An apologetic and accepting tone, and one that only took getting punished nine separate times by the game’s governing body to elicit.

So the kid was warned 8 times previously that he needs to stop yet he chose not to. I don't see why you consider this the end of esports as we know it.

botmodeseriously if this was applied to sports like baseball and football, there wouldn't be any players.

I've never once seen a professional sports player calling anybody "trash", "shit", etc. without it becoming a major PR disaster.

If you can't enjoy playing a game without trashing on everybody who might be worse than you, that's pretty sad to be honest. Nobody wants to play a game against someone constantly spewing poop from their mouths, and especially at the top level, where you're meant to be a respected role model for newer players to follow.

and when it happens in professional sports, those players get suspended and docked paychecks for several games. they don't get banned for a year.

stephano said he had sex with a 14 year old girl and Evil Geniuses took swift, immediate, and fair action against him by suspending him without pay for a month of competitions.

riot just banned a dude from playing their game for a calendar year. there's obviously a need and a desire to have people live up to a certain ideal of behavior but you let me know when you see someone in a legitimate sport or esport get a one year ban for on-the-field shittalk.

Holy shit you guys take shit-talking way too seriously.

You must get a nervous breakdown when someone uses binds in a scrim.

Riot pays for the top teams to compete. Not sure if they were paying for this kid, but they clearly want to disincentivize childish and overly negative behavior. They'd rather have their game represented like Starcraft, where the vast majority of players refuse to talk trash.

Top esports players with no filter for their mouths will see consequences of that. You can't walk into your classroom or office and start verbally shitting on someone nearby without consequences. Same goes for esports. Consequences in this arena can include revocation of (or disqualification for) sponsorships and other monetary incentives to play the game.

Edit: He wasn't banned for one instance of shit-talking. RTFA. He was banned after brazenly ignoring 9 attempted disciplinary actions.

Depends on the people, if I've played with someone for a while im gonna give them some (friendly) banter.
I wouldent join an MGE server and spam a shittalk script but I'll poke around with him if i know him.

Not sure I agree with the idea of never shit-talking. Personal insults are one thing, but shit-talking is as apt in e-sports as it is in a basketball game. Whether it's for the publicity or for your own mindgames against your opponents, it's something that shouldn't be taken too seriously unless it gets out of control. If I'm watching a game, the moment someone starts trash talking another player on the opposing team, I'm interested. It's that kind of e-drama that draws in and keeps a lot of spectators, I think. Obviously, there's a huge difference between that and a slew of personal insults that make up the entirety of the match. But, if I'm watching a Euro game between two English teams and they say "Cheerio!" or "Splendid shot!" every time something happens it gets pretty old pretty fast.

This I disagree with, considering an office setting and an e-sports match are different in the same way an office setting is different from a basketball game. It's how sports are for a lot of people and spectators like it. Basketball shit-talk? Awesome. I love seeing words fly between two players. Sort of informally acquaints me with each player. To each his own I suppose.

edit: cleaned up redundant wording

From what I understand, he did a little more than just shit talk. if he was in the top 0.7% of the most offensive people in the game I'm pretty sure it was a bit more than just shit talk.

Shit talking is one thing doing it in the wide open public is another thing. Anyone who's been to "LANs" for LoL can tell you shit talking is prevalent. I haven't been to a LoL "LAN" in like a year and a half atleast, and I've never met this guy personally but i can tell you that they do trash talk A LOT. However on stream is a completely different story, it's literally a job for some of the players, Hotshotz GG, back in the day wasn't on nearly the best team, and they didn't win a ton of cash prizes, yet he still made a living basically completely off of streaming. The players are very professional about streaming, if they're going to trash talk, they'll mute their stream, or they'll do it behind closed doors.

I don't know the full story behind this guy but apparently he was trash talking on a stream, and he was trash talking and using offensive language(using "gay" as an insult when 8k-20k people are watching is bound to offend someone.) or some junk, which if that really is the case. Of course they're going to get him out of the public eye.

It's not just because this guy was shittalking in pro games. It seems like he was just generally an abrasive player to play with (solo-queue, pubs, etc.) It might be a really harsh punishment, but it really does mean something to be banned 9 times and to be ranked number one on harassment score for all pro players. There aren't admins for servers like TF2, so Riot has to punish him somehow if he's making games a negative experience for so many players.

There are definitely rules to prevent players from trash talking out of line in all sports (aka unsportsmanlike conduct). In the NBA, they have technical fouls and fines that can lead to bans from playing. I personally love seeing shit talk fly between players, but there are times where it can get out of hand and I think this guy was just one of the extreme cases.

Clock, in most cases I agree with you. This kid sounds like someone who was completely insufferable and was warned an astonishing number of times about it because it was clearly hurting Riot's brand.

it must of been pretty out of control if they felt the need to ban him for a year, while it sounds really severe i could imagine he took it to another level and just didn't know when to stop. to a point where he just got underneath everyone's skin and just wasn't pleasant to be around at all. i really don't know whats been said by him personally maybe someone can dig that up if you really wanna argue both sides of it.

shit talking is in good fun, yeah in tf2, cs etc people spam binds and fuck around quite a bit but its never taken extremely serious to the point where it would justify a pretty long ban. but what did this guy say that was so bad to other high level teams? maybe they just didn't like him flat out and reported him over and over till something happened. who knows

Riot treats both casual and competitive players as if they're children attending an elementary school. Literally Riot is a bunch of pussies who do play favourites and there are other competitive players that do in fact play like this and don't get banned because their big names. Iwilldominate was not a big enough name compared to say TSM or CLG members who's streams get 10,000+ viewers therefore they're generally now banned as they are the face of League of Legends as Iwilldominate wasn't even remotely close therefore they made an example of him. And what Clockwork said shit talking is part of both eSports and professional sports as it makes the sport exciting all season long. And to top it all practically 85% (good estimation) or more of LoL players in ranked games shit talk.

There's a difference between saying "l8r nerds" and the stuff this guy was saying. Also considering how many people watch LoL streams I'm sure Riot was very embarrassed by this.

the big difference is in the NBA you can whisper some fucked up shit in someones ear and no one but that guy will hear it...cant exactly do that in an online video game.

if whatever he was saying was strictly related to LoL and a person's skill in that game...shouldnt have been banned. if he starts telling people to kill themselves and other fucked up shit then sure, ban em.

also, WHAT WAS ESPORTS COME TO

There's also a distinction in the kind of shittalking this guy was doing. He was trashing people on his own team for not playing up to his standards in ranked solo Qs, not like what harbleu does, calling people nlggers and faggots. Riot didn't ban him for trashtalking other people, but for not cooperating with his own teammates during ranked games, and gave him 9 times to correct it obviously

synchroI've never once seen a professional sports player calling anybody "trash", "shit", etc. without it becoming a major PR disaster.

pro sports is a bad analogy because

1) pro athletes do talk shit to each other on the field on a regular basis, most of it worse than calling someone "trash"
2) spectators can't hear 99.9% of it

the only time I've seen a major PR disaster over shit talk in pro sports is when someone crosses a major PR boundary (racism, that time someone was shit talking someone's dead sister or something) and the media actually gets wind of it
