully outed from their communities. This power point presentation was the result.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01K6o5prPi4

Timestamps are in the description, cant figure out how to make them appear on the actual video ui and I'm too lazy to try to get them to work a third time.
At points in the presentation I used clips from formula 1 which youtube decided to nuke the video for. There is a link to the twitch vod with those clips here along with in the video description.
The powerpoint itself can be found here, fair warning however, its 3 gb.
There is still a tonne of stuff I did not cover in this powerpoint, feel free to ask on the thread or to dm me on discord @ wan5251

cheers,

I personally disagree with color interrupting play-by-play with making orgasmic noises. I think it's distracting to what's going on, even if it's really exciting. In professional sports, very rarely do I see sportscasters have their color commentator interrupt play-by-play with random exclamatory noises, no matter how exciting the situation is. One thing that Valorant casters / commentators have been doing recently is gasping during tense moments, and I find it adds unnecessary noise to already great moments.

Maybe I'm being a little pedantic, but I find myself enjoying moments better without the unnecessary color interruption. Maybe I'm just really annoyed with Valorant commentary and I can't unhear the random gasping, lol.

At the very least, you shouldn't talk over the person that's already talking with your own commentary.

I feel like this problem is endemic in the NBA, I can't speak as to any other USA sports leagues but I feel like for a lot of commentary duos in basketball it's par for the course to just shout over one another whenever anything mildly interesting happens. I think some esports, especially CSGO, do a much better job at that in top level games. However, there are also many instances of this not being the case, such as the Knicks broadcasting team. And I fully agree it's annoying af

I mean he's not wrong in the slightest though. There's a reason people wanna watch kaidus who has shit quality graphics and the old eXtv flying camera for prem games. The properly casted and produed streams look great but when casters have never played top mid, let alone prem or top d1, their input about the game is just not going to be nearly as in-depth or meaningful as one of the top players of all time (or a good portion of d1/prem players).

At the very least, you shouldn't talk over the person that's already talking with your own commentary.

The thing you must realise though is that the majority of the esports audience are different, they're younger compared to the traditional sports audience and therefore the way the commentary is delivered is, less polished and more casual. It's an attempt to make commentary more exciting to the viewer, and it shows in viewership that caster duos that are more in sync together - bouncing words off each other are more likely to have a higher viewer count than those duos who don't mesh well. You are however correct that colours shouldn't interrupt play-by-plays, they're the support.

It goes back to the beginning of esports coverage, all the way back to grassroots LAN's where friends jump on together to shoutcast, and they're screaming at their friend's fat frags in excitement for them. It's not a bad thing, I guess just some people aren't well adjusted to it.

i think the best time i had casting was at lan with adysky. he offered a lot of insight into teams and players since he knows them well and played with and against them at the highest levels.

i think we need more prem players to jump on colour casting or whatever you want to call it since it would help flesh out a match a lot more and pick teams and players apart.

kaidus recent streams whilst he does have insightful input misses like 90% of what's going on in the match but I'd still never even consider watching tftv over them.

its not like we dont let prem players on the mic if they want to but 9 times out of 10 when someone at the top level has interest to do it, they are also in the position where they are on a team and busy most days with notable exception of Eemes. Josh and Samski only hopped on when they had no teams to play on and YeeHaw still has interest but is back in the scrim-cycle again so its hard to find time. Its not hard to get in touch with me for anyone else but when i got a dozen other peoples free evenings to plan around i'd rather not wait until wednesday night to tell people if they can make plans for thursday evening.

And as far as kaidus is concerned, obviously i'd be willing to let him on as much as almost anyone else in prem but as far as i have been told, he'd rather do his own thing (and with the obvious financial benefit of it can you blame him)

And really thats just the big issue, this isnt a big money esport we are talking about so you gotta find people that really care and thats not easy when there is nothing to gain unless you just really care for the process of making content for the people.

TheFragileAt the very least, you shouldn't talk over the person that's already talking with your own commentary.

you absolutely HAVE to interrupt your other caster if you notice something more important happening, doesnt matter if you're analyst or pbp. its gonna be offputting for viewers and you both look stupid if you're talking about the fight on second while the round is just ending to a backcap on last (especially if ur cameraman noticed and ur casters didnt). as for the other caster pog-noising when something happens, i think its fine on a case-by-case basis, sometimes it works sometimes its weird
