bothering*

ive noticed there are a lot of NR6s cups.
do people that exclusively play NR6s exist, or is it just a way to get some more (low quality) gametime in? i'm just wondering how popular it really is, and why these leagues even exist.

instead of playing NR6s we should be playing HR6s (heavily restricted 6s), where all off-classing and gimmicky weapons are banned. and honestly, that sounds so much more fun.

as an addendum, why do people think that having less restrictions is fundamentally "better" than having more?

I miss the cups where we could test big changes that were actually considered for a regular season (whitelist, ruleset, plugins, etc.). NR6s and throwback cups feel like a goofy side thing that you might do sometimes if you get bored, I just don't see how you can get any meaningful feedback out of them.

If the goal is to "bridge the gap between casual and competitive players", then a fresh meat cup can accomplish that much better. New players aren't scared of weapon restrictions, they're afraid of signing up and getting crushed by everyone / sandbaggers.

i don't think the problem is that they're running the cup, more that they're wasting everyone else's time by running this shit cup that 90% of the playerbase doesn't even want to play while there's a 2 month gap between seasons. if it's a weekend cup just run it ALONGSIDE the season instead of wasting another couple weeks.

They should just do an invite showmatch for money so we can have video proof of why 6v6 has an actual ruleset. There's way less time investment and whenever clueless pubbers whine you can just show them the match and they will be forced to reconsider everything they know about tf2

this video exists and while it does have a good chunk of views, i don't think it's quite the reality check for any confused casual players as to why anything is banned, froyo still shitstomped cat noises anyway even while memeing with uncle dane on their team; which is probably the thing pubbers seem to care about more in this video than "wow this looks really unfun to play", but this is also a fault of these matches mostly being payload and not 5cp/koth.

idk though. im open to another showmatch being done if its in the name of making the base 6s format seem more justified/reasonable/fun. (or it could just end up like we're talking to a brick wall).

^yeah i remember this showmatch existting but I never really took it seriously because the the teams are imbalanced and I dont think either team ever truly went full aids unlock/lineup abuse mode.

dqzI miss the cups where we could test big changes...ikinclark561i don't think the problem is that they're running the cup...

I agree with both of these. What's even more unfortunate is that with ETF2L announcing that they want to add a new map to the pool next season and making a poll for it, this would have been the perfect space in which to run a map test cup to trial the maps. This would let people vote in a more informed way, and give some last minute feedback to the mappers in case issues are spotted in the cup (so the fix can happen before the season). Aside from entropy and subbase (which had non-ETF2L run cups in 2023), it feels like nowadays almost all 6s map cups are in NA.

Benplthey want to add a new map to the pool next season

two maps. they're adding two maps at a time, one of which is completely untested.

which map wasn't tested? the 3 in the poll have all been played in rgl map test cups and we played subbase last season (below d1)

ok sorry, I wasn't aware they were played in NA.

are people asking to have these maps added in EU?
imo adding two new maps at a time is too much.

im happy to try subbase, and i think its good to have active mappers who update the maps to fix issues.
(bagel is great)

I dislike NR6s like no other, but do I misremember ETF2Ls reasoning for hosting them being that actual casual players get to try out 6s? Unsure whether that's actually the case, has anyone made experiences with casual players specifically trying out comp due to NR6s?

I don't think having another cup subtracts from everything else, if anything it gives more options for people to try what they feel comfortable trying. I get the question of would there be more value gained if this cup was some other format, and what is there to learn from this cup if anything, which is what I assume this thread was originally meant to be discussing. I don't have the answer to those questions but I'm hoping there will be some insight from those playing this cup in the form of a survey to discuss the current unlock bans and if etf2l needs to change anything. I know some already established higher div players wanting to play the cup because of a weapon ban that they feel is unjust and this is their chance to use it.

Now that the fixtures are out, I am noticing a couple of teams of people with no experience signed up, this being their first cup. One I've talked to personally a bit because they had questions. Now I don't know if they would have signed up if it was any other format, but it seems that there is still a place for cups that are low commitment one day only kind of vibe, most teams not caring about playoffs on sunday (because of availability and the fact the first day is more important to even guarantee it). This goes for any div of course, the more cups the better. I remember reading someone (already in late stage tf2comp-ism) from another thread saying they would love to play comp but not having the scheduling and not being dedicated enough for a whole season.

ikinclark561i don't think the problem is that they're running the cup, more that they're wasting everyone else's time by running this shit cup that 90% of the playerbase doesn't even want to play while there's a 2 month gap between seasons. if it's a weekend cup just run it ALONGSIDE the season instead of wasting another couple weeks.

I don't understand this, how is time wasted? If it's about admins choosing to spend energy on it instead of a different cup, alright, I understand. I see players that genuinely want to try it, should we not have more options for newcomers? If the cup exists or not, it doesn't change anything for you, it's a supplement, you don't have to play.
The 6s season gap is for highlander, highlander grand finals for all divisions end on may 31st, and on june 1st the 6s season starts. With the cup or without it, this wouldn't change. If anything it gives something to do while we wait for 6s.
I think it's good this way, if the cup was in the middle of the 6s season, I could see 6s players getting burnt out. Also if newcomers have a good time with the roster they had they might join the regular season right after? One can hope.

hYm3nSl4yras an addendum, why do people think that having less restrictions is fundamentally "better" than having more?

This imo is the real question. I for one am fully meta-pilled so to say. I would love if we only played stock + basher, gunboats ( + maybe banner/conch idk), escape plan, katana, crossbow, kritz, solemn vow (spicy), ubersaw, and nothing else. That is peak tf2 for me. But that is just my opinion, there are people that would hate this, no doubt. Having this discussion is important, and blaming a cup for existing isn't right. No hate to OP, I think the questions are valid, but the thread has derailed a bit.
