Has potential, and I guess the console guys might be more excited about it than the keyboard/mouse crowd.. I was really hoping for Source engine 2 to be announced, alongside a flagship game to showcase the new engine. Something to get people hyped to play on the new console.

Whyyyyyyyy? We are PC gamers, we want mouse+keyboard, all a controller does is make your aim worse.

My first bet proved true, well the controller does look somewhat original, just need to know how it will feel

Hot damn Valve dropped the ball with this one. Should have shown us the controller first instead of building us up and then "wow it's a controller". Really cool features notwithstanding, it's a controller. I have nothing else to say about it except yeah that might be cool in the future and sure I'd be hella hype to get a beta controller but whatever.

However, I'd feel foolish if I didn't leave myself a comment insurance policy just in case much more info comes out so I will say that if the trackpads are sensitive enough, it'll be a superior alternative to standard analog controllers for FPS games on consoles.

DroidsterWhyyyyyyyy? We are PC gamers, we want mouse+keyboard, all a controller does is make your aim worse.

Controllers are superior for a few game types, this controller is mostly meant for living room couch based stuff where you probably aren't using M&K anyways, and touchpads are at least going to more accurate than analog sticks.

DougHow would you play a game like Devil May Cry with those buttons positions?

The 4 inner buttons are not really meant to be hit often, as you can see from the Portal 2 example.

Left touchpad = move/interact in menus
Tap Left touchpad = jump/confirm in menus
Hold left touchpad = lock on target on/off
Right touchpad = control camera
Tap right touchpad = change lock on target
Hold right touchpad for a bit = reset camera
Bottom of the backside of the controller left button = Switch close range weapon
Bottom of the backside of the controller right button = Switch long ranged weapon.
L1 = Long Range Attack
R1 = Close Range Attack/Cancel Menu Selection
L2 = Devil Trigger
R2 = Examine/Style Action
One of the buttons on the bottom of the front of the controller = taunt/pause/
4 inner buttons = Open Item/File/Map/Equip menus

That's how I'd do it anyways. (DMC3)

This actually kind of makes me quite a bit more interested in the Steam Box than I was before. It's quite different from the controllers we see nowadays and should offer a lot more precision than an analog stick.

That said this is the only thing new they're announced this whole week, so overall it's pretty underwhelming.

The haptic feedback thing is the coolest part did you guys even read that. Touch feedback so fine controlled that they can actually play sounds with it if they want to. Of course it will depend on how creative devs get with it but I think we'll see some cool stuff with valve championing it and probably providing really good developer support.

The touchpads are also a really neat idea if they are high quality enough. Analog controls where distance moved = time held are the bane of my console existence. It probably won't be quite as good as a mouse for competition but certainly much more comparable than traditional analog sticks and I could actually see myself enjoying shooters played with this device.

Time will tell but I think it looks really promising.

The touchpad idea is interesting. If those and the touch screen work well enough together it could be really neat. It's a hell of a lot better than all this motion control bullshit that's been attempted in the last few years. I'm excited but reasonably skeptical.

I don't think console players are going to want to use this, it's way more complicated than a console controller. PC players will just want to use kb+m. Unless this turns out to cure cancer or something I don't get it.

yeah I think that controller seems pretty cool. The touchpads are definitely something I wasn't quite eXpecting. I have some misgivings about the button placements but there are four up top and two underneath, 6 buttons is a pretty good start. All the touch screen stuff sounds pretty cool as well.

Will be interesting to really see how FPS's/RTS's work on this.

i would rather see the touch pads inverted, so they are sticking out of the controller, instead of having to stick you thumbs in there, making it hard to press other buttons.

Side note, I want one of those touchpads on my performance mouse MX, right where the thumb rests. Might have to get one of those controllers and strip it for the purpose of modding my existing peripherals.
