I wish I had something incisive to say but I don't because it's all so routine at this point.

all the good joke lines about "oh another shooting, lame" have been used already.

it's depressing. we've reached the point where we're used to being used to shootings.

There's actually a dozen of them with the same title.
They didn't make a new one for this shooting so it can't be that bad, right?

It's like some absurdist comedy. The best part will be the inevitable "the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun". Actually no, the tweet is deleted now but:

Cops took my gun, 9mm silver and black glock. When I heard gunshots I quickly pulled my shit out and started running. Showed them my license to carry and showed them my clip was still full. I’m fine but I’m stuck and can’t go anywhere.

Fuck this shit.

I have a friend from college who lives in El Paso. She and her family shop at that very Walmart sometimes. She was literally across the street when this happened. She's fine, thank god. But it seems that she would have been a priority target if she were in the store, which makes me really angry.

You see, there's something else I want to add to this thread. As the news reports come in, it's becoming increasingly clear that this was an act of hate against Hispanic people.

An anonymous, 2,300 word manifesto went up online just before the shooting ranting about the "Hispanic invasion of Texas" and alluding to alt-right theories about "white replacement". The shooter also referenced the Christchurch massacre, in which another white supremacist, also guided by this "white replacment" shit massacred Muslim people during their prayer service. Source: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-49226573

My point is: this wasn't a random act of violence. This wasn't someone who decided to shoot up their school for reasons unknown. The shooter drove 9 hours from his hometown of Dallas to get to El Paso. They were deliberately targeting immigrants.

One last thing I want to make clear to people: there's a link between the rhetoric Trump uses about immigration and this shooting. Because guess who else loves to refer to Hispanic immigration as an "invasion?" That's right, the Donald himself. If you can't comprehend why people get angry about the words Trump uses, this is a perfect example.

Obama said it best. Progress is a steady pace. It may seem like we've regressed, but we'll come back. don't let despair take you. humanity has been plagued by those who hate progress, those who hate us loving each other. But the world has historically become less violent, we have proven we want to be a united force. No matter how hopeless you may become, know that everyone around you loves you. We'll overcome this hurdle, Trump may seem like he's dividing us, but talk to your neighbors. He's fueling his base, he isn't sparking a revolution. Humans love, we don't want to hate. he's nothing but a temporary set back; focus on the future, we'll make it through this together.

Imagine defending the mass murder of 20 innocent people because they look Hispanic. What the fuck is wrong with you?

I'm not saying that Trump directly caused this mass shooting. We can agree that that is ridiculous. What I'm saying is that Trump (and yourself) contribute to the broader cesspool of anti-immigrant hate that led the shooter to believe that his actions were justified.

While I'm here, I don't think many people actually read the mustard article so let me just pull a couple of salient quotes from that.

WP articleWe found that counties that had hosted a 2016 Trump campaign rally saw a 226 percent increase in reported hate crimes over comparable counties that did not host such a rally.WP articleAdditionally, it is hard to discount a “Trump effect” when a considerable number of these reported hate crimes reference Trump. According to the ADL’s 2016 data, these incidents included vandalism, intimidation and assault.WP articleWhat’s more, according to the FBI’s Universal Crime report in 2017, reported hate crimes increased 17 percent over 2016. Recent research also shows that reading or hearing Trump’s statements of bias against particular groups makes people more likely to write offensive things about the groups he targets.

Okay, let's consider the context here.

You wrote "imagine supporting illegal immigration" in a thread about a mass murder of Hispanic people.

This shows that you believe (without any evidence) that:
1) The victims were illegal immigrants
2) The victims deserved to die because they were "illegal immigrants"

This is the same thing the shooter believed, as demonstrated by his manifesto and his target choice.

Writing something that supports the shooter's stated reasons for killing is defending the shooter.

I tried to make a complex roundabout statement of how i dislike white supremacy and anime equally, and how we'd probably be substantially better off without both. End those.

Rest of its up for scrutiny, so have at it.

I don't know why Betts's (I'm just going to use his last name since it is public knowledge and is easier to type out than the Dayton Shooter) ideology matters in the context of his shooting. If you read the news reports about him you'd be quick to learn about the fact that he was apparently a rampant misogynist and gun freak during his high school days (and obviously after then) he would talk about a list of girls he wanted to rape at his high school, and another list for people who he wanted to kill and apparently was not punished for openly talking about this harshly enough/wasn't talked to about how this was fucked up to have or even joke about. Nothing about being a leftist really speaks volumes about wanting to shoot and murder 9 people (including your own fucking sister) in a shopping district. Another thing from this shooter was the lack of motive for killing everyone except for just having expressed an interest in killing people, no other motive other than that has come out yet.

Nothing about anything that I have just listed shows anything about being a leftist that could contribute to the shooting, maybe racial bias because 6/9 victims killed were black but that's a flimsy theory, but nothing about being a leftist at all could be the reasoning behind that. Maybe praising Satan could contribute though, I don't understand how Satanists operate and don't really feel like reading up on Satanism as a religion. Him being a leftist seems like a right-leaning talking point to show that "See leftists can do shootings too!!!!" or some shit like that, which should be obvious but like them being a leftist doesn't matter that's just like one random fun fact about the shooter. When it comes to right-leaning shooters, their ideology plays directly into the reason why they decided to shoot a bunch of innocent people.

In the end, we still have a White Supremacy, Gun, and Mental Health issue in the United States and they all need to be talked about, and fixed ASAP.

Just a bit of an end note, but I don't even think he is a leftist, just a liberal. The terms do get switched up a lot but have hugely different meanings. I think he is a liberal because I don't think asking people to vote blue, saying you'd vote for Elizabeth Warren, and being disappointed in the 2016 Presidential Election is enough to really be a leftist.

some people in this thread have already said it but with a lot of extra words so I'm going to try and sum it up quickly.
El Paso shooter: I have right-wing beliefs about hispanics and I am shooting up a mall because of it.
Dayton shooter: I like leftist politicians, also I'm going to shoot up some people.*
not all violence inherits the ideology of the perpetrator.

(that about sums it up, but ive got an extra paragraph of clarification here)

Now, see, the Dayton guy liked Elizabeth Warren, right? Warren likes to talk about breaking up big tech. Now, if someone who liked Warren shot up a Google office and left a manifesto about breaking up Google, then you could call them a shooter inspired by Warren/leftism, but for now, it's intellectually dishonest to say the Dayton shooter was inspired by his politics to shoot up a place.

*as of writing, the Dayton shooter's motives are still under investigation.

Fact of the matter is currently to distinguish them is that as far as we know the Daytona shooter was not motivated politically in his attacks and had a distinct history with violence (kicked out of school for having a Kill List (for boys) and a Rape List (for girls)). He also was described as a complete and utter bully by his classmates that terrorized and scared them.
Daytona shooter seems like it was a long time coming that he would act out like this
