It's the new thing now. I get that we're talking about Quake, but I'm really not surprised. I'll wait for more info before getting upset.

Being serious, I agree it's not worth writing anything off completely yet, good things could feasibly still come of this and it's worth waiting for more info, but this doesn't really feel like the best start for a new Quake game.

Being less serious, "...a roster of unique characters..."

✓ Removed Quake Live Linux support
✓ Didn't make a single well-received update for it
✓ Killed the already decreasing playerbase by making it 10€ (was F2P)
✓ Call the Halo-ish Doom multiplayer "arena-action" (made by Halo 4 mp devs)
? Just jumped in the OW bandwagon
Edit: they just confirmed that they are working with a different halo dev for Quake Champions

I don't want to write off the game automatically, in fact i'd be ecstatic if gameplay comes out and it looks like something I could enjoy playing, but this feels like way too much of a cash grab at overwatch off of the back of the quake brandname for me not to be slightly angry

let's be honest, DOOM was universally hated before it launched because the multiplayer had a lot of signs that the game might not be going the right direction, and yet it turned out amazing. let's wait and see. i just hope they learned from it.

most of us are just sick of games being chalked up to be like the arena shooters a lot of us grew up on and then getting something that isn't one at all, at this point the only game i'm looking forward to is unreal tournament 4

i'm not disagreeing there, just saying that you should always give something a chance. wait until we have more to look at, probably at QuakeCon.

hype goes both ways. don't get too hyped for a game, and don't get too hyped against a game.

being PC only is a pretty good sign though - it means they didn't see consoles as a good audience for the game, which means it isn't dumbed down at all because of consoles. one of the worst parts of DOOM was that SnapMap was such a great concept, but it was executed poorly because of console limitations. i'm excited to see what the first PC-only game from id since 2004 will end up looking like.

the thing that pisses me off is Bethesda calling a slow-ass multiplayer game with loadouts and limited amount of weapons you can carry "arena shooter"
The singleplayer in doom is great but multiplayer is just... wrong
by their definition of arena shooter its very uncertain what they actually release when quake champions comes out

agreed there, calling it an arena shooter was a really bad decision. there was a lot mishandled about doom, but most of it was caused by bethesda as a publisher and not id software as a developer. every part of the game that id touched was good - the engine, singleplayer, and graphics. multiplayer and snapmap were both outsourced, and the beta was mostly a publicity thing from bethesda.

as long as they don't outsource parts of quake it has potential to be really good, and id tech 6 is definitely an engine capable of a high frame rate, fast paced arena shooter.

The fact that the guy announcing it worked on Quake 1, and then proceeded to call it a classic arena fps gives me a lot of hope.

Really hyped

To be fair, they dropped Certain Affinity and are taking the MP into their own hands.

STOGE"WE KNOW YOU WANT MORE QUAKE, BUT JUST ENJOY THIS SHITTY F2P CARD GAME INSTEAD"

man I love the games their studios make, but fuck do I hate Bethesda as a publisher. they gave half the show to that fucking looney guy from ESO and spent way too long with Legends. they got all of the BGS stuff out of the way at the very beginning, which was some cool stuff but wasn't announced the right way, and they dropped both a great Quake trailer and a great Prey trailer, and then went quiet about both for the rest of the show. not to mention how awful those two guys at the start were.

the only thing they did right this presentation was the Dishonored stuff. definitely doesn't compare to last year, and feels a lot more like what other companies like EA and Ubi are doing.

last year, i was excited about every single thing (except Legends) that they showed off. this year the only newly announced things I'm excited about are the inevitable bug fixes coming to Fallout with VR support, and Quake.

battlecry isn't axed yet, and it was in development by battlecry studios, not id software, so if you're suggesting the game has transitioned kind of like titan did into overwatch, i think you're pretty mistaken. they weren't even on the same engine - battlecry used/uses/will use cryengine, and quake is using id tech 6.

I'm not saying they're going to completely rework the game into a different engine. I'm saying why not use a well established IP like Quake and combine it with elements from their struggling project Battlecry to enter the market of class based shooters that is popular right now. BattleCry Studios and ID Software are both subsidiaries of ZeniMax Media just like you guessed it, Bethesda.

Of course this is all speculation I'm saying so take it for granted.

while anything is possible, id is more likely just holding back because they don't have much else to show yet, since they just finished up with doom. battlecry studios has also posted new job openings, claiming they're working on a new multiplayer shooter, so that probably means that battlecry is done and they'll be moving onto something new - nothing official yet though.

all anyone can do at this point is speculate until quakecon.
