Improve the tutorial?

Do you think Valve / TF2 Devs should improve the tutorial? Maybe also make it mandatory so people know how to play this game better? It could help players learn and already give a huge headstart to players. I don't remember what was in the tutorial but I don't think I played it untill I had 100 hours...

After nine years in development, hopefully it will have been worth the wait.

yeah it would be good if there was a mandatory tutorial for competitive queuing that presented the basic components and dynamic of 6s, even as simple as making sure the user can rocket/sticky jump consistently

jerking it three times in a row is sort of a challenge too but that doesn't mean it'll make you better at tf2

I'd rather have an extra person working on important things rather than a tutorial

It'd be way better if they change the default values.
Things like enabling fov_desired 90, hitsounds, damage numbers, fast weapon switch, etc by default. Maybe even updating the network settings like cl_interp because those are way outdated. These would help all new players a lot more than an updated tutorial. Also it'd take less than an hour for 1 person to do this compared to multiple weeks of work to update the tutorial

yes! a hundred times yes!
TF2 had rocket jumps as a feature of the game since the beta trailers and they havent added a single tutorial about it! just small mentions on loading screens
MyM would've been a great time to implement new tutorials slightly more advanced than "what does WASD do?" and "whats the key to reload"

edit: something like the quake live training and i will love the TF Team forever

didn't the actual tutorial for soldier make you have to rocketjump over some tall thing to get past it
it's been years since i did it but i'm pretty sure they tell you how to do the most basic rocketjump

its just movement keys, shooting range and switching weapons as far as i remember
i love how they explain basic logic like how the blast of the rockets can hit multiple enemies at once

whilst they are remaking it they should entirely remove the thing where you have to click to "confirm" you want to switch weapons

Here are my quick suggestions:

  • Remove the "USE SHOVEL AT POINT BLANK DONT YOU DARE USE A SHOTGUN"
  • Add a tutorial for Medic...
  • Don't have retarded settings as defaults. Make sure the defaults are actually playable, so fast weapon switch by default.
  • Actually fix the tutorial, as of now bots don't even spawn
  • I'd like to see TF team attempt to explain airstrafing and other more advanced movement capabilities, most people don't need a tutorial to explain what the W key does
  • When people get into competitive actually tell them why 5 spies running le triangle is not the ELITE strategy, so basically tell them what classes to use in different situations and help them understand that most classes cannot be played 24/7, so basically "Engineer is very effective when defending your base, but is not as powerful in other areas" or something like that
  • Tell new players that your stickybomb launcher is your primary weapon
  • https://clips.twitch.tv/warhuryeah/QuaintChickenItsBoshyTime some people are just silly but maybe making parts of tutorials mandatory so people actually know that right clicking makes them invisible

Instead of changing the default values, they could make you pick your own the first time you open the game, before being able to do anything else, and then make you do a tutorial.

faggetInstead of changing the default values, they could make you pick your own the first time you open the game, before being able to do anything else, and then make you do a tutorial.

Most people don't know what the values are, what they do, or why they even matter for the first few hundred hours. Forcing them to chose them on start would make some pretty fucked, random, broken configs if valve didn't add detailed explanations of what each did and the pros and cons of different values. If they added that, it would be a lot of reading and decisions that would turn people off of what they thought was a fun, free to play game.

But, I can definitely support a forced tutorial. Hopefully, much more streamlined faster paced. The current one has a lot of standing around and waiting, with very restricted movement. Which is just stupid, considering movement is possibly the highest skill ceiling in the game. It would be pretty cool to have a simple rocketjumping tutorial. Just enough to teach the basics of what can be done, but easy enough that a new player won't get stuck long enough to be frustrated. Maybe a small vertical jump, then one over a pit explaining horizontal jumps starting from a wall.

clicheIt would be pretty cool to have a simple rocketjumping tutorial

lol i remember thinking there was something wrong with my computer because i can't go as high as other players when i shoot the ground. They could even mention jump servers in the tutorials, that would be so good. Damn there are so many things valve should do that would make the game way more enjoyable for new players.

I feel like a real tutorial and explanation of how to not get completely destroyed in TF2 would make the game not only much more enjoyable for newer players but for veterans playing in pubs/MM. I'm sure pretty much everyone was completely pooped on for the first like 200 hours because TF2 doesn't explain any real mechanics, just how to build buildings because thats the only class someone would ever play right

Some classes are really basic like Scout but I don't think a quick course for double jumping and maybe if the TF team is up to it airstrafing would hurt, there DEFINITELY should be a very simple rocket jumping tutorial because movement is such a crucial aspect of playing this game. I think they should also start really teaching newbies how to play their class, something simple like showing you when to use your different weapons as Demoman, the fact that you use your secondary weapon, the Medigun, to heal people as Medic, some of these things go COMPLETELY unexplained.

I bet TF2 is an extremely confusing game for newer players since the tutorials explain jack shit
