http://store.steampowered.com/stats/
there was likely a mass of bots turned off resulting in the steam stats now showing 'realistic' player numbers. its a bit early to tell how many there actually were but today's peak was only 35k. this places tf2 at steam's 11th most played game atm

edit: i think this confirms slin's video from a year ago

you have to consider that when its closer to the time where the majority of Australians are playing most of Europe and NA are asleep and they obviously will add more to that number because they have much bigger populations!

We know for a while that those numbers were inflated... And imo, this latest update being a major flop (in my books) didn't help TF2's case. Sure, we got a lot of fixes, but given that it took more than a year for a major update to hit, this was no gift to the player base. And while a lot of requested bug fixes were put to the side, we got a lot of unrequested "improvements".

Until Valve gets off their pedestal and starts being less restrictive about a lot of things* and letting we only play the version of the game they want us to play, things will just go downhill (sure, it's their product, but it's been on our hands for many years, and a lot of popular features have been stripped over the years).

* I.e. mods, sprays, quickplay, community servers etc. A few changes had some reasoning behind it, but didn't warrant being stripped/blocked. Just improve on it. For example, TF2, just like TFC and HL, have some default sprays. So Valve let us customize them. Then the porn/furry sprays started to appear. So no more sprays on Valve servers. Overwatch has official sprays, and they're really high quality, like everything else. So, in typical Valve fashion, more stuff for them to pour into cases and get their $$. And hire a bigger dev team (as if money was the issue).

I don't see the point in talking about how to improve this game, because everytime we do 99.9% of it never reaches valve and the .01% of it ends up make this game less fun for everyone. Pyro is actual rat aids to play against now, and its breaking this game on all levels of play. Paid sprays are also rat aids, and I feel like the dev team is full of people who don't even play this game even on a casual level anymore. This game is exhausting, and I don't want to be negitive but I just don't see any way to fix the terminal cancer that has infected it. FeelsBadMan.

I've read that a massive bot farm may have been removed/closed/turned off. Someone on reddit linked this: https://teamwork.tf/community/statistics At the time of this post there's over 4,000 detected bots playing TF2 right now.

Man can we just relax and enjoy the game and not worry about "concurrent players"

This game has made it longer than it was supposed to, let's just chill and play it while it's here

This isn't going to last forever (sadly) ((but I hope it does with all my heart)) and instead of worrying about shit like this we should just enjoy this amazing game that brought thousands of people together

Saying "lol game dead" isn't helpful btw

Off topic a little, it's been a while since I've looked at the steam stats and I remember dota with 600 or 800k or whatever being a lot, how in the hell does PUBG have 2.5 million people playing

pay to use valve approved sprays with a limit on how many times u can use it
not sure if it's like that in tf2 because I don't really do that stuff but cs has it.

afaik there aren't paid sprays in tf2, you basically spray anything, for better or for worse.

unlike dota 2 pubg is distributed through steam in china so you actually see all of asias playerbase reflected in the numbers

perfect world controls dota servers/distribution in china so the number u see is everybody but china

i think fortnite recently surpassed pubg's record of concurrent players and the game's not even playable in china yet

although nothing beats league of legends for daily players

It's pretty obvious that this isn't an actual drop in real players. This is idlebots being shut down (hopefully by Valve).

This isn't the way things work. Half of a game's concurrent playerbase doesn't just decide to quit one day (especially considering there weren't any major changes that spurred this).

Yeah you're right Fortnite did pass out pubg already, hitting about hitting some crazy 2.5 million person or something like that. Well tbh for TF2 now I really dont know what to say, 30k concurrent person is still alot in terms of now a days standards so I guess we will just have to see how things play out later on.

I'm gonna keep on playing 'till the very end and as they say anyway all good things must come to an end, so when tf2 officially reaches that "end" am certain that some kind soul will make do what TF2 Vintage did and have a playable branch of the game of its last release.

Relevant Steamcharts stats

https://i.imgur.com/y1YVGws.png

Rocket League released an update
Warframe released an update
The Witcher 3 is on sale
Rust released an update
Civ VI released an update

Those upward player numbers have to come from somewhere. Sorry TF2. There are probably only bots left playing the game.
