The sad thing is, the conservatives in this thread are so close to being right. They're right about the DNC's idiocy in misunderstanding the anti-establishment bent of this election. They're right about Hillary (whatever you think about her on a personal/political level) being a terrible candidate in a pragmatic sense, who was seemingly only given the job because it felt like "her turn". They're right about the nasty tone of the election coming down to a "corrupt criminal cunt" vs a "bullying bigoted buffoon", which led to a lot of Americans creating a false equivalency between the two and either not turning out to vote or snap voting for 1 of the 2 for pretty unsatisfactory reasons.

The only area where they are wrong is in painting Donald Trump as in any way the solution to any of their problems. Here we have a rich megalomaniac who has spent his entire life only caring that the system stay rigged in his favor (including through, among other things, donating to Clinton), who has misled the angry white working class into thinking he will fight for them, despite having no substantive policy ideas and a complete lack of understanding how the world works.

The American people want populism so much that they voted for the worst possible populist package. Hopefully next time around we can get a true progressive populist, one who can unite poor whites and poor people of color and help them realize how they're being fucked by the corporations of the world.

I'm a big fan of the writing my man Robert Reich has been doing on the election, some of it was pretty prescient:

Ty mustard for actually being able to admit that some things were right and wrong

But damn some people can't swallow their pride no matter how much the results point a certain direction

Hell even I know that there are still some rough waters that need to be sailed through no matter who is in the White House

It's easier when you only affiliate with the Democratic Party out of necessity when compared to the alternative

I don't consider myself a liberal, I consider myself a progressive and a democratic socialist and I think a lot more Americans feel that way than the Dems are willing to admit

SpaceCadetwhymeoReading through this thread seeing all the Trump supporters trying to say it had nothing to do with race when the only major demographic trump did well with was white people.

The fact that Clinton was the establishment candidate and racism can both play a role. It doesn't just have to be one thing.

So wait a minute, let me understand.

Trump did well with white people so that makes it a racist vote. (not sure of the exact % just yet)
Obama in 2012 had 93% of the black vote and in 2008 had 95% of the black vote. Racism had no impact on those?

You can't have it both ways.

Black people avoid the gop because their policies target them and make their lives worse. Voting for the gop is voting to reinforce a power structure that makes being white better than other races

Democrats are far more egalitarian and dont run on a platform that negatively affects specific ethnic groups. Thats why its racist for one but not the other. All the white people voting to keep black people out of the suburbs is racist. All the black people voting against that isnt

I dont like the people saying hillary lost because everyone got called racist or bigotted. Its a really sad thought in an abstract sense. Assume that all the people who voted for trump were kkk members or w/e: if calling them racist or bad people loses the election does that really say anything good?

People keep trying to dismiss getting called racist by saying people were tired of it. They might be tired of it, but that doesn't mean they stopped being racist. Assuming both sides are half right in the sense where racism was a motivating factor and being called racist was a motivating factor for the GOP then racism is still an issue. Calling a spade a spade shouldnt be so triggering to so many people but the fact that everyone got upset about it doesnt refute the base argument that race is still a motivating factor for republican voters. Do we really want to be the country where people would rather say "no im not" and avoid introspection? At the end of the day if the GOP wasnt interpreted as racist then calling them racist wouldnt be such a common thing that the base could rally around it. Id rather people take time to explain why their policies arent racially motivated instead of just saying they arent racists themselves, so they could never vote for something racist

It was p obviously a bad political move tho.

How have democrats fucked black people?

How does that change the fact that most people see the gop as being bad for minorities? Youre just deflecting to the other party being shit for a racial group instead of defending against the claim that the republicans are WORSE THAN the democrats for blacks. It isnt a situation where both groups are bad so you can go away. One is worse than the other

Wasn't Obama supposed to bring substantial change to inner cities and wasn't that one of his main selling points during his campaign? Now I could be wrong if there's been a substantial improvement in the inner city areas, and it's entirely possible, but I don't recall reading much if any at all about how inner cities have gotten massive improvements

The economy as a whole has improved and the ACA was definitely a big boost for anyone in true poverty.

Even if he didnt deliver, he campaigned on issues that would help instead of hurt. Wouldnt that make him better than the GOP?

You can't seem to grasp that other people don't necessarily agree with you on what helps or hurts people. For me Donald Trump ran on the promise to undo the destruction globalism has brought upon the middle and lower-middle class. All politicians campaign on issues people believe will help, how the fuck could anyone win if they campaigned on issues people universally agreed would hurt? Come on now.

Inherently racist might be hard to find. Race motivates things like voter suppression and welfare cuts and immigration issues though, even if they all have nonracial components.

Right, there were a few things that did improve, but do democrats actually focus a lot of their efforts in the inner cities only during election time or year round? It's probably much better than the republicans but Trump laid out a good plan that would bring jobs to these people. It wouldn't be a retail store job that's professional, but Trump's plan was to knock out a lack of jobs and rebuilding some things such as highways, effectively killing 2 birds with one stone.

He also told the people to give him a chance, and as a business person, when you introduce anything new that you claim to be "better" than the standard, a lot of people are going to be skeptic about it. But once you get momentum and get people to understand that this crazy idea might actually work, people are pretty likely to jump onboard. And that's what's at stake for Trump: if he does an awful job, he won't be in office very long. But If he does do a better job, regardless of what people think of him, he can certainly become more favored as a president that gets things done rather than just talking about it and letting it die over time, hoping that people forget about it.

see my dude you can't just say race motivates things and call them racists
wellfare cuts are because republicans are more right wing so they prefer smaller government i.e removing or cutting government programs
as for voter suppression and immigration you'd have to give specific examples or how its based upon race
