OPTIONAL TF2 update for 3/14/17

Via HLDS:

Valve- Internal updates to support future development

Rumor has it:

- John Schoenick shared this notice along with the above:

John Schoenick via HLDSThis update will be making the toolchain beta branch live. This update is known to break numerous server mods, many of which have updates available. In order to reduce the pain with this transition, the update is optional for servers. However, the next mandatory TF update will necessarily end support for the pre-toolchain-update builds, so server administrators should seek to update as soon as possible.

See the "Updated system requirements for TF2 dedicated servers" thread for more information on the toolchain update.

- John

- In case you care about low-level stuff, here it is, but for most people, it'll be boring and of no use. Also included is a sync of recent Steam Datagram system configuration changes that properly implement the Sydney data center IP range changes

- Size is ~30 MB

Rhettrowhat does this mean

for clients, nothing.

for servers, that they can get the update now to anticipate problems when the next mandatory update drops.

mbaWill this beta thing have any effect on performance?

John mentioned that although on paper it could result in slightly improved performance, don't expect anything drastic in the range of a miracle.

Can't join any servers now, says that they use different class tables. This includes Valve servers. Is this a glitch or do I have to wait for all servers to be updated?

I'm 90% sure that's caused by a server/client version mismatch. That said, I don't think an optional update should cause it? Or any issues, really.

If it isn't caused by the update, then what causes it? More importantly, what fixes it? I've tried verifying game files, and restarting steam and tf2

This update broke TF2 server for some types of Xeon processors. I run 2 machines with dual X5675 Xeons and on these TF2 crashes on startup with "Illegal instruction (core dumped)"
I've reported this problem on the hlds_linux mailing list, so now we have to wait for Valve to fix it.

All my servers with newer Xeons or i7's are fine.

FOUND A SOLUTION to the class tables shit

Go into TF2 properties from steam
Betas Tab
then change "Opt out of all beta programs" to "previous release"
the game updates
and then everything works
