for those of you unaware, if you are infected with The Virus it means you are no longer able fully enjoy casual gaming. either consciously or subconsciously, you will constantly look for optimizations in your game of choice.
ive recently been made aware that i have many symptoms of The Virus, such as:
Show Content
- in a ~2 year period of my life, i only launched tf2 to play mge, dm, scrims, matches, or watch demos exclusively. i did not even play a pub during this time
- i played persona 5 twice so that the second time i could optimize my social links and max out all my personas of choice (my second playthrough took an extra ~50 hours)
- the last time i played minecraft i built an iron farm along with various other automated farms, which was fairly tedious. when i finished making these farms i beat the ender dragon and lost interest in the game
- in SSX 3, i learned about the 2 monster tricks that give you the most points, and completely disregarded every other trick
- in madden franchise mode, i would sign a UDFA qb with high throw power to a 7 year contract and funnel a shit ton of volume into his stats, eventually becoming 99 ovr by his 3rd year, all while taking up virtually 0 of my cap space. i never signed outside linebackers because their contract wasnt worth it, and i would always trade guys at the trade deadline on their contract year to get a huge haul every draft. after a couple of seasons my teams were always 90+ ovr
- in swbf2 2005 i turned off reinforcements on hoth so i could farm vehicle crits with the rocket launcher. when i ran out of ammo i would respawn. this was to unlock the award launcher. in galactic conquest i always bought sniper first, followed by garrison, so i could hard carry my team every fight. i did not lose a single time with this strategy
- in tekken 7 the first thing i learned was the highest damaging combo off of all my launchers, followed by the frame data of all my neutral tools. i spent nearly 100 hours practicing tekken 7 offline before i even played against another human online
the point i am making here is that i am ass at being a casual gamer. The Virus has taken casual gaming away from me.
do any of you also suffer from The Virus? id love to hear about your many woes that come with it. thank you for hearing my story.

it's casual do whatever u want; it doesn't matter
go do dumb stuff, try hard stuff, friendly stuff - try new things

It goes deeper than this, but most of you aren't ready for that conversation.

i am free from the virus, i love casual gaming. stressing about gaming is bad for the soul

Sorry about your condition bro, must be very scary and difficult to live with. I've been able to avoid the virus all these years by experiencing a really GOOD single player RPG. Don't watch any videos, just load that thang up and play.
My most recent go-to has been Cyber Punk:
Launch game
Max video settings; path tracing; 60-70fps; Full volume.
Slow pan and stare at scenery, sit through all dialogue.
Call up Panam.
Life doesn't get much simpler. I hope this finds you in good spirits. Hang in there!

yeah what sigh said, just don't look up vids or anything related to the games mechanics or plot for that matter, just makes the experience better
there's some youtuber / streamer playing minecraft and he is devoted to figuring out everything by himself and apparently he figured out pretty complicated redstone contraptions by himself.
maybe try emulating something similar so you can distract yourself and possibly come back more eager to game than ever?

if you have some money lying about the easiest way to get rid of The Virus is to just buy a console and play every fucking mainstream singleplayer story/rpg game you can get your hands on. if you physically cannot aim The Virus slowly dies

Unlike the other posters I think like you reece I have a full blown fully progressed version of The Virus. As an example for persona 4 I literally did what you described for p5 on my first run, constantly reloading saves while doing so, because I have extreme mental illness. This was blind also for reference. There's basically no point in doing this (especially since there is also ng+ content lmao) but it would legitimately bother me if I did not optimize my days correctly.
That being said my experience is not exactly the same.
reecedo any of you also suffer from The Virus? id love to hear about your many woes that come with it.
For me I think I'm too far gone because I don't see it as a downside outside of wasting a ridiculous amount of time; tbf this is a pretty fucking bad downside. But in terms of enjoyment it has not diminished for me; I don't really find it stressful and it serves the same purpose as I imagine casual gaming does for others.
I think roguelikes are far and away the best game to play if you have The Virus though. It avoids the problem of "by the time you are done optimizing, the game is over" that you described with minecraft, avoids pacing problems that hyperoptimization can cause for story games like jrpgs, and you can make an argument that optimizing your runs to increase win rate is sort of the "point" of a roguelike and thus preserving the spirit of the game. IME it's also best if you try to optimize a bit on your own first completely blind; get a sense of the game and develop intuitions for what's optimal. From there you can look at other resources/players and if there's differences in what they view and what you view as optimal you can sort of reevaluate why you came to your own conclusion and why they came to a different one.
In unrelated news I have recently gotten addicted to a certain horse girl roguelike so I may need to be euthanized.

Soloqueueing pubs and playing medic will heal you and your need for control. The virus will throw a fit but so long as you can push through the discomfort and reach the other side, your eyes will widen to a much more beautiful view

the virus is a myth perpetuated by Big Casual to trick you into thinking that if you try your hardest at everything, you must be a loser
you have all heard the phrase "given the opportunity, players will optimize the fun out of a game"
but what many people who do not have The Virus don't know
OPTIMIZATION IS FUN!!!
its fun to figure out what the best method for achieving the best results is. it's FUN to learn how to practice those methods efficiently, and watch yourself improve at these skills over real time. speedrunners are The Virus. challenger LoL players are The Virus. REAL LIFE OLYMPIANS HAVE THE VIRUS.
the virus is GOOD, it gives you passion to see your favorite hobbies and passions to their limits, and then beyond for those who are dedicated enough to continue

Saw a HealthyGamerGG video about this recently.
I had The Virus through the end of high school and my first two years of uni. It feels like prison because it stems from a desire to prove yourself. Instead of the main motivation being curiosity, it becomes ego. Many such cases!
