RGL and Metal footsteps ( ° ͜ʖ͡°)╭∩╮

Rgl considers metal footsteps to be cheating, and non impact based. Someone has received a permeant ban on rgl after they mirrored a ban from ETF2L over metal footsteps due to that being their second "cheating" offense.

The impact based punishments are only for sniper scope removal and nothing else
So as it stands now, the metal footsteps fall directly under cheating so there isn't really any leeway for it

These footsteps come with cleantf2+ so if you absent mindedly type y to all those addons, https://imgur.com/a/UJiv45e
RGL considers you to be a cheater and you deserve to be banned. If you type help for the surface properties, it informs you that it removes bullet impact and matches footstep sounds to be the same.

It is so easy to not notice you have this installed, on accident we even found video of the head admin using it, which they have since unlisted the video
https://streamable.com/n9iaer if they take down the video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hk9m9J8QmiA original from their YouTube channel, at the time of posting this is unlisted.

many people have never realized that this was against the rules or even installed, ignorance isnt an excuse as for it being disallowed, it is still concerning that exa was most likely one of those people who never even realized it was installed, the date of the video is also after rgl wrote an article detailing it https://imgur.com/a/OFlZXFD written by exa himself ( ° ͜ʖ͡°)╭∩╮

One more thing that bugs me extensively about it is enforcement, the only way anyone could ever be banned for this is to have raw recording of your gameplay or streaming with audio, unless rgl reinvented the fucking wheel, doesn't show up in pov demos.

The idea that footsteps, have more impact than giving sniper more spatial awareness, or rate hacking, is utterly ludicrous.
[1003.1] - Cheating
RGL does not tolerate cheating in TF2 in any form. If RGL receives evidence (demos, server or anti-cheat software logs, etc) of someone cheating anywhere in TF2 (including public servers, scrims, and PUGs (Pick-Up Games)), that person will be subject to league penalties. There is no appeal process. If another player on their team undoubtedly knew/aided/supported their cheating, they also may be subjected to a ban. When players take part and participate in our league, RGL expects all of our players to keep their accounts cheat-free. If a player gets banned for a cheating related offense, all matches the player participated in during the season will be overturned.

Cheating(Aimbot/ESP)

1st offense: 2-Years
2nd offense: Permanent Ban
VAC Bans: 2-Years (Unless confirmed non-TF2 related)

You can accidentally install these footsteps through cleantf2+ THE HEAD ADMIN DID, how can someone accidentally rate hack.

I don't want to witch-hunt exa, obviously, I only bring him up to point out that people can install this without knowing, without malice, and without the intention to cheat. So id much rather see this be based in impact than a possibility of a flat TWO year ban, you cant install spy scripts on accident, you cant install the medic train horn on accident, many people have and will probably continue to install this on accident and not notice.

RGL does state clearly the rules surrounding surface properties, I'm more concerned that people have it installed without even noticing, especially now that someone is permad because of it.

As a heads up, as I told Jas yesterday, we've been in discussions over metal footsteps for the past few weeks about the ruling and there will be announcements regarding it in the coming weeks. Most of the points in this thread were already POVs we were discussing internally, which was also relayed to Jas yesterday. We will keep this thread in mind as we come to a conclusion regarding metal footsteps.

It might be worth reconsidering the length of the ban until its either patched out or the plug-in itself is directly addressed at a rules level. I'm sure there are plenty of people using it without knowing, which is unfair to those who were hunted down for it/those who are hurt directly by it (spy mains mostly)

This is true, we did have a conversation about all of this, and they do seem to be taking this situation relatively seriously from what I can tell at least.

Yup, for now, we have to stick to being consistent with the AC rules we have currently until we come to a proper conclusion on exactly how we deal with metal footsteps going forth. When we do come to that conclusion, active bans regarding that change will be updated accordingly. For example, in Jas's case, his ban would be reduced to it's updated ban length.

I randomly clicked on stabby's stream recently and noticed he was using this almost immediately, it's EXTREMELY noticeable compared to regular footsteps, you don't have to have your volume turned up that loud, I'm not really sure how you can not notice that you have a sound mod like this installed if you've got a functioning pair of ears

The key thing here is that you can't enforce the rule. Since this modification can only be detected by sharing a gameplay video, it only catches people who aren't aware of the rules.

Feel free to completely ignore this rule if you don't stream or record.
