This will be the start of opening community based servers for TF.tv. As we get a feel for demand and supply, we will venture out into more types and new locations as well as looking into further based systems to sustain and expand.

Please, for the love of god, don't put the server down if it goes 2 days without being populated. A lot of good servers like this go up, get populated for a few days, then no one plays for 2 days and it gets shut down then everyone starts wondering where the good servers went.

Nah, starting this, the only reason going small is to get the momentum started. As it gets going more then expansion will go. Regardless the server will be up for the next 10-12 months minimum unless there is some weird hardware issue or a fault at the DC. Then as things get going, implementing new systems like donations,having variations of 24/7 or rotations will come up.

One note is that as of now i have the server to do a self update and refresh at like 6am every few days to ensure it doesn't go stale and start having weird abnormalities happen aka glitches.

I like this idea. I'd say at 7 or fewer people, run SOAP. 4v4 is really the first point where it's fun to actually play the objective. SOAP gives people the ability to just screw around while waiting to populate the server.

If you set the settings to be more of a vanilla pub server you can get this server put into the matchmaking list. By putting it in the matchmaking list, random players will join this server and we can get more attention brought to tf.tv. I know that, us, as a competitive community don't like random crits but maybe it'd be better to use this as another tool to bring people to competitive TF2 or at least tf.tv?

I mean yeah, it's only a pub server but there will (always? usually?) be some competitive players in there to guide new pubbers to tf.tv and there is also motd and more server plugins that could be used to promote competitive TF2 (and tf.tv).

I didn't know that nocrits/nospread disqualified a server from being listed in QuickPlay. I'm editing the config now to make the server eligible.

Imo it's really stupid that not having random crits or spread keeps it out of the quickplay list. Valve should allow those servers to be eligible for quickplay and then have a checkbox or something if a player wants to include servers with nocrits and/or nospread in their search.

klare has some plugin on turbine it for turning off crits without removing it from quickplay (since it just checks the server's tags)

A smart idea but I'm not really too worried about it. IMO part of the fun of pubbing is how ridiculous it is, and crits can add to that.

Yeah my plugin is pretty wacky though... I use it to modify the respawn time and remove random crits. It kind of has a mind of its own though - items that should crit dont... the cap crits dont actually crit but you glow like you should be critting... etc.

But we are still in the quick join thing, which is absolutely amazing. 10 people on the server and it will instantly fill to 24. Too bad they hate servers that are different =(

Valve does NOT like when you do things like this. If you modify the sv_tags to get into quickplay, you run the risk of being delisted from the master server. That means that the only way to get traffic to your servers is via people connecting manually.

they're not talking about directly modifying sv_tags. they have the tf_weapon_criticals command set to 1 (enabled), but have a sourcemod plugin that detects and prevents crits from happening,

klanana the cap crits dont actually crit but you glow like you should be critting... etc.

and this is due to client side prediction.

Server is awesome, but could you maybe put a few more maps in the rotation. Badwater, gpit, and blands are really good, but a few other maps wouldn't hurt either.

Gully and upward are amazing in pubs. I don't think custom maps would be good because they remove the server from quick play.
