That's how some people are paid as opposed to whatever business just actually paying minimum wage. They're only required to make up whatever difference is left after tipping so that people are paid the bare minimum.

I think many people in the US grow up with the idea that if you can't afford to tip, don't go out to eat. I work in a restaurant in a nice part of town, base wage is $13.50 an hour, but tips put me at 30 - 75+ p/hour, tips make me more money than base pay by a lot. Tips are essential to my income as a full time college student, part time restaurant employee. Tips are very important

tipping is customary cause jobs that rely on tipping dont pay enough to live on (unlike in europe iirc) and so its really important for peoples livelyhoods

paskowhy doesnt the owner just pay them more, he must be loling hard at other people paying his staff

because if he paid them more then he would make less, and profit is king

thats cool but in reality a lot of american restaurant chains have huge profits and definately could afford to pay their waiters more, the reason they don't is because they don't have to. there's no (good enough) collective bargaining or minimum wage.

american chain restaurants are actually in a race to the bottom for pricing, that's why they all have ads for 2 for $20, unlimited xyz, or something similar. each individual location, percentage wise, is usually not making "huge" profits.

also, the vast majority of tipped employees would be against removing tipping because no restaurant is going to pay 50/hr+ to anywhere from 1-10+ servers on a shift, which is relatively easy to make if you're in a decent spot.

if anything, pity the cooks. minimum wage or barely above, longer hours, more physically demanding work, and surface of the sun temps in the kitchen.

tsarTipping is a good thing. There's a societally acceptable range of tipping depending on the area and type of restaurant. This allows the customer the ability to greater reward good service with a larger tip, and it creates incentives for the waiter to provide better service. Arguments about how the waiter should just be paid more are moot because the food would just be more expensive. You'd pay the same amount over time, either way. Tipping culture creates better service and a pay structure that rewards waiters being good at their jobs.

edit: Thank you all for downvoting instead of posting why you disagree!

You're actually right, I waited tables for 2 years before college and made so much more money than any hourly job I ever had cause I was incentivized to care (my mother has waited tables for 36 years and makes more money than most college grads I know). If you make a bad wage waiting tables you're either a shit waiter or at a dying restaurant.
