batemanI dont believe the result was scripted but I feel like over the past few races the FIA had "incentives" to add drama to the races, I can absolutely see Liberty Media having it done. I have no investment in either of the involved drivers but the stewarding inconsistency is just really bad for the integrity of the sport, Charlie would never.
also the brits in this thread are boiling lol

hard agree, liberty whisper in masis ear cause they need their tv ratings and it really harms the credibility of f1 as a sport.

im mostly angry at the stewards. i dont like the way max drives, i dont think its healthy for the sport to have people drive as he does, but im mostly angry at michael masi for his fucking terrible decision making, that has been terrible all season

This is the perfect way to end this season, because this race sums up why I have become more and more disenchanted with the state of F1 over the last three seasons after watching F1 for 25 years. If I wanted to watch a jury sport, there are plenty of options to choose from where they actually have rules and at least make some effort to apply them consistently. Imagine how Hamilton must feel, imagine the crap Verstappen is going to get even though he earned the title just as much as Hamilton.

Very controversial, FIA are clowns, but I will admit I'm glad Verstappen won and I think he deserves it overall. Props to Hamilton for being an absolute beast as usual, even tho he was back driving a spaceship in the last part of the season, so much better than any other car on the grid

well I would have been happy if we had a clean end to the championship regardless of Lewis or Max winning, but this wasn't clean, FIA has made decisions more for entertainment than fairness. Kind of lame.

Oh man Lewis deserved to win that race, pulled out some incredible pace with very worn tires. Way faster than the rest of the grid the entire time. But also had Mercedes pitted during either virtual or the safety car (like they said they would) they could've avoided the clean disadvantage for that final lap. Red Bull seemed more responsive in case of shenanigans which then heavily played in their favor.
Although entertaining, what a shitshow by the FIA at the end. Hope they don't pull the result, Max deserves the championship win.

Worst part about it is that it puts the focus on the FIA rather than the driving and Max's win. Like if it does get overturned, which I admittedly doubt it will, then it will always be thought of as a Championship decided off the grid rather than on. But of course Merc has good grounds to fight this, so its not gonna be resolved quickly. Meaning that until it does, the FIA and Masi are going to be undercutting Max's win with the constant attention on the poor decisions during the race, rather than Max's performance. Worst part is that this really is neither Lewis or Max's fault. Just the FIA.

What a shit show.

I'd like a soccer style referee to make calls during the race, not this post-race F5 nightmare.

Both cases dismissed.

Finally with (some) certainty we can say congratulations Max on a much deserved title. Hope next year is just as thrilling

If the sentence were "Any constructors competing in the Formula 1 World Championship will be required to receive $1 billion" and Red Bull were not given $1 billion, rest assured they'd be arguing that "any" does indeed mean "all".

I don't like the steward desicions at the austrian grand prix 2019 with verstappen forcing leclerc off the track in turn 3. Defensive driving shoud be about forcing the competetor off the racing line, not off the race track. Over the last couple of years i feel like overtakes are just being slightly ahead of the other driver at the apex, then force them of the track. And if the guy that was forced off the track gets out in front, we hear "He overtook me off the track. He has to give the positon back" at the radio. No way we would see anything like Arnoux vs Villeneuve in France 1979 by modern drivers.

Hamilton had Glock, Verstappen had Masi. They're even on ridiculous circumstances. Hopefully the next title fight is much cleaner.

catbergHamilton had Glock, Verstappen had Masi. They're even on ridiculous circumstances. Hopefully the next title fight is much cleaner.

The funniest thing about the Glock incident is that by him not pitting and staying out on dry tyres he actually GAINED positions and time. If he'd actually pitted and been on wet tyres he'd have been overtaken long before then. The whole narrative of "Hamilton bad" is literally fuelled by racist Italian and Spanish journalists.

The two incidents aren't even nearly comparable. At least that race was settled without stewards interference.

The real problem with this season has been Michael Masi's pure incompetency. I don't think that it's been blatant bias towards Verstappen, but his whole attitude of "they should race" to the point where even Alonso noticed the stewards being incredibly lax with penalties and started cutting corners on the first lap(s), gaining advantages. This type of hands off stewarding has led to really poor driving standards, something Verstappen has benefited from because Verstappen's attitude has ALWAYS been "either we leave this corner with me ahead or we both crash". Under Charlie Whiting this gradual erosion of the enforcement of the rules would never have happened and clear boundaries would have been set much earlier on. I don't think you'd have seen Verstappen making moves like he did at Brazil, Italy or Saudi Arabia, as well as Hamilton in Silverstone.

I get that Masi wanted to see the race finish as a "race", but pre-safety car there was 0 chance of Verstappen catching Hamilton barring tyre failure. The whole releasing only select lapped cars really does raise a question mark over the stewards' decisions. In a close fought championship there will now always be people who feel that the Championship was stolen rather than actually earned fairly on track. As much as I dislike Max and especially his father, he did deserve to win the championship, but only in a fair manner.

Masi in the bin for next season please. Anyone with a backbone instead

Max is just incredibly arrogant and not a nice person. I know people who've worked for Heineken at races and they've said he's just nasty compared to most drivers. He sees fans as an annoyance when actually interacting with them, compared to most drivers who are just grateful for everything.

Didn't know about the controversy regarding his father, but I think Max being seen as arrogant and not as publicly positive might chalk up to cultural differences. Ofc generalizing here but dutch people tend to be more straightforward, so him not being grateful for everything and stuff is probably just brutal honesty instead of PR

Maybe unpopular opinion: I think Leclerc is actually generally a more aggressive driver than Max, Ferrari's position this year + Max fighting for the championship has just brought more spotlight onto Verstappen. If we get a Max vs Leclerc championship rivalry in the upcoming years I think it'll be a lot dirtier than Hamilton vs Verstappen.
