Hello mastercoms,

I've been trying out your comfig settings (I've tried a few and thrown them into my autoexec, over actually using the entire config currently, though using any of your configs doesn't help too much) and while they have definitely helped by reducing stuttering times and even server load times, my framerate still appears to be inconsistent. I've tried settings and configs (all the way from the lowest, semi-low, low, default, high, very high, ultra and the while frames are different, they're only different when no battles occur.

No matter the config I use, I seem to get a consistent 30-40 FPS mid battle (can go up to around 120+ when nothing is happening and has been known to dip below 30 since Jungle Inferno) and changing resolution does nothing. Would you be able to suggest better settings for my system perhaps, since you're more knowledgeable about these things.

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M v2 (4 GB VRAM GDDR5; latest NVIDIA GPU Driver)
CPU: Intel Core i3-6100u @ 2.3 GHz
RAM: 8 GB GDDR3 (I think; definitely 8 GB though)
Monitor: Generic 1080p laptop screen
Custom Settings for TF: -novid (-high makes no difference, so it's been removed currently)
Custom Folder: Reduced Explosion Smoke & Custom Hitsound

I'll try to add more information if possible and required. I understand my laptop is not the greatest by any means, but I don't think 30-40 FPS is what I should be getting. I've even been getting this from the day I acquired the laptop, and "Windows Optimisations" make no difference either.

Thanks man.

What applications do you have in the background? Laptops come preinstalled with loads of bloatware programs, uninstall them and run superantispyware to make sure.
also looking into comfig.cfg you can change things yourself to optimize for your specific setup, for example change mat_queue_mode 2 to -1 since you have a dual core.
ALSO make sure the laptop is using your graphics card instead of intel graphics.

I typically make sure that most of/all of the bloatware programs installed by default are removed and I have done so with this laptop. Regarding background applications, Steam and Discord are the primary applications but even upon closing Discord framerate is no different. Other applications I attempt to close generally re-open or even if closed no framerate difference is observed.

In terms of mat_queue_mode, I've always left it at -1 as setting it to 1 or 0 decreases FPS. Setting it to 2 is the same as -1 for me. I have also forced TF to always use my NVIDIA GPU over the Intel Graphics Card ever since getting the laptop.

As I say, I've tried quite a fair few "tricks" and "tips" for optimal performance over the 4k hours I've played TF...I just cannot seem to get a good 60 FPS no matter what I do when I'm in mid-fight. I've gotten used to 30-40, but obviously 60 FPS is optimal on a 60 Hz display (VSync is disabled)

Are those all of your launch options? I would recommend using all of the launch options listed in the mastercomfig autoexec.cfg.

Lindonand "Windows Optimisations" make no difference either.

Do you also have the high performance power plan enabled?

As you say that decreasing graphical quality is not changing how much FPS you get in battles, I'm inclined to believe it is the stress the networking system is putting on your CPU.

Try these network settings and see how it affects your FPS.

Also, see how disabling the queued packet thread affects your FPS. Try these combinations:

  • net_queued_packet_thread 1
  • net_queued_packet_thread 1 and -NoQueuedPacketThread launch option
  • net_queued_packet_thread 0 and -NoQueuedPacketThread launch option

I'll give the launch options a go and report back to you when I can. In regards to the high performance power plan, I've tried it when it's disabled and when it's enabled, again there's not been a difference.

It could entirely be the networking system and I'll give those settings a little go and report back to you on that too. This may take a week or so, I'm busy.

Thanks

Is this the new go to config? I see people recommending it a lot and no longer see people talking about the other one. I read about 6-7 pages of this thread and saw people say that the other competing config had a lower variable in fps and a higher overall fps (only by a couple though).

Excited to give it an actual try! I tried using it the other day but it didn't seem like it made a difference, I must have installed it incorrectly or something, I really like how there is a lot more explanation for the commands too.

By competing config, do you mean Comanglia's config (forum thread, download link)?

I'm not exactly sure how this config exactly compares to Comanglia's, but I've seen reports of higher FPS with mine on some PCs, with some having higher FPS on Comanglia's, both cases having small FPS differences. What I think I've seen consistently though, is that people have said it makes the game smoother and decreases load times.

I'd be happy to help with your installation process. Could you tell me what you tried to do to install it?

Hello
I do have some questions, i hope you don't mind
I have a 10.70Mbps (A Stable 10.50) (As in Mega bits, so 1.4Mega bytes, i think) Download and 0.98 Mbps (Stable 0.80 ish) upload... Not ideal, but, what network settings would be the best in my condition?

Also i have a powerfull graphics card and a relatively weak CPU
(Nvidia GTX 950 2GB GPU
Intel® Xeon® E3-1280 Cache 8M 3.50 GHz [4 cores, 8 threads] CPU ) so what settings i turn on and witch one i turn off? Is there a preset that's best for me? I'm having my frames drop to 57, 60 in casual matches and stuttering issues

Thanks

Halve the config's rate and net_splitpacket_maxrate, and use net_maxcleartime 5.

I've been hearing about these issues, even from someone with a i7-6700K and GTX 1080 Ti, but apparently it only happens in casual servers and not in community. Could you try a community server and see if you still get stuttering issues?

Nope, in comu and local servers is fine(Still stutter a bit tho), and it only started after the last 2 updates, the Scream Fortress and Jungle Inferno
Before that it never went below 100
Also, thanks for the network config

You should use -dxlevel 81 for your first launch only. You should be using mat_dxlevel 81 forever, on first launch and beyond.

