It's not gone just like that, the decision still has to go through the courts. Net neutrality is still far from being repealed.

There is also a bill planned to be introduced into Congress to stop it. Congress has 60 days for congressional review. Contact your representatives and tell them to vote against the repeal. Remember these guys want to get re-elected with mid-terms in 2018; don't just think your call or letter will be ignored.

that bill is written by ISPs and will include many loopholes and will strip the FCC of its regulatory power once and for all

Not saying I agree with it but the theory behind it is that the 300 million vote for the president who appoints members to the FCC to execute law passed by Congress who are elected by 300 million people..

More like Verizon and Comcast tell them what to do because this thing called money exists and it speaks a whole lot louder than 300 million people. Shame on the greedy fucks at Verizon and Comcast.

KEVCHEVthe internet belongs to the free markets not the gov

That free market was carefully carved, divided and swapped by the US telco's to create local monopolies back in the "summer of love".

Services that compete with products from your ISP will be blocked or throttled. This is not hyperbole, it has already happened wherever there are no strong net-neutrality laws, including the US as recently as 2013.

the real problem here is that the entire thing was apparently decided by an unelected oligarchy, and not by either direct vote or a vote by elected officials

reakothe real problem here is that the entire thing was apparently decided by an unelected oligarchy, and not by either direct vote or a vote by elected officials

it still has to go through courts + congress
it likely won't go through congress considering almost 85% of the american populace is against it, and if the elected officials want to get reelected for the next terms they'd likely vote for what the people want

socialists all think if we allow the free markets to prevail shits going to be the end of days

Removing Title II means there's damn near no consumer protections or how businesses interact.

Let's take a current Example that's true for a shit ton of Americans.

John Doe pays for upto™ 50Mb x 5Mb from ShittyISP but only ever gets 40 x 4 at any point during the day or night and during peak hours gets 10Mb x 2Mb. Even when plugging directly into ShittyISPs modem and closing all back ground programs this still occurs. John calls ShittyISPs helpdesk and is told "It's your router" or "It says upto™ and you're getting fairly close most of the time" and it deadends there. John can't switch ISPs cause either A there is not other ISP or B the other ISP is via Satellite and causes excessive latency and packetloss. [1] ShittyISP has no reason to improve their service cause no one can force them too and they're making plenty of money as it is. At this point John's only hope for improved service is either A. Government Regulation and forcing ShittyISP to provide better service or B. Hope that MediocreISP comes to town despite there being no money in doing so.

Now ShittyISP currently can also institute Data Caps to help mitigate the issue without actually improving the service, and they'll tell you "Don't worry less than 1% of our users actually reach that" or "99% of users don't reach that" [2] Which basically means that this isn't the actual source of the issue, and they just want more money. Now with the removal of Title II ShittyISP can start charging more for access to particular websites/services either to the Consumer or Business without actually improving the service and making more money which is a win win for them but a super shit deal for everyone else including businesses and the overall market in general. [3] [4] .

Also the absolute worst thing about the Data Caps is they don't actually have to be updated on a regular basis cause even though only 1% or less users reach that now as more content becomes available and the advent of IoT and 4K high framerate video that means in as little as a few years that a much larger number of users will be hitting that Data Cap. And I'm going to reiterate there is nearly 0 reason for an ISP to actually want to improve the service if they don't absolutely have to. Oh and BTW the first refrence I have is super generous interms of number of ISP providers people have access to cause it includes satellite providers rofl.
