My philosophy has always been, sports-esque rudeness and vitriol towards the enemy is good, but keep the chat with your teammates super positive. Die for your team. And if you think about the big picture, its us TF2 fans vs. the world so we need to treat each other like we're on the same team when we're not in-game.

Spawn rips out from the dark, the trash cans in the forums, they shuffle, partially filled. Shit posts laying over each other. Layered filth showing new depth. Tragic, nothing original. Twitch rises to the clink of the sink downstairs to see a screen blinking promise, the idea that a man should be behind bars, containment. What evil could the will of everyone around him be working with.

“Lack of context on a forum, with no detail, would you explain?”

Twitch swallows his dry spit, dehydrated in the mists of a fast.

I think the hatefulness stems from a bunch of stuff. People are pessimistic about how comp tf2 is going at this rate, at least at the high level with the scene being unstable there in terms of teams. To me there’s also the rise of the “eSports mentality.” I’ve seen people just treat others so awfully in matches/scrims/pugs like they’re getting paid some high salary or something when in the end they’re getting that Wendy’s check lol. There’s also just bitter people out there, probably haven’t won anything in their lives so they take it out on this game as well as the players. So in short, it’s not surprising, nor will I see it changing soon, but it’d be cool to see more positivity in the scene from its players.

I think that if u sign up to play anything competitive ull be expected to try ur best to win by your peers, especially if ure on a team, which the whole purpose of being in one is to compete. Now u can have ur opinion that “its not that serious” but if ure carrying that with u in a competitive setting where others are trying to improve then ure doing a huge disservice to the other 5 people in ur team by wasting their time which is what is actually evil. if u dont wanna compete then go play casual, no one will make u better or yell at u there.

i feel like theres a big difference between being expected to try your best and being expected to be rlly good though, like if you're competing for significant tournament money it might be fair to hold being bad at the game against ur teammate but in tf2 theres less reason to have that high of standards

why shouldnt people have high standards, why should people be allowed to throw in pugs and ruin the whole experience, why should anyone let u on their team if ur goal is not to win or get significantly better, why should anyone want to compete with u if ure any of the above even if the money isnt that much. I think the “eSports mentality” is a good thing just like everything else that makes you a better you is a good thing. Not wanting to win and get better just means that ure happy with a worse version of yourself and that is not acceptable. If ure a new player u get a pass but everyone else with seasons of experience should take a good look at themselves and tighten up.

as somebody who highly values this principle of thinking myself, i do agree with the essence of what you're trying to say but not every aspect of your life has to be optimized or constantly improved. some activities are simply meant for leisure, socialization, or just general community and camaraderie.

there's also an element to reading the room as far as pugs are concerned. if not everybody in the pug is feeling like putting 100% gas in, it's more of a social faux pas on you to be upset that they don't wanna tryhard when you're in the minority.

i spend a lot of time reviewing my own vods and constantly working on improving in league of legends because its something i'm passionate about and generally 90% of the teammates i get in ranked are similarly invested in winning the game (maybe not so much the improvement process, but winning at the very least)

but in pugs, many people are not playing for that experience. they're simply trying to enjoy the format of tf2 that's the most fun for them because pugs are the only realistic avenue to enjoy it at a regular interval

I've always found it funny how the meanest people in tf2 are always in some sort of self formed highschool type clique so they can collectively bully people. It's always funny that these same people get super offended if you hit them with the same type of shit talk they try on others and then they get all defencive and start saying you are toxic.

Honestly as someone that has been super toxic in-game, it almost always stems from just being mad at myself for playing bad and not the other person I'm projecting this on to. This is however not an excuse to make passive agressive remarks at new people that aren't your friends and don't know you or anyone else honestly unless it's just banter. I still do it sometimes and I have to like take a step back and try and recompose myself and even apologize which most younger players cannot fathom because of the highschool mentality of competitiveness that I mentioned.

Also try out any real life team sport and see how people communicate on a team. Its much different and it really kinda reflects how communicatively stunted you can be and still function and thrive in online games. This games former #1 player is an excellent reflection of this lesson
