bicycleforratseven though my AOTY was Chthe'ilist - Le Dernier Crepuscule

since everyone else is talking about more than 1 album i will too

EVERYTHING I LISTENED ENOUGH TO TALK ABOUT (IN ORDER)
1. Chthe'ilist - Le Dernier Crepuscule - very dark and murky death metal about things that take place inside the cthulhu mythos. has some of the greatest bass guitar in all of death metal in recent years and a very large finnish death metal influence (some go as far as to say it's Demilich worship, but i enjoy this way more than Demilich). this is my most played album from 2016. why does quebec have so much good metal... i will never know
2. Vektor - Terminal Redux - pretty much everything i expected from these guys and a little more. very detailed songwriting and fantastic openers and closers.
3. NAILS - You Will Never Be One Of Us - misanthropic metal/powerviolence that doubles as great background music for weightlifting
4. Blood Incantation - Starspawn - more good death metal with great drum production and a large US old school death metal influence
5. Vermin Womb - Decline - vocals actually blew me away. the dude sounds like a fucking monster. both entertaining and satisfying.
6. Anicon - Exegeses - this is the black metal album that stuck with me the most, i wouldnt think 2016 was too good of a year for black metal anyway

I don't make the effort to follow current music any more, but I have listened to two 2016 releases and they're both good:

  • Ritual Spirit by Massive Attack. Good collabs with Young Fathers and Roots Manuva, as well as a reunion with Tricky. The Roots Manuva track is probably the best one, some great 2 step.
  • Recto verso by Paradis. Now, this generally was a pretty big disappointment for me. I followed Paradis since 2014 and loved all the material they dropped before their debut album, including the lead single "Toi et moi", which is hands down the best track here. The album is still decent, but the troughs are longer than the peaks.

Also, Nine Inch Nails dropped a new EP yesterday and the lead single sounds AMAZING. It's pretty much Swans worship. Don't know how the rest of the EP holds up though, and I wouldn't hold my breath since their last two albums were pretty mediocre.

This year was pretty fucking great for thrash metal

  • Dystopia-Megadeth
  • Brotherhood of the Snake - Testament
  • Hardwired… to Self-Destruct - Metallica
  • For All Kings - Anthrax
  • World Gone Mad - Suicidal Tendencies

Honestly my favorite out of these has to be Dystopia. The inclusion of acoustic guitar is pretty cool, and I loved how some of the solos from classic songs were mixed into newer licks (a prime example of this can be seen in the track Post-American World at 3 Minutes 14 Seconds with one of the solo parts from Hangar 18 thrown in. Even without this touch, this album kicked all of the ass and I haven't been able to stop listening to it.
