How to make tf2 an esport

I quit playing tf2 about a year ago now after playing at a medium-high level in europe (div2) and play cs like many others have, but still enjoy tf2, here are some serious suggestions that I think could develop tf2 to be taken more seriously before matchmaking is fully implemented and hopefully opens alot of peoples eyes to comp tf2

- Make it 5v5 , 12 players is too many and makes it all look like a mess with too much going on too a newer player, also opens up more tactical choices with 5 players instead of 6 and how to play the 5th player and what class

-respawn times, ubercharges and cap times longer, this makes each push more important and precise, slowing the game down bringing more tactics and making each play more important also leading to less people trying to play individually - puttin the team in team fortress 2

In my opinion the core dynamics of 6v6 could be refined to open up to a larger audience and make it a much more exciting and interesting game to play and spectator, 6v6 just looks like a dm server with comms at the moment

Thanks for reading me :))

Marmie- Make it 5v5 , 12 players is too many and makes it all look like a mess with too much going on too a newer player

what makes you think 5v5 will be any less confusing? 6v6 is fine to watch IMO.

also opens up more tactical choices with 5 players instead of 6 and how to play the 5th player and what class

am i being jostled

Competetive tf2 is difficult to follow for a new player for a bunch of reasons, but I doubt taking 2 players out of the server will do anything to solve those problems.

One reason some people don't like watching competetive tf2 is because of how slow moving it is, increasing timers will just add some more buffer time to the inevitable uber vs uber stalemates.

edit: wtf this is marmite

Marmie6v6 just looks like a dm server with comms at the moment

the only reason that is because most of tf2 casting is tailored towards people who sort of have a grasp of the game and since the game is faster paced its hard to explain everything but tf2 is very tactical imo

-Sponsors
-Recogntion as an actual competitive game
-More eSport organizations adopting teams
-More tournaments with larger prize pools
-Promotion of Competitive Game live streams on the menu

Those things are my guess as to what tf2 needs to become an esport along with some smaller stuff I didnt mention. Once mm comes out, were gonna have to wait and see if all this happens.

Yes

Teapot if ubers were to build slower there would be less stalemates because you could push off an advantage alot easier
At the moment 20% advantage is nothing because by the time they have pushed you can just kite the uber and use back in 10 seconds

In regards to the ubertimes/respawn, bradford made a great argument that if ubers built in 20-30 seconds and lasted 4-6 seconds long, the game would be much more fast-paced while having that same value of precision. Was a concept he gave during one of his streams a long time ago and I thought it was interesting.

how can you want to make it more exciting while slowing the game down at the same time? Slowing the game down will make that game boring and way more stalemate - y because teams wont push unless they have a huge add. imagine every hold being like the quick fix lan

Tf2 is pretty fast paced to be honest apart from s talemates, which there would be less of with slower ubercharge rates, it makes each push more exciting, as each frag is more important

On the 5v5 point, rip scout mains. I assume and still think that there are generally more scout/soldier players in the community. In a way this could also be bad for now if a scout would be the class that would be cut, that scout would require a whole new different team that requires 2 sollies, 1 demo, 1 med...aka you have to find another med player and assuming that there are decently low amount of med players. It's like how people want Highlander for 9v9 in MatchMaking, for every one pyro that wants to play a HL MM match, that requires 2 medics, 2 heavies, and 2 engineers(one for each team and assuming that those are the least played/picked). On the actually gameplay basis of 5v5, that makes scout a bit more vulnerable as scout combos are strong together and can be very tough to play alone time to time. There will be even less variety and the scout's role may get worse.

As for respawn times, you are suggesting that we slow down the game and make things longer in order to help make it an eSport. This only works for games such as Dota 2 and LoL, essentially MOBAs because they have a more defined early, mid, and late game. SC2 is changing to a faster paced game with it's 12 workers in the beginning and need for early expansions, which allows for more variety of builds and combos. But FPSes are a different story. TF2 is somewhat of a fast-paced FPS game if not the fastest team based FPS game that is still alive today(sorry quake i love you). The way soldiers, scouts, and demos play is somewhat fast and each kill is important. If you make respawn times longer, then dying would be HORRIBLE. You have to remember and note that killing in an FPS is generally fast and happens more frequently than it does in a MOBA. The respawn times in games are set to a decent scale depending on the speed of their games. While TF2 respawn is a bit weird and works in different ways of cap points and such(check the wiki), it has somewhat done us well. Changing ubercharge times and cap times longer is a bit too much, as it's changing one of the bases of the game pretty harshly. There also seems to be no problem with it either as far as these past few years have been.

Overall, you have stated that you wanted to broaden it to a larger audience. But if the only way to broaden it is to change what we are used to, love, and what the game really is, then it's too far. It's important to not change the game too much in what the community loves cause it's also what we liked in the first place to keep staying all this time. It's like how the Melee community loves how things are in Melee and they stayed with it. I think it's a popular choice for the game to stay the way the people who are loyal and already play it rather than changing just so other people can start to like it.

#13 these changes i think i would find more enjoyable to play than the current state, but if there's ever a time to rethink the base of the game it's before valve start involving themselves in comp

Marmiebut if there's ever a time to rethink the base of the game it's before valve start involving themselves in the comp scene

Are you implying that the last 8-9 years of updates and patches have been for naught? Please post the last game you played that has had this much content released from a developer over almost a decade, and then said developer thought "oh shit we about to be eSports now, better overhaul our entire game mechanic because some dingus on a forum thinks slowing the game down even more is a good idea." Sounds like you're pretty set on that 5v5 format in TF2 though, better start campaigning for Arena:Respawn.

MarmieI quit playing tf2 about a year ago now after playing at a medium-high level in europe (div2) and play cs like many others have, but still enjoy tf2, here are some serious suggestions that I think could develop tf2 to be taken more seriously before matchmaking is fully implemented and hopefully opens alot of peoples eyes to comp tf2

1. 6s is fine. if you have trouble watching it, you're either COMPLETELY new to TF2 or just not paying attention

2. so basically you want to slow down the game so people can get into it easier? that's dumb. you shouldn't have to lower the skill ceiling cause people can't play a fast paced game. imagine if in CSGO or Quake you spawned with armor. sure, it makes the game easier for the new player, but it makes the game just a tad bit less skillful (esp in Quake where item tracking and map control is so crucial).

3. this kind of ties in with 1 too. i remember my first big LAN that i watched. was ESEA S15 LAN. it was without a doubt one of the most exciting LANs i've ever watched. i have NEVER touched 6s then and was only playing iron HL. you don't need to be a mastermind of the game to follow what's going on.
