usually about 150 fps in 6s (maybe like 120 in teamfights)

then like avg 90 fps in hl.

id also like to be able to stream and keep 144+ fps but that might be beyond the budget

You see, the problem is you want to go from avg 90 to constant 250+ fps. That means you need a CPU that's more than 3 times as fast. None exist.

I have an MSI Optix G24C, cost me 170. Should be similar for you. It's a pretty great monitor, smooth responsive and good looking. It also doesn't wobble and is very solid in build quality, a rarity for cheap 1080p144 monitors. The freesync window (90 to 144) is a bit weird, and there is no adjustable height (I put my graphics card box underneath it), but for the price you can't complain. Check if it's available to you.

Depends on what's actually available and what features you want. You know, the usual, Sync vs strobing, TN vs VA and so on.

smesiwhat 144hz monitor would y'all recommend under 200$ if possible?

Save a bit more and pick up the 240hz LG 27GK750F-B. Well worth the extra money. I got mine as a open box for $200.

i ended up getting a viewsonic XG2402
what i was mostly interested in was that it should have as little ghosting as possible and from the research it seems to have a good panel for that and has decent colors
i have never been bothered with tearing, i could've def something like an acer XFA240 which appareantly has g-sync for my nvidia gpu. i heard some freesync monitors work on nvidia gpus but then again i don't really care about it

i was considering on getting a sceptre E255B-1658A because 165hz is a bigger number than 144hz even if ik the difference will be minimal, but i've heard sceptre monitors break easily so i just went for the viewsonic one

any good 1440p 144hz monitor you guys would recommend? any sync tech (or none at all, thats fine) since I still haven't decided on which GPU I'll be going with. Looking for 1-2ms response time, 24-27 inches

Hi all,

I don't know a ton about PC builds, but I'm considering investing in a new one for professional video editing.

My budget's around $3,000 currently, and I'm looking for a computer powerful enough for smooth editing with a moderate level of special fx applied to projects that I'm working on in Premiere and After Effects. Being able to edit more plain stuff (e.g. with lower levels of fx) in 4k would be nice as well, but not required.

This page by Puget Systems seems like a good starting point to base my hardware around -- what are your opinions on the basic build they have laid out there?

I'd be looking at a Ryzen 3900x, it will outperform intels 9900k in all of those tasks. Maybe something like this https://pcpartpicker.com/list/nDrnWD

I have a few issues with the build you linked.

My first issue with that build is that 64GB is a bit excessive for 4K video editing. If you were going to be working with 8K video it would definetly be worth it. Also the ram speed is only 2666, for video editing you'd want at the very least 3000mhz or faster. If you get 64GB and aren't using literally 32GB or more there won't be any benefit in having more ram that you're not using.

The cooler isn't the best. Noctua isn't a bad brand but if you were to go with a 9900k you'd want to overclock it as close to 5.0ghz as you can get it, and doing that on an air cooler is going to be a lot more difficult and result in increased temperatures, a good liquid cooler would be better for overclocking.

The storage is abysmal. The SSDs are both really fast but they aren't big enough. The 1TB m.2 970 1TB is where you'd want to have windows installed and all your applications/ programs, and whatever current project you're working on, but then you would also want at least 5TB or more of storage. 1.5TB isn't enough when you're working with 4K video.

Decided to give up on the laptop life and go for a decent build for once, this is what I have so far: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/dHFyw6
The parts I picked are more of a rough guideline as I'm totally clueless as for what brands/etc I need, which is why I'm looking for feedback, primarily for getting the best build out of my budget (was originally ~$1500, but willing to go up to roughly $2000 if the performance gain is worth the extra $$). As for what I'm looking for:

  • no real preference as far as games goes, mostly just looking for a best all around build (but do plan to do a lot of emulation stuff)
  • will probably overclock
  • no plans to stream or anything with video editing/other high end tech needs
  • Ideally, I would like for the build to be as quiet as possible (although not really a fan of water cooling)
  • needs support for WIFI
  • Monitor is more or less a placeholder, I'm not too familiar with them and only thing I know is that I want something with 144hz (or more?) at 1080p (or 1440p, if the price for those monitors are reasonable), and screen brightness is relatively important
  • Was hoping for a dual monitor setup (with some generic 60hz monitor) but I'm perfectly fine with waiting until another time to get that monitor if it doesn't fit the budget
  • I have microcenters close by as an option for buying parts

Building asap.

side note: I've heard that you need to be particular about buying cables for the monitor, do those usually come with the monitor itself or do I need to buy those separately?

