fizzwhizWhy does it strictly require that a valid TF2 game folder be given? What if one just wants to generate a VPK for any reason?

Again, the app isn't generating a VPK. You can download the same VPK it uses from the releases. The app is just there to help you customize the modules for your TF2.

fizzwhizWhy is the program larger than 150 MB? Does it need to be this way?
Looking at the source code, it seems like the app is built with web technologies. Is this why yarn and npm are required?

Again, this app and the way it was made (Electron) both suit its purpose and will make even more sense long term. Also, though minor, the compression on the app can be increased to reduce the size a bit more.

fizzwhizWhy does the program require installation?

The program stores user data, so it would defeat the purpose of it being portable. I could write extra code to allow it to be more portable than just being a portable executable, but there are other priorities right now.

fizzwhizSure, but there seems to be only a single mastercomfig.vpk in the latest releases. It seems like all the presets are defined in a JSON file now? Are addons supported without using the app?

Presets are in the presets folder in the VPK and are controlled by the preset_ commands. Addons were not implemented in 6.8.0 and have not reached 7.0.0 yet.

fizzwhizThis does not address the point about the flashy UI. A friendly UI doesn't require design frills (unless it's only CSS in this case). And yes, I do appreciate the conveniences of the app and can see how it will greatly reduce tedious work on your part; I just take issue with the fact that the whole program is unnecessarily huge which I presume is due to the usage of custom fonts and probably runtimes for the app.

So what is your issue? The size? Or the UI? I just think these things you mention about size are definitely worth it if you consider it to be a tradeoff between ease of use and size.

fizzwhizNot a request, but what if this VPK generator were a web app instead which could be hosted online and be downloadable for offline use at the same time? What could be alternatives to the Python scripts?

Again, it doesn't generate a VPK, and it would be too complicated and very limited if it were implemented as a web app. I'm not sure why you want an alternative to the Python scripts, they're for developers only to generate config files for users for each release.

fizzwhizWill 6.8.0 be getting a final release?

No

fizzwhizwhat do the JSON files do?

Depends on what JSON file you mean, but they generally just describe the config data for use in generation by developers and for the UI.

Using version 7 and now my playermodels, shutterdoors, engineer buildings, and possibly other things are all very dark and it's hard to tell what color they are esp. at distance. What command(s) effect this?

On this latest release page, you're mentioning changes to the Speedtest info, so one would guess you still advocate the use of the upload rate generator, but on the 6.8.0b2 release page, we were told to ignore its formula and use 75k:1 as rate and 50k:1 as net_splitpacket_maxrate. What's the current instructions, cap'n?

Thanks for the updates! Again and again.

Same as b2, but you don't need to worry about it, as the app automatically sets that for you according to the speed it measures using speedtest.net.

How do I change the detail fade in distance? I'd like to either turn it off completely or make it always visible, as I find it disorienting to see it change when I'm in a fight. Running latest ver w/ medium preset.

Hi, no soundscapes and no footsteps are coming soon!

No decals was never an addon, you can change them in the modules, under the graphics category.

Hi, love what you're doing.

A question though about customization. I'm looking through the config for commands I can uncomment, but many times I find myself unsure what the explanation means. For example:

//cl_pred_optimize 2 // Reuse prediction data in case 1, as well as if the
// the server said our prediction data was within
// reasonable limits of its own data (case 2)

Would this be better than being set to 1 for bad internet? Another example:

//cl_smooth 0 // Skip view smoothing operation

Is view smoothing an extra feature or would disabling it make the game uglier but improve fps?

In these cases, apart from Googling to find often ambiguous results, what options do I have on deciding between options? Thanks.

Edit: Nevermind, comparing recommend options between low and high presets shows which commands are better for squeezing fps. Still doesn't always say whether or not they may provide a gameplay disadvantage, though.

Whenever you implement no footsteps, I'd recommend letting people know they might not want to use it if they play a format where Spy is prevalent, as you can hear Spy's footsteps while cloaked and in periods of downtime it is really easy to pinpoint them that way.

Loving the simpler exe setup btw. :)

mattystopperanyone who installed this can they help me, i don't know what to include in custom folder

add me pls

theres so much unexplained shit in the installation its impossible

I think according to what you've said, that you're at the second step from here.
Choose the configuration that you want, and place them all in your custom Team Fortress 2 folder. As simple as that! (And it will be even easier once the 7th version finally sort out of his pre-release state)

mastercomsNo decals was never an addon, you can change them in the modules, under the graphics category.

Sorry, I meant no extra models. But gotcha.

Is there a reason mat_aaquality is 0 across the board, except when using mat_antialias 8? On the .vpk, the aliases goes as FXAA Off, FXAA High, MSAA 2x, MSAA 4x, MSAA 8x and MSAA 16x, but on the source code, there are aliases for MSAA 6x, MSAA 8x CSAA, MSAA 16x CSAA and MSAA 16xQ CSAA.

Apologies for the minor picking, but I found MSAA 4x to be the sweet spot for me, but the alias sets mat_aaquality to 0 and the textures don't look smooth at all imo. 2 is the minimum I'd want, and I could forcibly set to it on the custom.cfg, but I wonder if there's a reason that the minimum of mat_antialias 8 is required for 2 to be optimal or something.

My choice would be aa_msaa_8x_csaa, but I can't pick that through the dropdown.

I think it would be nice to attach a few (thumbnail-ish) images below the options, at least on the Graphics section, to help illustrate what each one accomplishes. It was quite common and of huge assistance when I was installing some major mod for Fallout or Skyrim to see the difference on the fly. Obviously some options work alongside others, but it would help to streamline what they do, and which values would be the most suitable for each one.

Oh, and if I select a preset and mess around fine-tuning each option, I can't revert to the preset's original values. If I select some other preset and go back to it, it remembers my previous changes. Unless I click on Clear Settings, but that clears all the settings. Not very practical...

No extra models is included in the config but will be an option later.

Make sure you're looking at the source code for the beta branch. MSAA is preferred over CSAA, so any AA level that can be accomplished by MSAA will be used instead of CSAA. The only thing you can't achieve is 16x MSAA so for that CSAA is used at 2x with 8x MSAA. If you prefer the look of CSAA, the custom options coming soon should help you set the values you prefer.

More information to help you choose a module level, inckuding visuals, is coming eventually.

I can add a button to reset module level choices.

For some reason when I change classes, my game freezes and sometimes crashes entirely. This happened after I added the _c to all my class cfgs. I get the 66.85.14.250:27015:send reliable stream overflow error in console when this happens as well.
