What do you look for in a frag video?

There are two things I want to get across before continuing this post. The first thing is, if for some reason you remember the last time I made this thread, I'm sorry for making it again, despite it having been long enough for no one to realistically care. The second thing is while I do value the opinions of people who actually enjoy watching frag videos and sharing their opinions about them, whether or not those opinions are meant to be taken seriously to the point where they're considered from the editor, I cannot guarantee any response from this thread will carry through to anything I make. Now, I'm not saying they definitely won't, but I hate guaranteeing in situations like this.

Anyway, excluding the last video I made back in December for myself, I've been wanting to get back to making frag videos for the community, and possibly myself again. This can range from short frag clips to full-length frag videos to small LAN highlights to highlights even for LAN events such as ESEA LAN or the Insomnia series (good luck, Kaneco). And as cheesy as this sounds, I've been wanting to "reinvent" myself as an editor for this community while [hopefully] still keeping parts of my editing "style" that people have enjoyed.

So my question to you is: what about your favorite frag videos, or even ones you simply just like, makes you enjoy them as much as you do? Is it the player involved, or the players involved? Is it the editing theme or how well the video is organized? While I said I cannot guarantee I will (nor realistically can) take everyone's opinions into mind and act accordingly, I still do want to try to do the best I can to provide content from here on out that not only pleases me, but pleases the people who take their time to watch it.

An additional question, and somewhat of a shameless plug, is what do you think I can change about my videos that would not only subjectively, but objectively benefit my work? www.youtube.com/kirbaaaay/videos Thank you!

My favorite things about the good frag videos are generally how well the song goes with the way the video was made, the frags, the syncs, and the players. I want to see the frags, not lens flare and overly edited clips where I can't even see who the players are. Music is great but if you combine a great song with bad frags it just doesn't feel as satisfying to watch. Airshots, players, good music, syncs. I think those are the things I look for most in a frag video.

Establishing shots need to be quick, not too artsy. A steady stream of frags timed with music is nice, but don't keep me waiting for the next streak/airshot

Also at the end of the day, something that makes you want to re-watch that particular streak will always be a plus.

I like frag videos where people get salty

edit: Okay so this seems like a shitpost but be honest, too much for zblock is still like the best frag video ever made and it's 5 years old.

the video should not have mediocre frags with amazing frags, consistency is important.
needs good pace which will be most likely determined by the song.
editing to emphasize the frags and not the other way around.

no shitty over editness over a simple frag
having actual good frags and the cuts being well timed
good music and no shitty rap please
a decent color correction without it sacrificing colors
and no fucking dumb sfm smooths or shots

Syncing the music with frags for sure and creating hype. It mustn't be too cringey, though.

do those clips still happen in videos? might as well make an mge frag vid.

Air_DAMAGE NUMBERS

i've considered it, but for my current vid it won't happen. maybe in "less serious" vids later on.

Good frags with a song that makes me re watch the video over and over, just for the song.

The music plays a huge part in the frag video. Bad song, bad video.

You could put random sfm clips inbetween the frags, kinda like CUBE does.

^^^^ See frag movies created by AMS (especially Kondorstyle 2) or Salade au Thon (see French is Fucking Awesome). Add that with songs that you feel will fit and sync to the frags and good amount of editing, imo it's my favourite kind of frag movie.

airshots
3-6k's that arent spread out, like someone dming the world. must have a good hitsound to go with it. There's nothing like the feeling of hearing constant hitsounds

for scout frags you absolutely NEED to have damage numbers. it's an absolute must

I personally like giantic single skybox airshots from soldiers, the constant hitsound ping of demos that hit every sticky/pipe in a fight, and scouts that run into a crowd with the number '100' dancing all over the screen.

Music matters, even better when synced. If its a serious frag video then make sure people can actually see the frag without some weird ass camera zoom shit. The actual frag matters more to me aswell. I dont want to see an airshot from 2cm away even if it has the sickest editing. If i was nitpicky I guess the one thing I hate is when people turn off crosshairs for the clip, please leave them on ;_;

I know this sounds kinda cheesy but it's very important to keep edits your own. As in, your creative/artistic vision, not somebody elses.

For me personally, I have a very clean editing style, I don't like over the top edits or color correction and I just try to keep the frag as understandable as possible, and I put more of my vision into the song sync, clip cutting and transitions, not to say I wouldn't deviate from this; i've done it plenty of times for PotD but it depends on the frag, mood of the song, smooth, etc... Usually I just let the frag speak for itself. As a viewer I know how to appreciate more flashy edits tho as I know how much work they take.

I would say the single most underrated thing a lot of people editing videos disregard is clip cutting. It's the one thing that can transform the entire pace of a fragmovie and keep it super tight if done right. I've seen it so many times, even on major tf2 channels, clips ending too long after the frag, or starting too early into the frag and it really bothers me.

If it's a fragmovie (not a fragclip) we're talking about for me the biggest factor in enjoyment is the song. I usually plan my entire workflow (after recording) based on the song. Because a good song (or a song used in the right way) will link the frags smoothly and keep a very nice vibe to a movie. Syncing the song with the frags is a must (or should be) even if it's just major anchor points in the song, even if the frags are already good, the song can complement them even more and take it to an other level. Last but not least a good song choice is what makes a fragmovie memorable, you will be able to remember it in your head for ages, that feeling is even better if you don't know the artist or song and you get hooked to it because of that fragmovie. I still can remember watching Pop Culture by Cla for the first time, it was the first time I heard madeon as well, and watching such a work of art in front of me was a fantastic experience, both frags, editing and music.

One of the biggest factors for me is if I like the song/music. This is a hard thing to fulfill as everybody has different tastes...