Don't guy with the 3600x, see this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDV7aA6arVo&t=611s
Basically the performance between the 3600 and the 3600x aren't that significant and isn't worth spending $50.

You could ditch the air cooler because all ryzen CPU's will come with a stock air cooler, you said you wanted to overclock but the 3rd gen ryzen CPUs don't overclock/ gain much from overclocking because of the precision boost technology that is built into them. You can overclock them but it won't gain you as much performance as overclocking an intel CPU would. If you want to overclock I'd overclock your GPU, you'll see the most performance gain out of that.

Before buying any parts I'd strongly recommend going to a microcenter and see what their prices/ discounts are. Depending on the store you can get really good deals on parts and it can save you a lot of money.

As for your question about buying cables for your monitor, the monitor should come with cables. If it's a 144hz monitor it will at least come with a display port cable which you need in order to run 144hz. You won't need to buy a cable.

Also if you are looking to cut down the cost of your build you could also consider AMD's new GPU's like the 5700 or 5700XT, they are very competitive for the price. Here's a good video reviewing the cards https://youtu.be/dZlJbfiVGic

Of course you can lock the fans to max speed and beat the D15 by 1°C at the cost of going full jet engine.
https://imagescdn.tweaktown.com/content/8/1/8106_39_nzxt-kraken-x52-liquid-cpu-cooler-review.png
However you can get the same performance and noise for half the price with just any big lump of metal (e.g. HR-02) and a 5k rpm fan for half the price.

Mobo is just for the VRMs I assume so there's cheaper equivalent options.
Same with the RAM although I haven't checked the QVL.

More reasonable HDD. Paying for NAS features makes no sense. Buying an HDD for speed when you've got a 1TB SSD makes no sense. Even 2x5 TB 7200 rpm would be cheaper and the 10W extra really don't matter. If it's about sequential speed for rendering then go RAID0. Cheaper and much faster than any 10 TB HDD, no matter how expensive.

850W is overkill. Even if you push the 3900X to 200W it'd still only be 600W total. Where do the other 250W come from? Pushing the 2080 Ti to 500W? Yeah no. And even then it's hard to justify paying 15$ more than for a Focus Plus Platinum for an HX Platinum.
Anyway highest I'd go would be 750W if you're really worried. https://pcpartpicker.com/product/jBZ2FT/evga-power-supply-220p20750x1

Has already been said but just to reiterate:
NH-D15 SE-AM4 or it won't fit the socket. Maybe a bit overkill for the 3600X though.
Fuck aftermarket thermal paste. It's rarely better than what any good cooler comes with and never worth it. Iirc the still uses NT-H1 which performs about the same, but NT-H2 actually beats Grizzly Kryonaut. That means on new Noctua coolers that switch will actually make things worse. Good deal for 10$, isn't it?
5700 (XT) is a thing now.

EVGA P2 is on sale, see above.

What's the PCIe Ethernet card for? Do you need more than the one integrated on the mobo?

Also the mobo isn't that great. Mobo + external wifi is usually cheaper. VRMs are good enough for a 6 core if you're not going to do anything crazy, but you can get the same for 100$ with a B450 mobo if you're willing to deal with the BIOS update and lack of PCIe 4.0.

#3375
Well they never compared with the overclocked 3600X.
There's 2 reasonable choices: Either you go all the way and pay 90$ (or less tbh) for a cooler, 200$ (or less) for X570 mobo and buy the 3600X to oc hard or you're fine with 10% less performance and ditch both. 3600 with a 90$ cooler would be neither here nor there.
That's also where that review breaks down. If you use the same overkill cooler on both SKUs, which are the same chip then performance is going to be rather similar. If you compare them stock vs stock it's a bigger difference because those 50$ also include a better cooler. It's obviously market segmentation and price-performance ratio is still worse for the 3600X, but that's normal.
But going "see, if I put a 140$ aio on the 3600 it performs almost as well as the 3600X" is retarded.

