New Open Teams, how's your season going?

Very excited to be playing esea for my first season, I look forward to every match. Been friends with almost everyone on the roster for a few years now. Still getting low DPM compared to the rest of the team but I feel I'm improving each week. Hope everyone is having a fun season so far.

As a person who is mentoring one of the newbie mix teams I'm going to write a little bit about what I've seen.

1. If something like forming noobie mix teams is ever done again, the teams need to be formed *months* in advance - I would suggest at least 2. Most of the noobie mix teams died before they even got off the ground because it turned out 2-3+ players on the roster were incapable of keeping a schedule conducive to actually playing in ESEA, and since the teams were only made 2 weeks prior to the start of the season it was incredibly difficult to find replacements despite the general lack of stringent skill requirements.

2. Because of the short start, and ensuing roster shake ups, it was more difficult than necessary to get the teams that did survive to work out any sort of chemistry with each other; if any can really be said to exist now. This of course lead to pretty rapid demoralization, unnecessary team death, and a generalized lack of chemistry which in turn leads to more defeat, which becomes a low-open death spiral. This is perfectly normal behavior for a new team - you're going to have people who *think* they want to play 6s in ESEA, and who will discover shortly thereafter that they actually have no such desire to make such a thing a reality. This should be happening in an off-season enviornment, because now the issue becomes that any prospective new players have little desire to pay up to play on a losing team that only has 4 weeks left in the season. So even the 2 teams that did manage to survive have a really heavy, and arbitrary, obstacle placed in front of their continued existence.

3. The teams that were created had rather wide skill and experience disparities, but only had 2 weeks to try to catch up those that were significantly behind - and I worry that because of the general lack of success and the shortness of many of the games and scrims being played, that those who started out behind will take *significantly* longer to be brought up to speed than if they had been playing in a more relaxed pre-season setting where time could be taken to work on individual short-comings, instead of having to keep a stringent scrim schedule to even be able to have a decent hope of taking 1-2 rounds.

I remember when I made my first team we had 5 roster changes within the first few weeks and *after* that were able to throw together a reasonably successful team (we won UGC platinum and then snuck into ESEA playoffs and won the necessary one game to make IM lol). The noobie team I've been trying to guide through this process has gone through 3 roster shake ups so far, and I can only assume more are in store should they try to keep the team together - this all should have happened *well* before the season started if they were to be given any chance of even modest success.

I'm not criticizing the program as it were or its intent- far from it - I've greatly enjoyed working with my team, but if this is done again things need to be changed or it's highly unlikely we'll have a noobie team notch a second season in their belts.

So I'm the (ex) pocket on the newbie team that was mentored by Marxist and I'd like to add/reiterate a few things. I really really wished they had put us together a lot earlier. From my own personal experience, the odds were stacked against us because 1) we didn't know each other until a few weeks before the season started and 2) we were all varying skill levels. I think if either of those weren't the case, things would have been a lot easier for us. I feel like most other new teams (not newbie mix teams) are at least friends beforehand OR hold tryouts to avoid one of those two problems I just mentioned.

So not only do we have to figure out if we even have personal chemistry (do I like my teammates or do their voices/personalities make me want to jump off a cliff) but we also have to see if we are even on the same skill level (which we weren't). And we had to figure all of this out while also tackling ESEA for the first time (2 matches a week, scheduling, REscheduling) and all that fun stuff. Not a formula for fun times.

In any case, I'm really glad I did it though, because I learned a lot about the game (thanks Marxist!!) and made some new friends, so I appreciate the Newbie Mix staff organizing it for us. :)

I'm the Medic and captain for the team Scared of Sundays, created in the newbie mix drive and mentored by Tery_. In spite of our 2-6 record we're having a great time and everyone is meshing pretty well. We're taking it as a learning experience, as none of us have much comp experience besides iron UGC and one gold highlander player. We look to continue playing in ESEA for the near future thanks to the opportunity given to us by the Newbie Mix drive.

