about 2 weeks ago i turned on my pc and i get a screen that says my C drive will be scanned and repaired and it gives me 10 seconds to skip the scan and repair.

its been happening every time i turn on my pc since then, and i've let it scan and repair about half of the time since then

I tried manually doing the scan just like the google told me to by going here:

Show Content

but i still get the message every time i boot my pc

does anybody know the problem? dont really want my C drive to fail on me randomly and have to buy a new one

chkdsk C: /F /R

Have your PC reboot and actually have it complete the scan and don't skip it.

Like USB drives it probably has the flag set for 'requireScan' that won't clear until it actually has run its scan in full.

Also for your own sanity have a full HDTune sector scan run (untick the 'fast check'), which could take hours on a big (and mechanical) drive.
chkdsk C: /F /R
when i said " i've let it scan and repair about half of the time since then"
i meant 1 out of 2 times i turned on my pc i would let it scan

Solid chance the drive is failing. HDtune is a great suggestion, but anything that gives even a basic smart check should be fine to start. Is it an ssd? If the full sector scan comes back without any problems you've got some sort of windows thing going on. I would back anything important up ASAP either way.

not sure if this is the same as the full sector scan but i did an error scan and got this back.

any continued advice beyond "back up ASAP"

it most likely does have bad blocks since windows wants to repair it. backing it up is the best thing you can do to be 100% sure you wont lose any data. it doesnt look like the drive is about to fail so what you could do is boot up a linux live usb, create an image of the drive, get a new one and restore that image. that way the new drive will practically be a carbon copy of the first one.

probably not the reason but i'll still mention it just in case you have valorant but vanguard, the game's anticheat, causes this as well.

I have Valorant as well as Vanguard installed, but I never play the game. I’ll uninstall later today and see if it fixes my problem.

after installing Valorant and Vanguard, it completely fucked my Windows install. Deleted all registry entries for Windows Defender and Windows Update, had to reinstall.
And no, before anyone says it was a virus, I built the PC 20mins before that happened and Valorant was the first thing I installed.
Be wary of Vanguard.

I would probably just recommend replacing the SSD and reinstalling. Its a hassle but it will save you a lot of bullshit troubleshooting and is the best way to avoid further problems that may come along with other fixes. SSDs are pretty cheap now and getting a new one will streamline backing up files since you can leave the old one plugged in temporarily for the transfer. I know money is tight right now for a lot of people but if replacement is at all an option I'd really recommend it.

It MAY be worth reinstalling or refreshing windows but I'd say its a slim chance that would help.

uninstalled vanguard and the scan and repair actually completed. didnt even realize it didnt actually start the repair until now when the text change and it gave me updates on how complete it was

i rebooted and i didnt have to scan and repair.

rebooted again, and i got a "windows may not have launched properly" or something like that message, i just continued past it and here i am typing this post right now.

i dont think skipping that screen was a good idea looking back on it. but windows seems to be just fine so i think its ok?

thank you all for your help :)
