Why use P-REC over integrated demo support?

Hi all, I've heard around quite often that people recommend P-REC over using the integrated in-game Demo Support feature. Is this still true? If so, what's the reasons for using it? What sort of features does P-REC have that makes it better (or even required for comp)? Or maybe there's a bug in the integrated system which makes it worse to use. Please let me know, I'm curious!

its been like 5 years since i tried using the integrated one so I might be wrong but I think that 'auto-record comp matches' only recorded matchmaking games and 'auto-record tournament matches' recorded casual matches

edit: confirmed yes it still records casual

Nope, it works perfectly fine. Many people in low divs (including myself) use it.

I think Mr. billw's saying it additionally records valve casual games (not necessarily desired) since they also use mp_tournament, not that it doesn't work at all.

Auto-record all tournament matches. I just checked my demo folder and no casual matches are in there. I also have scoreboard screenshots enabled for when a match ends so I can double verify.

EDIT: Ok so I tested it in casual and checked my console and it seemed to be failing to record casual games(?). So I was actually wrong, it does indeed try to record casual games as well. I reinstalled my game with the same recording settings and sure enough, it's grabbing casual matches.

However, it's not taking screenshots of the scoreboard at the end of casual games, so you can still know which demos come from a scrim / match. So it's servicible but ultimately is less convenient overall and bloats more than P-REC.

The in game demo recording starts as soon as you load in, which means it records all of pregame before both teams ready up. I use it because P-rec is Windows only, but not having to fast forward through 20 minutes of pregame to grab a clip is handy.

mastercomsWhat would p-rec bookmark have over the demo support bookmark feature?

Nothing at all. I know that you can bind a key to ds_mark and a chat bind but it's just not the same.

To be honest though P-REC's file naming system and boomarks.txt document is much more user friendly. This may have been fixed but trying to play demos with hyphens (-) in the name would crash my game for years so I just went back to p-rec

Is there not ds_screens 1? What does prec_screens do differently vs. the one in game?

maraudeRNothing at all. I know that you can bind a key to ds_mark and a chat bind but it's just not the same.

Ah I see, that comes up in chat? I thought it was just a console log. That's hilarious!

I think hyphens don't crash anymore, but yeah I get that about the names being friendly. What are the differences with the bookmarks.txt document vs. the in-game one?

ingame demo recording records EVERY killstreak INCLUDING pre-game.

Inferior in every way.

Killstreak bloat is a big one, especially if you pub or play mvm, because it literally logs every kill of a killstreak in its own line.

i don't have either to compare atm because i'm on a clean install but I'm sure others can share specifically what the differences are

So what I have so far:

  • Does not properly filter out non-competitive matches (Casual, MvM)
  • Does not filter out pregame & postgame
  • Limited file name options (lacking map name)
  • Doesn't support SourceTV status (in screenshot)

Yeah if someone can demonstrate, it could help a lot!

One reason I recommend P-REC to my players is because it's easier to remember. The message when it begins recording has helped my team catch each other. When reinstalling the game we've found it easier to remember to download P-REC+Hud+Config than to change a setting in-game. This has, and could have, prevented us from failing demo checks in the past.

but ds is just a command in your config anyway so thats not really valid.

but yea prec is better because it doesnt activate in warmup and pubs

beyond the extra features and more bespoke functionality, its also just as easy, if not easier to set up prec for basic functionality than it is to set up the built in demo recorder. if i were coaching a team of 6 newbies i would 100% rather send them a zip file and tell them where to put it than do a walkthrough of what settings to turn on

I just like being able to change all these sounds. Also prec_notify 2 has tiny green text in the corner and is a lot prettier and imo a much more noticable notification while being less intrusive as the super giant screentext ds_notify 2 has, I sometimes turn chat off so I can't use 1. And yeah the map name makes it very easy. The bright orange text in the console is super noticable too compared to demosupport

Not sure if you care about the other direction, but I delete P-REC sometimes since it crashes valve comp.
