note: these are the things i've heard from great demo players teaching newbie mixes. i have like 100 hours total on the class and half of them are MvM, so take my advice with a grain of salt

any demoman that can make low heal priory situations work are gods, even if they dont get a lot of picks, as long as they can put out a ton of damage for the combo to clean up and at the same time, land pipes in 1v1s when they get focused, they are heros. Just being able to win 1v1's with scouts with pipes is so important.

I would say also just being able to make use of quick arrow heals while letting scouts get more buffs is essential.

Demo should be top priority for heals, he's the only class that can't dodge damage. If your team is doing what you're suggesting then they're doing it wrong. Demo can also deal a lot more damage in a teamfight than a scout can, which is why you want to tank them and not scouts.

Make rollouts consitent
Learn to use stickies and pipes in combination, don't think of them as two seperate modes. (i.e. stickying areas to force people into pipes)
Don't rely on pipe aim to win you fights, stickies are usually the way to go
Locking down a choke is more important than dealing with the first guy through in most situations
Positioning is king.

from a dm perspective, a lot of new demos make the mistake of thinking that they need to grind their pipe aim, but that sticky aim is 'just left click + right click"

in fact, being solid with pipes is significantly easier than being actually good with stickies ever since the demo nerf, and being effective with stickies requires a lot of time investment- whether in mge or just in real game settings

demo is also the class where positioning and ammo management flow most directly into aim- if you are desperately trying to fight a scout or soldier at close range while reloading one sticky or pipe at a time you're probably going to die. as domo said, good demos use the totality of their 12 projectiles to make dm fights easier- it's a lot harder for a scout to dodge pipes when there are also a bunch of stickies around them, or for a combo to avoid pipespam when there's 4 of them etc.

hardest part of demo for most people seems to be ammo management, ie making sure you have stickies & pipes loaded when your team needs the extra damage and not just wasting them on worthless dpm

One thing I think is super important that no one else has mentioned is area denial. IMO this is the most important part of demo and this is how you get a lot of your damage outside of dming people. E.G. Funneling them into areas, making areas of points unplayable for the other team.

This also creates lots of space for your team to walk into and can create almost "safe zones" to play from