But going "see, if I put a 140$ aio on the 3600 it performs almost as well as the 3600X" is retarded.

building a PC for my roomate,

1800-2k CAD budget, no mail-in rebate, no vuuvo
usage is gaming
no overclocking

here's what I got so far, but feel free to make w/e build
https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/j6ncdX

no idea about mobo. might have to swap in a x570 atx mobo and a fullsize case?

Nothing wrong with µATX B450/X470. Maybe one with slightly better VRMs?
https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/dQgzK8/asrock-b450m-pro4-micro-atx-am4-motherboard-b450m-pro4

Also the 5700 XT exists.
Looks fine other than that.

kay ill get that mobo

still considering 5700 xt its like 80cad cheaper or so but shitty blower cooler and I guess it has some minor crashing + no rtx (which doesn't matter, but maybe a little when cyberpunk 2077 comes out?) so I'm not sure

What minor crashing?
Aftermarket coolers are coming in August afaik.

RTX is like Gameworks for raytracing, mostly software and a handful of hardware instructions. Performance impact on GTX is like 1.5x the impact on RTX, so it's not all that much. It'll probably end up like Hairworks again, where the default, highest settings murder any GPU anyway and the reasonable, playable settings run reasonably well on AMD too.

Maybe consider an Intel 660p 1tb m.2 instead of the Samsung, use the extra 140 or so to grab a good sized HDD for his games and porn music, and I'd grab a cheap rx470/570/480/580 until aftermarket 5700XTs come out. I'd personally avoid the RTX cards as the ray tracing hardware on those cards is bound to be insufficient for most ray traced games in future anyhow, so the premium being paid isn't worth it.

radeon image sharpening was causing crashes but I guess its fixed now? just the old drivers. unfortunately can't wait for the aib cards when expected date is like aug 20th.

he said he doesn't need a lot of hdd space, maybe that m2 wouldve been nice to save money. not a bad idea with getting a temp card but hes not really the patient type to say the least.

and yea what you guys said about RTX is fair enough, seems quite worthless. when quake 2 with RTX can't even get a good frame rate Lol.

anyways he's bought it, not sure what video card he got I left it up to him, rest is the same except the mobo that was recommended and I found a better psu.

Better than a G2?

It's a good build either way, the SSD and GPU would've been minor optimizations but nothing game-changing.

what up, im building a pc and ran into a compatibility issue i don't understand on pcpartpicker. i want to use an nvme drive because apparently they're super fast but the website throws an error saying something about disabling pcie/sata slots. what does this even mean/do i even need to care about this?

Basically means that when you have the NVMe drive in two of the 6 SATA ports are gonna be disabled, so if you have loads of hard drives you'll need to rethink your storage.

I am in the market for a CPU upgrade and I'm looking to purchase intel because I'd rather not replace everything. I mostly want to be able to stream tf2 @ 720p 60fps, and be able to play other fps games at high frames.

https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-H110M-A-rev-10#ov

this is my motherboard and I have been using an i3-6100 for about 3 years this fall.

looking for anything under 300 CAD, not trying to spend too much otherwise I'd just build an AMD computer.

Honestly it's not worth it unless you go for a used CPU.
The best CPU you can just about not afford is an i5-7600 for 310 CAD and that's not going to be better for streaming than a 1600/2600 (170/190 CAD) + a mobo which you actually can afford. At that point you might as do it properly, put an extra 70$ towards a 3600 so you get good TF2 performance when not streaming, maybe a nice motherboard and you can still replace the RAM later if money is tight.

240 Hz doesn't do anything when you couldn't hit the broad side of a barn even in slow motion.
CS is a shit game and you know it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npatK6xl0Lo
It's so boring you'll fall asleep for a year after playing it once.

but I quite like cs :-(
I just dont get to play it often because the matches are long and I usually only get free time in short (compared to cs matcues) bursts
tbh the only reason I'm attracted to that monitor is because Im currently stuck on 48hz (send help) and I have a huge go big or go home vibe. I'll probably settle for 144 though, still a massive improvement

Redirect the masochism required for liking CS into liking 48 Hz?

I mean it's not that expensive, but since the 240 Hz would be pointless you should either go for something much cheaper or something cheaper with better colours.