Hey, i tried the Dxlevel 81
My FPS issues are gone, it's back to not go below 100
and my demo benchmark went from avarage 110 went to avarage 143 fps
I have more fps variability but that's ok i guess
and it seems that having MSAA and Mat picmip at max and all that thing made no difference (about 0.73 fps in the demo)
(i still sutter every 10 sec or so but the game is playable at least)

Should interp always be an exact multiple of (1 / rate)? I remember reading (I think in Felik's config?) that 0.02 was a good value, which seems to contradict your and Comanglia's configs.

Also, is the tickrate in TF2 66 or 66.66...? (ie, is the minimum interp I should use 0.01515... or 0.015?) Again, I recall reading differing advice on this.

You can't set your interp lower than the lowest possible value, it get's automatically set to the lowest possible value for your current tickrate. https://i.imgur.com/CZ1tQak.png

The client will set it to interp_ratio/tickrate > 0.015152

Personally I've found that raising interp does very little other than delay projectiles, if other people have garbage computers/internet they're going to warp around and there's nothing you can do about it.

What is your OS? Do you have Game DVR turned off? What about window optimizations and game mode? HIgh performance power plan? What are your launch options?

I've found it very hard to debug this issue, as I don't get it on any of my PCs, on Windows or Linux, so any additional information is appreciated.

cl_interp should always be set to 0 (unless a community server is restricting cl_interp_ratio for whatever reason). Use cl_interp_ratio and cl_updaterate to control interp more precisely. (if cl_interp is set to 0, it will set to cl_interp_ratio / cl_updaterate). Your interp ratio should be set to the lowest packet interval where you don't have any packet drops. Most of the time this will be 1.

TF2's tickrate is 66. So, if you have cl_interp_ratio set to 1, and cl_updaterate set to the max of 66, you'll get a cl_interp of 0.01515151515.

//sys_minidumpspewlines 500 // Basically the number of lines saved to a log file from console. No FPS boost but 15% lower FPS variance
sys_minidumpspewlines 500 // You're setting it to the default value of 500. It doesn't affect FPS or FPS variance anyway, it does not become a factor in normal play as it only is used when TF2 crashes.

does this command matter at all? its for logs but you do say it affects FPS variance, could you expand on that? nvm silly me

I don't say it affects FPS or FPS variability. Comanglia wrote that first comment. My correction is the 2nd one.

What is your OS? Do you have Game DVR turned off? What about window optimizations and game mode? HIgh performance power plan? What are your launch options?

I've found it very hard to debug this issue, as I don't get it on any of my PCs, on Windows or Linux, so any additional information is appreciated.

My VGA goes to 60 ºC (140 ºF)

My CPU goes to about 73, 75 Cº (163,4 ºF)
Dunno if that has anything to do with anything, but info is info

Using Timer Tool to get 0.5 timer on windows

Using Razer Gamer Boost

Process Lasso to set to high priority and high I/O priority

MSI Afterburner to make my Video Card power limit go to 118

(I have a GTX 950 OC Edition and an Intel Xeon E3-1280 3,50 GHz 4 cores 8 threads as i said)

Windows 10 Pro (Creators Update) 64 bits, GAME DVR Turned off in Regedit and Xbox app, game mode turned on, High performance power plan and CPUs unparked

"-novid -nojoy -nosteamcontroller -noff -nohltv -softparticlesdefaultoff -reuse -primarysound -snoforceformat -swapcores"
Also i'm using SRC Repair to Clean my TF2 and reset video settings when needed for benchmark and change my DX level without resetting my tf2 over and over
You should use it, it makes everything much more convenient

It looks like they replace grass on the ground? So maybe try r_drawdetailprops 0 or 1. Also how did you get everyone's name on the casual bar? It looks cool! :)

SiiLVER

For the sake of testing, could you try running TF2 without those tweaks (timer tool, razer game boost, process lasso, msi afterburner, game mode, CPU unparking)? And try setting dxlevel manually and also trying -default.

No problem! I just love helping people :)

TF2 Resetted, default DX level, only "-default" on launch options, no CFG or anything on "Custom", Cpu on normal park options (So working at 80%), only the game and no other software to boost performance.

SiiLVER2639 frames 27.963 seconds 94.37 fps (10.60 ms/f) 5.649 fps variability

Now with Mastercfg 5.0.2, no launch options, Custom folder empty, Cpu on normal park options (80%), no software to boost performance (I did notice that on -Default the demo runs slower, as in, normal speed i guess and on the CFG it runs faster, like 1.5 times faster? i hope this doesn't mess with the benchmark)

SiiLVER2639 frames 20.847 seconds 126.59 fps ( 7.90 ms/f) 8.529 fps variability

Same as above, but with the launch options on the Readme file of the 5.0.2 zip (-novid -nojoy -nosteamcontroller -noff -nohltv -softparticlesdefaultoff -reuse -primarysound -snoforceformat -swapcores) (Still DX Level 95 (default) )

SiiLVER2639 frames 20.814 seconds 126.79 fps ( 7.89 ms/f) 8.375 fps variability

TF2, MasterCFG 5.0.2, Readme launch options, CPU unparked at 100%, Razer game booster on, CPU timer at 0.5, MSI Afterburner and Process Lasso (Game priority at high and I/o priority at high)

SiiLVER2639 frames 20.846 seconds 126.59 fps ( 7.90 ms/f) 9.114 fps variability

... Well now...

20 more fps with -dxlevel 81

SiiLVER2639 frames 18.725 seconds 140.93 fps ( 7.10 ms/f) 10.557 fps variability

Sorry i took so long to benchmark Dxlevel 81
I was busy the whole day
am tired
need sleep
