Forcing aliases for casted matches?

I just tuned into the tftv cast of ChampGG vs LEGO. I'm pretty out of touch with the EU scene and hearing casters call players by aliases that they aren't actually using can sometimes be confusing. I think I pieced it together after a couple rounds(91 = Dmoule and cmd = condom?).

Anyways it's just an observation that a good percentage of viewers probably have a similar level of familiarity with player aliases. They also might not be able to translate the what the casters are saying and work out who they are talking about as easily as I was.

I know ESEA forces aliases and team tags and some players still get around this by using other random aliases(why???). I think it should be written into league rules that casted games will require team tags and normal aliases. It would help newer viewers follow the action, and personally I don't understand why teams and players wouldn't want to stick with consistent names anyways. I think it helps develop a following and new viewers who tune in seeing airshots by 91 are gonna be like "man I can't wait to see 91's next game!"

Thoughts?

This has been noticed and discussed internally. I think we're looking at getting the statusspec forced aliases on (if it's still working, I'm not sure if it's been confirmed broken or not, too many messages in Slack). However, it would be easier if ETF2L forced it, although I thought they already did. Look at BumFreeze's post, ETF2L should be enforcing it.

1.8.2 Premiership players must use their real nicknames

All players who play a match in the Premiership division must play with their ETF2L nickname. Team tags and sponsorship additions are allowed but the nickname must be the same as the nickname on ETF2L, letter for letter.

I'm 99% certain it's a rule in etf2l that you have to use your rosters etf2l name during matches. If the players change the name for the roster and use it for matches not much can really be done. I think it would be better for the casters to just use the aliases they're using in the server unless it's obviously very wrong. Nothing will stop players from acting dumb.

They do this in dota during the international as well for the same reason. No real reason why this shouldn't be enforced

I think those are their "real" aliases..... if you looked on etf2l you probably wouldn't find "condom" but would find a "cmd". If a player's real/original steam name is literally "9i86uhnrtgersv" but everyone calls them "dave" in spoken language, then what are you going to do...?

Edit: I'm slow today. The solution is a hud that lets casters over-write the displayed name with something easier for viewers to pick up on.

SmytherEdit: I'm slow today. The solution is a hud that lets casters over-write the displayed name with something easier for viewers to pick up on.

A hud that does it would be weird and pretty broken, since iirc you don't know what order players will join in, and overlaying it would require reloading the hud. A stream overlay would be better because it wouldn't require a hud_reload, but the only good method (without valve helping out) would be plugins so it automatically replaces names (and would also work with the class ordering option for when someone switches classes and teamswitches without some manual labour swapping them around).

I think (as long as statusspec stays maintained and updated for future updates, which correct me if I'm wrong that's the plan) just getting a big list of prem/invite/whatever else gets casted players and forcing an alias on them (even if they normally play with their actual name, just to be sure) would be the best solution. The technology is already there, we just haven't made use of it yet.

what kind of punishment would be given to someone who violates this intentionally tho? there has to be cause and effect, otherwise no one will fallow this even if there is a rule that states it. It just seems unenforceable otherwise.

There was a rule to use your ETF2L aliases for Prem officials, which was quite strict (IIRC TLR got a warning 'cause WAR was using WAR instead of full WARHURYEAH). Don't know what happened to it.

It's actually still there (1.8.2).

Didn't notice it's already been posted smh.

Ya dmoule forgot to change, sorry
And my name is cmd on etf2l (and everywhere but here), which I did to give production an alternative (since condom is a stupid alias) but they don't seem to care and neither do I really

In ETF2L you receive warnings which eventually lead to losing points in the league table or even getting removed. ESEA does player bans via the Invite Conduct Policy.

He still has a point. Imagine if a guy called 009EFF (legit etf2l alias) played in a casted game. How'd you call him?

There is a caster plugin that replaces the names to ETF2L names from our API, but I don't think the streamer used it tonight.

Edit: If we see players breaking the name rule for prem they will be punished accordingly.

UGC actually enforced this rule after one of the '92 matches where there was a lot of aliasing going on (I think saam aliasing as "evl are fucking retards" might have pushed it over the edge). It's kind of annoying when you have admins constantly telling you to get your players to change their names, so you have to constantly tell your players that they need their name to be proper, and they're all memeing and refuse to do it, but I understand why the rule is there.

Also, whenever Sigafoo casts, always has every player pre-aliased as their proper name, which granted how he's only one person and the EVL casting team was presumably more than one person, always amused me why they just didn't do that. I don't know how much work it is but i doubt it really is that much work.

To my knowledge the status spec plugin is no longer working, but honestly when it was I'm surprised it wasn't used more in production. It's a really easy way not only to tag people up correctly, which makes it easier for casters, but also gives a team cohesion and profession look to the cast. And it only takes maybe 10-20 minutes to set up, one time, for a team.

Here's an example of the difference it can make.

http://i.imgur.com/Vwb4Jev.png

On the left you can see we force aliased everyone and also added team tags to the cast to make our cast more professional and easier to follow. On the right you can see they didn't do anything to try to fix them / left them as is.

I agree though, the best option would be to have players actually tag up properly.

It's not a ton of work though it depends on the league. UGC is actually pretty easy to get peoples steamIds from. This is what the config looks like once it's set up. Once you set up the team one time, you're good. Only thing is if they have a sub/ringer, but then it's literally just adding in one more person. Which should only take a minute or two.

It has been enforced in the past, but an admin has to go out and specifically do that, and usually that only happens when it's egregious and someone goes and complains.
