Trouble choosing a main

I know this is a sort-of thing where you "just need to play until you find it" but even though i have 1500 hours in Tf2 and I know it isn't that much I still find it hard to believe that I haven't chosen or atleast tried maining a class in the long-term.
I have always looked for a hard-to-master class with a high skill ceilling. I really want to get into competitve and IMO I have equal skill through all the classes.

Any tips?

Hours:
Solly: 100 h
Demo: 80 h
Scout: 55 h
Spy: 45 h
Sniper: 30 h
Pyro: 30 h
Med: 15 h
Engi: 14 h
Heavy: 4 h

Like 70% of my Tf2 playtime is on scout and I gotta say, I have a lot more respect for people that are equally good on all classes. So pick whatever you have the most fun on (even if it's pyro/spy, don't mind the elitists, its a game, you play it to have fun). If you like all classes equally, play all of them equally.

in a competitive setting demoman is probably the hard-to-master class with a high skill ceilling you're looking for.
The competitive scene also needs more demomen so if you want to get into comp in a couple of months once you're getting the hang of it you'll be able to find a team relatively easy

From the PUGs I've done and watched, getting a Medic always seems harder than finding a Demoman. Regardless, they are in really short supply so you can get away with being a meh Medic (Like me!) and still being acceptable.

pugs =/= actual league play

demos and meds are always in short supply for actual teams because demo is hella hard against actual coordinated teams (aka not pug teams)

Since you got a decent amount of hours on most classes, go with whatever class you enjoy playing the most. If you choose a class you don't enjoy, it's hard to improve on it because you don't even want to play it. Play some lobbies in a highlander or a 6s setting as a start to improving on a class, and then you'll have a main class. Then learn the other classes.

if you like all the classes, try joining a team that has an open spot and people you like and dont even look at the class you'll be playing.

At the end of your first season, consider whether you liked your class or if another one seemed like it was more fun/rewarding. Find another team that allows you to play that class and repeat until you've found the class you like. Playing a season or 2 on flank and deciding you like pocket more isn't going to make you die or something

Fair point, and that's what I was trying to allude to, so I'll try again.

Without coordination, they are certainly difficult. But it is the same with coordination as the enemy does too. Medic and Demoman happen to be my two favorites so I put up with it, and it helps that I'm half decent. However, what class you chose comes down to what format you like. If you prefer 6s like most of us here, Go for Scout, Soldier, Demoman, or Medic. While the demand for the latter two is twice that of the others, there are two of the others to balance it out. If you like HL, really go for what you enjoy the most. Beyond that, I would advise diversifying so you can take multiple roles if need be.

Dumb question perhaps but shouldn't your class played hours add up to about 1500?

Hours on record just records the number of hours the game is open, this includes time spent in the main menu

Playtime (hours) are hours spent in an actual server and is much more accurate in terms of actual playtime

I'd say Demo is the most fun class if you master it. Too bad I'm already a Solly main.

I'd look to choose a class keeping in mind that class's playstyle in competitive, what type of practice you most enjoy, and what sort of responsibility you might enjoy.

Do you want to play both 6s and HL in the future? You might want to main scout, soldier, demo, or medic.

Do you think you'd like to practice jump maps, find hitting directs/airshots very rewarding, and want to either be a major playmaker or the person take heals and getting a ton of damage/frags? Play soldier, and learn roamer/pocket.

Do you have good hitscan and movement, like surfing, and maybe want to improve numerous classes simultaneously? Maybe try scout, and practice your engi/heavy/spy/sniper play.

Do you like having a lot of responsibility and your life being highly valued, with a lot of focus on game sense? Play a combo class like demo or medic.

Are you going to be insanely good, or would you rather a higher likelihood of actually being picked up? Pocket and demo mains are in short supply, becoming proficient at either will increase your chances of finding a 6s team.

In HL, demo, heavy, and GOOD scout mains are tough to find. There are a ton of sniper and pyro mains.

Good luck : )

Sure, but it seems odd to have 1500 hours overall and only 400 ish of that spent in games.
