Map Callouts Origins.

Not the most serious of topics but I was just on the comp.tf wiki and looking at some callout names. I take a look at sunshine and see that they have a call out called "Tetris". Another being on Granary "Lunchbox". Does anyone know where these names came from or were they just picked because they where quick to say?

Most of the time, they just get picked up as the go-to lingo from pugs. Theres not too much to think of it. People just call things what they roughly looked like/what was easy to call.

The only one with a story to tell is maybe haunter on badlands. http://etf2l.org/forum/user/77/ he used to be a roamer for TCM back in the day. He would always jump from that spot when people pushed in from choke and it got common for people to say, watch out for haunter which basically turned into, watch out for that spot haunter usually jumps from

Don't think this is true, I never recalled any version of the map having water flowing like a River? Maybe the absolute earliest versions of the map I never played - I believe the name came from when Team Infused and teams adopted it over time.

i have been bullied relentlessly because some idiots in ugc scrims taught me that lower on snakewater was called "burger" because of the poster with a burger on it. i admittedly have not been able to find a single other soul that knows it as burger. i just wish i had corrected this mistake several years ago and saved myself the embarrassment.

also, is there a good resource to find all the current most common map callouts in tf2, or is comp.tf still the best?

honestly i think some of the weird calls are from pyyyour and lange streams, i remember when they played IM. i watched them stream scrims when they did map reviews or call outs before scrims they originated the china call on viaduct and the africa call on snakewater. im not sure if they originated the cheese call on snakewater tho

cafe call on sunshine i think was from seanbuds stream too

idk i think a lot of them are taken from popular streams and people just copied it

So on the original Gullywash underneath last point (Where the small health pack is) was filled with water though I think Arnold removed this fairly on in development though so very few people probably actually played that version.

Hildreth was right about Infused (Former Twisted Play) creating the term River. IIRC it was because the song Riverside was big at the time and they needed a name for that place of the map so they started calling it Riverside as a bit of a meme and because they were one of the teams who played it the most—as it was only just coming out and wasn't in the regular map pool yet—the term just got adopted by others through pugs and mixes. Obviously, it was shortened to river for convenience.

I'm less sure about cheese on Snakewater but I always believed it was because you would check that area for a 'cheese' play aka a soldier or scout hiding there. So you'd check for any cheese plays while capping mid to ensure your medic would be kept safe and that was the most common area for people to hide when the map was first popularised.

Other than that most call outs are named about something specific in the room or area that made it unique. I'm pretty sure shithouse came about because it was either a shit version of actual house or more likely because it looked like an outhouse aka a shithouse.

I'm pretty sure Africa on snakewater is called that because there's a stain on the floor texture there which is shaped a bit like the African continent.

No it's because the entire spot looks like Africa

and sewers on Process was an actual sewer in it's early versions

Isn't that entire area shaped like Africa too?

Pretty sure people call choke on snake burger is because there's a burger poster there
