Shit talk is a part of competing, it's pretty much everywhere, sports, elections and so on. It's just there to get some rivalry going, get the opponents blood going and trying to get a rise out of them. You're trying to rattle them so they lose focus on what they're doing.

It's pretty much all light hearted, as a shit talker I don't mean any wrong doing from it, I'm just trying to create rivalries and spice things up a bit. People get more excited/hyped if there's a rivalry involved and stuff.

Also, you can only shit talk if you can take it back, and try and not get too personal.

Honestly Shit Talking is probably scientifically the best thing you can try to do, first off a study(I will try to find it) has shown that people get stronger when there angry but also get dumber causing them to make worse decisions. On the Shit talkers side it does raise morale as bullying has been shown to make people happier. I see no reason why a little shit talking will be negative, obviously there is a line where it becomes bad sportsmanship.

owlIn the end, it's your team, and you as the leader get to decide how the team exists. If you don't want people shittalking, then don't allow it. Just know that like with any hard and fast rule, you may be alienating players who can help your team succeed. You have to decide between picking up the best players and picking up players that fit your mentality. In my experience, it's always better to have a group of people with similar goals and habits.

This is really insightful. I've thought a fair bit about that balance between skill and compatible personalities before. It's interesting to see it in someone else's words.

My observation and opinion of shit talking.

When communicating through text over the internet or video game. The words typed(and sometimes said) will oftenly be taken out of context. The dialogue going on between two parties can go from playful to mean depending on many factors such as emotions, personalities, cultural norms, and values.

Frankly, it's just not as easy to tell what a person is conveying through text than face-to-face.

When party misconstrues a statement from another party it usually starts a downward negative spiral of an online relationship, aka "talk shit get hit". And it snowballs until one party stops before the shit-talk is interpreted as truth by multiple people in a community and then it becomes really bad as it spreads and spreads. Due to the lack of conversational interests and passions from most "hardcore" gamers.

An extreme but common example of 2 low/mid strangers looking to get into comp
Dude A wallshots Dude B in a pub while suspended only 2 feet in the air
Dude A admirably says: nice shot, you're really good at that lol(he actually thought it was an airshot and has never seen one)
Dude B interprets as sarcasm and gets offended because he's played hours of MGE and considers wallshots simple.
Dude B, a well respected person of the TF2 community retaliates by talking mad shit in Dude A's lft thread off personal rumors(racist, sexist, drug user, criminal, etc) he dug up off other online people.
Dude A wonders why Dude B would do that and tries to communicate to come to a resoulution.
Dude B ain't havin it and refuses to listen.
Dude A gets upset after people keep asking him if the rumors were true and refers to the "talk shit get hit" principle.

That's why a large number of the people that go to TF2 lans tend to not take any initiative to meet one another. Grow up, take responsibility and be willing to forgive. The sad realization is that the social norms in real life are crafted by extroverts as they tend to be doing most of the socializing. Introverts are way to complex and less willing to communicate unless certain factors are met. And honestly, it's probably because of dull unfullfiling lives or trying to escape unfavorable situations. People come from all different viewpoints.

I generally try not to shit talk but unfortunately you gotta flex sometimes to show the fake ass niggas whats up. Relax, take it easy, sleep on it. Disrespecting and slandering people ain't cool.

If opponents shittalking distract you then hud_saytext_time 0

If your teammates shittalk to hype the team and raise the moral then its perfectly fine.

If your teammates shittalk due to anger then it demoralizes the team.

However I know some people who get bitchy and whiny when one of their own teammates tries to hype up their team by shittalking. Those people have no real competitive drive and shouldn't play competitively

I love shit talking in matches, especially when i get a lucky ass frag that was not deserved at all. Don't mean anything bad by it, but it helps me vent some of the stress from the match towards my opponent.

If you can't handle a bit of shit talk, pack it up and give up competition, you'll find it at every level and you just need to find ways to deal with it, even if you don't wish to participate in it.

i only shit talk people for 3 reasons:

  • they're clearly better than me (and therefore should understand its a joke)
  • they're clearly worse than me but are being cocky (and therefore deserve it)
  • they're my friends (and therefore understand its not hostile)

i cant think of another legitimate reason to shit talk someone

as a player, you're competing against people. if you're at all competitive it's only natural to want to trash talk.

for spectators, shit talk makes people more invested in games. i know when squid and lansky were going back and forth that one lan i was actually legitimately hyped to watch tf2 for the first and only time because it felt like there was a lot more on the line, and waiting for one of them to shit on the other and then let them know they did was sick.

i mean if someones life is in shambles and you start going after that it's a bit much (family/money/gf or bf problems, etc), but telling showstopper he only has a goatee because all the friction from men's thighs rubbing against his face as they ride him has destroyed those hair follices is a-okay imo.

what im saying is talk more shit people. it's entertaining, and part of the game. if you could make clockwork miss 80% of his shots, you would. if you can put someone on tilt, why shouldn't you?

We both know it is, owl is the biggest scumbag shit talker in all our MM games. ESPECIALLY when hes at the bottom. What a big bully.

I think it's funny that people are defending themselves being cunts by saying "It tilts the enemy team" because there's literally nobody who takes in game tf2 chat seriously
however I still think shittalking is fine

i don't think there's any competitive activity where there isn't any shittalk

i have friends that play games like golf and pingpong and they trashtalk opponents and vice-versa often

there is definitely a line where shittalk gets too personal, and i think that's where it's actually a problem
i think most people shouldn't let it get to them even if it gets too personal, because why should those peoples opinions even matter if they're just garbage people irl

Don't think there's really anything wrong with it as long as the ever present cool/not-cool border isn't crossed, even though I'm not really a fan of it myself (and will reign in teammates if I think they're going overboard with it). Even then, I still can't help but partake from time to time; there's an aspect of plain old human nature to it, I feel. Sometimes you just gotta.

And between good friends of course it's just no-holds-barred extra-spicy roasty toasty funtime

Besides I'm not exactly the hardest player in the world to tilt and even still, if I ever find myself getting genuinely distracted or annoyed by shittalk because I'm already in a bad mood or whatever it's easy enough to just hud_saytext_time 0 and be done with it if it's really a problem
