I'm really unfamiliar with headphone tech, but I'm tired of the HyperX Cloud IIs I've had for years and want something newer with great sound quality. (actual headphones rather than gaming headset)

Does anybody have any recommendations? Obviously something that's still good for games is a priority. As I said I know next to nothing about sound tech! Budget wise I don't mind, I'll decide that myself later :D

I bought the sony mdr7506 recently after my ath-m50 headband broke. The mdr7506 are comfy enough and sound is good, the ath-m50 were really good for idk how many years until now when i had to tape the headband. The audio is still fine though. I use them with a modmic and i'd recommend both.

Out of date. There are better alternatives to a lot of these now.

Audio equipment is very subjective and there are a ton of different headphones that fulfill different purposes. A headphones that is good for one person isn't necessarily the headphone that is good for you; it all depends on what your use case is. Questions like sound signature, isolation from external sounds, what you find comfortable, what you don't like about you're current headphones, sound source(whether you want to buy a dac and amplifier), and most importantly budget can change your decisions greatly. Also depends on how involved you plan on getting. Some people are fine with most headphones and don't care about the idiosyncrasies and getting to caught up with sound signature, frequency response and impedance just don't matter to them. If you want to make audio equipment a hobby or just find a better pair then you currently have can change someones recommendation. Asking yourself some basic questions about what you want can allow people to give significantly better recommendations.

bruh.

I got the Sennheiser HD 559 about 2 years ago now and have enjoyed them, they're about $100 and have a replaceable cable so if something breaks there you can replace it for pretty cheap. Modmic for a mic if you're not using an external one already

If he wants something for around $100 he should say he wants something for around a $100. When you are asking for suggestions on anything you should AT LEAST give a budget.

There's nothing wrong with the HyperX Cloud II, especially for the price. If they're not broken, consider keeping them.

If you want to upgrade, there's the Beyerdynamic MMX 300, about 240 EUR (straight from Beyerdynamic). It's basically a Beyerdynamic DT770, which is a proper hifi, closed, over-ear headphone, but coupled with a great microphone.
No RGB, no wireless, no bullshit features. If you don't need the microphone, the DT770 suggested by yak404 is absolutely wonderful and half the price (get the 32Ohms version).

Don't spend any money on DACs and AMPs, on-board audio is so good these days, you're better off just putting the money saved towards beter headphones or ice cream.

I've been told this before, and maybe my motherboard is just really unfortunate in the audio department, but I had constant static without a DAC. Look at reviews of your motherboard to make sure that's not a complaint people have

Yeah some motherboard have very poor circuitry, and some cases come with terrible front panel audio connectors. In those cases a cheap USB DAC can be an easy fix (or try the rear panel audio connectors instead).

Motherboard audio connectors are severely lacking in power for high impedance headphones.

Funs I just meant a *sensible* price

What is sensible to one person will not be sensible to another. I have Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pros @ $599 and many wouldnt consider those sensible but i do. Hell there are a lot of people who wouldnt consider my $150 Audio-Technica ATH-AD900s or $220 Sennheiser HD6XX reasonable. Reasonable is subjective.
Now if you are looking for headphones primarily for gaming in a quiet room at a "reasonable" price i would look at Audio-Technica ATH-AD900X or ATH-AD700X. They have superb imaging at their price point and are very easy to drive.

Just whatever you do don't get baited in by advertising and read lots of reviews..

One of my friends bought https://www.exeoent.com/psyko-headset at full price when they launched and they sounded unbelievably worse than my ATH M50's at the time.

I really like my DT770 Pros that I got at Christmas 2018, I got the 250ohm version and they're a solid pair of headphones. I've always used an external sound card so I don't know how well they sound straight from the mobo, but my current phone was able to drive them enough to a decent volume and they sounded just about as good as at home.

I've been looking around for an answer as to whether phones can drive the 250ohm ones for a while now, and this is the first thing I've read finally lmao
I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get the dt770s but now it's just choosing the impedance basically

I've had the HD 598 Cs from Sennheiser for like 6 months and they've been by far the best headphones I've used. They come with detachable cords so you can use either a DAC or a typical headphone jack. For me, they're worth the $250 though if you wanna go cheaper, I've had a couple friends say the HD 569/559 are really good too.
