The future of tf2 and i58

Not to sound negative but since overwatch came out many pros HAVE switched over to it for the money. I know that a lot more people will also be switching after i58 and s22, like muma, shrugger, sezco, and probably others. So what is valves plan to turn things around? Will there be a s23 and s24? Just curious on your current opinion on the state of tf2 and its future. Again, not trying to sound negative.

its beyond the community's control at this point if it wants to grow

if the community continues to support it like it is now, it will continue on for at least a few years while still declining

Orang3I am not saying tf2 is dying, i am just curious on the future of tf2 and where it is headed.

Wait and find out!

All you can do is encourage as many non-comp people to play as possible (yes even for Highlander). Also running teams on TF2 is huge, community needs more people willing to lead and organise.

The competition level is a lot lower than it used to be and this was before overwatch was a thing. I think that with valve starting out matchmaking is a much bigger step forward than any amount of leagues or tournaments.

im sure once some of these newer players start to get really good they are gonna be putting in work for tf2, because as it is now, a lot of people that i used to talk to and play with have seemed to drift away from the game(myself included) but seriously some of these guys play the game a shitload and are seriously dedicated

The hugest thing is probably to play MM a ton and continuously help people into comp by directing them to tftv and newbie mixes/tf2center/everything.

It is sad to see so many known faces move to OW, though.

The sad thing is that OW isn't even a good or better competitve shooter than TF2.
People just leave because of the money :/
I wouldn't be so sad if pro's were leaving for the new Quake or something (if it turns out to be good)

matchmaking was the plan but look how that turned out lol. hopefully they learn to take feedback from a beta next time instead of just gradually make the map pool worse and worse

This game was never meant to be played competitively anyway.

No one plays TF2 forever. Eventually we get old and die. I know its a sad truth to handle but we may only have 50 or so years left of some of the top pros. I just hope Valve fixes match making by then.

flyyyyobvious answer is we need new pros, the ones that are loyal

the ones that are loyal? some of the most recent pros who have turned on tf2 have been playing this game for 5 years or even more than that.

I imagine i58 will probably be the last international lan we have unless we have a very sudden and large player boost which I personally do not see happening. Overwatch is the newer game and thus is just going to pull more player interest, is getting as far as I can see pretty active developer feedback and the game is just thriving with pros from other games.

On the flip side outside of the two or so posts addressing some major issues that even then took collective community outrage in order to get Valve to even shed a word of information but that has always been the biggest issue is. For whatever reason Valve just does not feel that it is necessary to let the community know what they are currently doing with the game despite the TF2 Blog almost being made for that purpose and TF2 itself being so full of community input from simple bug fixes to entire updates and yet. We get spoon fed information and are allowed to offer little to no feedback outside of just a few people in the community and even then that feedback seems limited.

Like I don't think there is any person in this community that would ever think the Mediguns buff was a good idea and yet, it happened. Crit-a-cola got a balance change that solves literally nothing. The Sydney Sleeper got another buff. All changes that just indicate a lack of understanding of anything. Even down to applying very little of the 6s meta we already know and I understand that is dictated by weapon bans but the current matchmaking ruleset does not even come close to the actual competitive format played outside of being a 6v6 mode. Less of a bridge more of another way for the game to confuse people.

Even outside game support is redundant, all news about leagues, events and everything else competitive related just out of the way and yeah we got a post about i55 and the ingame notification for S21 grand finals but other then that there is next to nothing about competitive events going on so we just get the minimal exposure.

Orang3 The future of tf2 and i58 CollaideKill me I don't want to read this thread every week

y click tho

Besides that it is really up to Valve at this point to choose what happens to TF2 competitively. Over the past 8 years this community has conclusively proven its dedication, its willpower, its stubborn willingness to just keep playing the game against all odds. It's honestly ridiculous how much some people have put in here while getting nothing but "appreciation" back. I mean, I love playing this game and don't plan on quitting anytime soon, but compared to almost every high level player, I only just started. Hard to blame someone who's been playing a 3rd party patched together comp mode for years, and at the highest of levels, for moving to another game where their talent could start working for them for once.

Valve could give TF2 the CS:GO treatment and save face in 2 months. People still play it a lot and use the marketplace with zero effort from Valve. Why would they save it?