Pocket for Egg Salad Dressing here, it's the first season of ESEA for all of us, and we really want to thank Brooky12 and Alkaline for both convincing us to give this a shot and even going so far as to pay our fees.

Also shoutout to Shiki (Pocket for Snailed It), who has recently started taking time when he's apparently bored at 4 am in the morning to do some demo reviews and tell me all the stupid things I do(n't do).

Even though we came in this season expecting to learn, it's still rough losing. Other than that it has been really enjoyable! I talked to the players on our team and we should be returning with at least 5/6 of our starting roster next season.

my team has the dm potential, but we dont have a demo who will consistently play (we don't even have a demo at the moment) so that's fun. all in all though I'm having a fun open season, gonna do it again next hopefully.

I'm super happy that some of the newbie mix teams worked out decently.

Marxist <snip>

We'll definitely be getting into it much early next time around (right at the end of the regular season, actually). Made a lot of mistakes this go around (didn't use my esea referral code so I'm paying for several people out of pocket, didn't wait until everyone had signed up to form the first few teams, etc) that are easily fixed. Definitely planning on doing another one, though.

Lajo12345we are a newbie mix team, have yet to win a match

The first 8 games of the season are randomly scheduled, you're a low open team (because you're all new players), did you honestly think that you'd be able to beat people who have played 6s much longer than you? Sure the odds were that you'd get a winnable match or two in the first 8, but that can not be the case. Objectively you got a hard schedule, as you played a lot of experienced players.

Lets break down your schedule so far:
Match 1: High Impact 5-3 loss. Close game, I remember playing against Zabi last season when he was on a solid Disney Jam team meaning they had at least one person with more than one season of ESEA experience. You played a good close game though.

Match 2: Hurricane Watch 5-0 Loss. While it's each players first ESEA season, I played gold with Snow 3 seasons ago, and was told the queyh and loot have played a few seasons of UGC. While it is only UGC, it is still competitive experience and theyre a solid team.

Match 3: Wood Pig Black 4-0 Loss. Ex Invite players vs newbie mix team, I'm sure you expected a 4-0 here.

Match 4: Tune Squad 4-0 loss. Aiera came into open the same time I did 4~ seasons ago and some people on that team like sleeping have been playing since S12/13/14 including sleeping in IM as recently as last season.

Match 5: Thats so randal 5-0 loss. Core of the team is in its second ESEA season TOGETHER, rest of team has 3-4 seasons experience. Of course the team that has played more than a season together beat the team of new players, it happens. A lot.

Match 6: Blasty Blast 5-1 loss. Lydi and nmz are ex IM, Kapoww ex invite, others have played open playoffs. Super experienced players. Good job taking a round.

Match 7: My B 5-0 loss. Bunch of DM lords with multiple seasons of open. They've beaten hot dads (8-1), and lost to not around bears(6-4) and astotzka(9-1) via close 4-3 and 5-3 losses

Match 8: Portland Burnsiders. Flethcher is a god, team has solid DM, Good indicator is they took 2 rounds off tunesquad who 4-0d you, probably should have expected it to some degree.

Match 9: Chex offenders 2-0 FFL. Forfeit, ignoring it.

Anyways my point is, you had a hard schedule, teams with a lot more experience have lost to these teams, over half of them have winning records. Yeah it sucks losing, but everyone has been through it. I had 1 win my first season.

Benk put it best in the version of this thread from my first open season:

BenkGlad to see new players not afraid to lose. Getting smashed your first season is like a right of passage for those brave enough to face a real challenge.

You put in the low open grind, lose a lot, but learn a lot. You've got a very good coach in Marxist, I'm sure you've learned a lot and improved, dont focus on the match results.

I cant speak for the team forming process, but it cant be more last minute than my team last season which formed less than an hour before the deadline!

And lastly, you play at least one dead team to end the season, so at least you're guaranteed to not go 0-16!

