Is it still worth getting into tf2?

Hey TFTV :D

I come from ow, After seeing numerous frag movies and watching the i49 doc, the game/scene really caught my interest, looks very skill based and fun.

Lots of people are telling me the game is dead competitively and that it would be pointless but I'm still looking to give it a go. The skill ceiling seems really high and I'm just anxious that by the time I'm actually semi-decent at the game, the scene would be already dead.

I'm mainly interested in the 6s format, the soldier/roamer role seems the most appealing to me, Ideally where would I start? how can I learn the ropes?

That's basically it, thanks in advance.

i think it's worth it, atm the best advice i can think of is go visit playcomp.tf where you can find pretty much all of the basic info you may need and also watch a prem game cast that is happening now at twitch.tv/teamfortresstv

The top of the scene isn't the strongest right now, but there still seems to be a ton of interest in competitive TF2. This past season was a huge surge of Open teams created from the newbie mixes posted above, and if we can cultivate that young blood the competitiveness of the higher divisions will increase as well!

It's still worth it to get into competitive TF2 for as long as ESEA keeps TF2 alive.

Newbie mixes gives you personalized instruction on how to play, but check out the http://playcomp.tf/ website for a bunch of different resources to help you get involved.

WELCOME!

Totally worth it! Once you get your feet underneath you in terms of mechanics (rocket jumping, air strafing, okay aim) and basic understanding of the 9 classes (less to learn here than overwatch, but a lot of depth you'll keep learning over time) you'll see how incredibly fun TF2 is, especially in a competitive setting. Competitive TF2 will be around for years even if the top of the scene doesn't grow, so you have plenty of time to become great and it'll be a blast.

Have fun :D

Thanks for all the help already, that was pretty fast haha.

I've just joined the newbie mixes group I'll make sure to participate in those as soon as I get the chance to, Just read playcomp.tf aswell so thank you for that, Now I know a bit more.

Also I know there is a lot of customization/preference when it comes to the game, is there some kind of competitive/optimal must have cfg?

I've seen some clips without the weapon model in the game is that an option ig? cannot seem to find it, game looks really clean on some fragmovies I've seen so I'm sure it's part of some config aswell.

No. 1 thing you should do : fov_desired 90

you can turn off viewmodels and do a lot of other helpful things in the advanced options, like damage numbers, hitsounds/killsounds, etc.
(theres also commands to change these and more)

I would also recommend changing your hud and the default hit numbers are small and red and are very hard to see.

this is a good place to get your cfg : http://www.teamfortress.tv/25328/comanglia-s-config-fps-guide

http://www.teamfortress.tv/25328/comanglia-s-config-fps-guide here is a good fps guide(use if your getting low fps)(Basically copy and paste the config in your autoexec: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1439674, which you might need to make one,fyi playing on dx8 is about performance, so you wont see skins if you care about that)(also to bring up net graph to see your fps and actual ping is net_graph 1 and 0 to disable it)
http://www.teamfortress.tv/33738/ive-updated-some-huds (here is some good huds)(my favorite is brosel hud)
http://hit.tf/ (good website for hitsounds) (how to install hitsounds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zph87YlIUrs)\

i have this in my autoexec as well to bind net graph to tab:
//Scoreboard
alias +scores "net_graph 3; +showscores"
alias -scores "net_graph 0; -showscores"
bind tab +scores

p.s newbie mixes are fridays starting at 9pm ish
p.s.s keep up with announcements from the newbie mix group this season in esea is about to end, and i think kevin will do a newbie mix drive next season, to get new players into comp, so if your still interested defintly sign up for it.
p.s.s.s Also if your really into trying to play next season, esea is the website used primarly for serious 6s competitors, you should go ahead and make a account: https://play.esea.net/index.php?s=upanel&d=register

TRAWSONI've seen some clips without the weapon model in the game is that an option ig? cannot seem to find it...

If you have an autoexec, include this line in it:

bindtoggle <key> r_drawviewmodel

Replacing <key> with whatever you want to push to turn viewmodels on/off. Alternatively, type this into the console once.

As far as console commands are concerned, tagg made an excellent video a while back explaining console commands and some that you should change from the default settings because the default settings are just not good if you're trying to get better at tf2

It really is awesome to see how welcoming the tf2 community is to new players.

Speaking of which, if you're looking to see the higher levels of play, most Teamfortress.tv stream vods are uploaded to their youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgw6HIeKVUHn0yrqdWnvb4Q
Thanks to the really good casters we've been blessed with, you can watch casts understanding most of the stuff they say and as you keep playing you'll understand even better what's going on.

Good luck friend and always keep in mind that having fun is the most important thing.

I think if you target the way in which you learn to get good early on, you can be pretty decent by 1000 hours.

For example, if, in the near future, you spend maybe 20 hours learning to rocket jump even, you'll see so much improvement in terms of how it opens up your options in games. I didn't learn until maybe 500 hours, and not properly until more recently at 800.

I think it's still worth it to play tf2 mainly because of the kind of thing that happens in this thread. Good luck finding OW players that are dedicated to helping other people learn about the game solely because they want other to be passionate about the same things they are. I mean sure there are OW players like that, but they are few and far between. Here it's almost impossible to miss people who just want to help which I'm sure you just discovered from this thread.
Good luck and I hope you stick around!

The best thing you can do as a new player is to get a config for netcode, raw mouseinput, fov, viewmodel fov etc as people here have mentioned, custom huds are also nice, there is a big variety out there.

If you have a good enough processor snd_mixahead 0.05 (or any slightly lower/higher value) makes the game sound more responsive

tf_scoreboard_ping_as_text 1 removes the newly added ping bars and displays ping as text

tf_hud_target_id_disable_floating_health 1 disables the newly added floating health feature. In the end its personal taste but I have not found a single person that wants floating health

If you plan to use ingame voice chat
voice_overdrive 1
snd_ducktovolume 1
^ fixes voice chat making other sound quiet

There are a lot of differences in TF2 and Overwatch but generally speaking tf2 is faster and more technical. If you have any questions or wonder about anything, feel free to ask
