Can someone explain to me if a religious institution can still discriminate against gay marriage? Marriage under law has a different meaning than marriage in the religious context. I believe this case is an issue of law and equal protection since the defendant was trying to sign his name as surviving spouse of a dead man (which has legal complications, not religious ones). This is just one step in the right direction, there is going to be backlash from religious groups who will see their institutions being harassed and a result will still be able to legally discriminate homosexuals.
TLDR this was a legal definition of marriage, not a religious one and therefore has many implications such as Religious institutions still discriminating gays ["God hates Gays"] under their freedom to practice religion.

A store can say "no shoes no shirt no service"

Churches should be allowed to do the same without losing government funding. I'm all for gay marraige, but forcing an institution to participate in something that's explicitly against their beliefs is fine. Besides that, gay couples will probably face discrimination (no matter how uncalled for it is) if they're married in a Christian/Catholic setting. And imposing punishment in the form of reduced funding is severely crippling, especially since churches run solely off of donations, fundraisers, and said government money.

Why would they lose federal funding for their social services over the ruling.

Federal funding for churches set up a decade ago is only allowed because the money does not violate the Establishment Clause because it goes towards social services provided by churches and not actual church proselytization.

Churches can still marry or not marry whoever they want, that service is completely separate from the social services/community volunteering churches provide and the federal money that aids them in that.

It's the supreme court's job to ensure that the states do not violate the civil rights or liberties of citizens of the US using judicial review.

Welcome to Federalism.

I'd just like to say that to hate on religion is kind of hypocritical. I'd also like to say that it's possible to be religious and not be a stupid ass at the same time.

Churches have nothing to worry about @reddd

They can already refuse to marry straight couples for any number of reasons. If they were in danger of legal action due to refusal to marry - and you're worried about this. First, go down to the court house with a consenting legal age adult, marry them, wait the requisite time so you can't annul the marriage, and then get a divorce. Now find a consenting legal catholic female and try to have a catholic wedding. You will find in most cases that they will refuse to do this without a *lot* of required stuff being done first, and even then they may refuse to do it on the grounds that they'll refuse to recognize your divorce. Or, on the other hand, find a conservative Islamic mosque, and attempt to marry a Muslim woman in their building without having first converted to Islam (and even then they may still refuse). All of these cases probably happen every day throughout America - they can refuse to marry for any number of reasons, it's their prerogative. Now a justice of the peace, or the courthouse, due to this SCOTUS ruling cannot refuse to issue you a marriage license however, that *would* be grounds for legal action.

As happy as I am to see gay marriage allowed in more states, I'm concerned because the obvious next step for the Gay Illuminati is to now step out of the shadows and declare themselves the rulers of a unified world government.

(but seriously, so many of my FB friends proposed or were proposed to yesterday my entire feed seems like a constant stream of proposal pics it's p cool)

I don't really mind homosexuals having relationships, however them marrying doesn't really bode well with me. Not only does it screw over traditions, it also makes an abnormality look "normal".

Homosexuality is considered as a mental illness, the gay parades are a good evidence of that https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8YR9IV9Alc here's just an example of this in Brazil.

I think civil partnership would be enough, marriage means both changing the traditional way marriage is, and opening a door for homosexuals to raise children, which doesn't bode well with me because the reason why straight parents love their child is not because they generally love children, its because of biological reasons.

Mothers' hormones and fathers' responsibility are the reason why a straight family is strong. When you get homosexual families they are not going to be as committed to their children as straight parents are, not to mention the possibility of a homosexual family breaking up is higher than the possibility of a straight family breaking up because of numerous biological reasons.

How many people now are going to get "married" on paper for tax benefits.... This is ripe for abuse.

How will common law marriage work.... now that marriage is defined as being between the same or opposite sex. If you live with a friend/roommate for a few years are you then considered married?

I'm not gay, but IMO if I could sign a paper and pay $50 for a marriage licence and save a couple grand a year I probably would... LOL

Why is this plusfragged? Please don't tell me the majority of people here actually believe this. I don't feel like writing a really long post but please actually research and find out what religion is and all the different religions and their beliefs before making posts like this.

To be fair, alot of religion does separate countries and cause alot of issues. Doesn't mean it should be ruled out tho