Roaming on https://play.esea.net/teams/74832

Started super rocky with lots of inconsistency on comms and really committing to fights, but with lots of scrims and practice against other teams we are improving. After 2 FFWs we finally won our first match this last Tuesday :D

Having a blast this season, wish I was doing better on an individual level though

Yo to be fair I don't think this was entirely newbie mixes fault. It was their first time doing this and other teams have done well so I don't think it's fair to throw newbie under the bus when they put everything together for us.

(Former demo for the team Marxist mentored) I think that the experience I gained was invaluable although I was one of the worse members on the team. I think I got a decent grasp on what Open is and without newbie mixes I would've never jumped into 6's.

I do plan to play next season once I've gotten a bit better by using the off-season to learn more. Although I do think that experience should be a much bigger factor in putting teams together next season. But I don't think that would've helped some of the personality clashing we had on the team.

I'm really glad to hear you'll be running another Newbie drive - my team is transitioning from UGC and this is exactly the kind of support that would be incredibly helpful to players like us. We were really interested in participating last time around, but we decided against it due to the fact that one of the stipulations was that coaches got to pick teams and we didn't want to be separated after three seasons of playing together.

I'd like to ask you and the coaches to consider taking on teams like mine, in addition to forming them from the Mixes. We already have the chemistry and dedication, we just need the guidance and its been tough finding mentors to help along the way.

Best of luck to you and your team, but remember that even IF no one is able to help you as a coach or whatever, you as a team can still start playing esea. All you need to do is a set a scrim schedule, find scrims on discord and sign up for esea. You can find your own road and you don't need your hand held.

Roaming for Yugioh Gaming: https://play.esea.net/teams/111594

This is some of the most fun I've ever had playing the game. Everyone is all friends and we are all improving so much as individuals and as a team. I couldn't have even imagined having a better first season of open, and we can only go forward from here. I've improved a lot since I started playing with these guys and I'm really excited to see how far we can go together as a team.

Thanks for the feedback - we'll probably end up doing Open next season with or without help, but it's hard going in blind. I know many have done it without 'having their hands held' as you said, but the growing we've done when we've had a mentor to guide us has been in leaps and bounds. You'll only go so far watching videos on YouTube, and there are so many things inexperienced teams might not even realize they're doing wrong because they lack that background. Working with someone with the experience and foresight is the whole point of this drive and finding a mentor at all.

We're resourceful, and I know many teams are, and left to our own devices we can figure things out, but it's the difference between having a teacher and tackling the text book on your own. With proper feedback you just learn better and faster, and have greater insight into your mistakes. Like I said, we've been together for three seasons and we do okay on our own, but we perform at our best when we have someone to help. So I have my fingers crossed that teams like mine will be considered for the next Newbie drive.

Mentors aren't limited to the drive. You can find a team mentor on your own as well - don't let that hold you back!

Lajo12345i think my team will agree, this picture sums up our season/team status at the momment. lol we are a newbie mix team, have yet to win a match. safe to say i will never be newbie-mixing again, the way it was thrown together last minute was pretty shite.

If you're new to comp and you play ESEA thats kind of the nature of how your first season will go. You'll get your shit kicked in by people who are better than you and there is nothing you can do to beat them. However, as the season goes on you eventually play teams of your caliber and start to having really fun and close games.

In my first season my team lost 9 out of 10 of our first 10 matches. Luckily we were all great friends so we were still having fun playing with each other and improving together. It was all our first season of esea with very little comp exp so we were comparatively a newbie mix team as well. The best you can do is hold out and stay together. The core of my team stayed together for 2 more seasons and eventually made playoffs our last season.

Really unfortunate that a miscommunication held you back from playing in ESEA this season. The teams are premade (by me and some other newbie mix admins/ helpers), and you can ask to be on a team with friends (meaning you could have maintained your whole roster). See you next season!
