Collaideout of curiosity, any tf2 linguists out here wanna explain when we started calling americans burgers?

also someone should make a urban dictionary post about it too

Pejoratives have long been used to distinguish groups of people on superficial value or that groups most outstanding feature. When comparing cultures are face value, the easiest assets to compartmentalize and distinguish against would be food, dress, language, and traditions. Most non-Americans already know the stereotypes of being fat, eating unhealthy foods, being mobility scooter bound, being gun crazy, speaking one and only one language, being racist, and having incestual tendencies, and various insults and slurs can and have already be derived from these stereotypes.

The term "burger" shares the same genetic prose as the term "kraut", which was used in America and the Anglophone world at large to describe Germany and German speakers of any country, which was most popular during WW2 and the post-war and early Cold War periods. While there are obvious differences between German speakers in different countries and even with Germany herself, the term had such popularity because it associated an entire umbrella group of people to a uncommon and insignificant dish in American cuisine; sauerkraut. The terms usage at the height of its popularity carried a very heavy negative connotation, as many Germans and German speakers faced hostility during WW1, WW2, and the post war era. Sentiments have for the most part died down in our current day and age, and the term, while being dated and annoying, is most often used in friendly banter, since most Americans don't really carry any resentment towards Germany or any European country for that matter.

"Burger" is used in much the same way. Its an umbrella term for all people living in America and Canada, regardless of race, age, and socioeconomic standing. Hamburgers are the quintessential American food, you could walk into any bar, restaurant, fast-food joint, or any other place that sells food, and you would have an almost 100% chance of being able to purchase a hamburger in one form or another (unless that particular vendor specializes in something that would traditionally exclude burgers and other 'American' foods; pizza joints, ethnic restaurants, ice cream parlors etc). The burger in American culture is almost as ubiquitous and symbolic as the bald eagle, Ford F150's, and police brutality.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I am almost certain the exact term "burger" used to describe Anglo-speaking Americans and Canadians comes from fucking polandball comics. Polandball comics, for the uninformed, are web comics that use the culture and outwardly appearance of a particular country as main characters, the purpose of the countryballs is to represent the macro-generalization of a particular country. Since the comics are most often written in English, non-English speaking countries are typically portrayed using broken English, usually involving the linguistic features of that country's common language (ie, Russia, Poland, and other Slavic countryballs not using definite and indefinite articles when speaking English, since most Slavic languages lack this feature; China- and Mexicoball using xixixi and jajaja instead of "hahaha" respectively, etc). Since most countries in the comics are displayed as being dumb, ignorant, our out of the loop, stereotypes and pejoratives are often used for comedic effect. Since burgers are a staple American food that has seen a rise in popularity overseas thanks to America's cultural imperialism, most countryballs refer to Americaball as "burger".

To answer your question of when tftv in particular started using burger, that's harder to pin down, since people online have been calling Americans "burger" for sometime now, and it seems to have the most usage on sites like reddit and 4chan, where various other memes have incorporated the term "burger". I'd probably say from my own experience lurking on this website that "burger", "leaf" and "euro" became most popular around the time ESEA stop supporting tf2 in NA. Now that there was no unifying competitive 6v6 league in the NA scene, Americans and Canadians (and I guess Central Americans as well) were left with slim and grim options as to the future of their scene, while South American, European, and Asian leagues seemed to face no trouble at all. And since people love to kick other people when their down, I imagine the usage of the term, while not inherently negative or mean, started being wide spread to banter against poor burgerfags without a comp scene and forced to work sigafoos plantation.

i was going to post a thread about the protests (mainly because there have been riots in my city and idk wtf to do), but decided against it because mixing a gaming forum and politics seemed like a bad idea. i wish you had thought this post through a little more.

bill gates is conspiring with E! network to brainwash the world

I won't argue that there's no shady targeted marketing, but it's the proper PR move to follow lead of other major corporate companies immediately as topics go viral. you're reaching dude go hunt down those jewish internet shills if you really wanna take down control of the media

So is this guy just taking a nap? What's your point?

Call these race riots "protests" or whatever you want. Some are peaceful protestors, some are violent criminals. They might be robbing apple stores in the name of racial justice, but you would still be left with the fact that the supposed police racism they're protesting simply does not exist.

DOJ 2015 audit of the Philly PD concluding white cops are *less* likely to shoot blacks:

Do me the favor of responding seriously and I'll hear you out. The sources I posted don't diminish the tragedy of individual cases of proven police brutality, like the one that triggered all this. They indicate that there is not a general trend of police discriminating against blacks specifically.

it's not about the amount of black vs white ppl who get killed... it's the reason they get killed which you can't quantify as evidence

trying to act like systemic racism is not blatantly obvious is actually insane to me. idk if u just live in a part of the US SO in your own bubble that you can't see it, maybe that's just me living in a heavily interracial part of Michigan (10 minutes outside of Detroit). But when I tell you with whole heart confidence that the VAST MAJORITY of cops in mostly white cities near me are extremely racist, you BETTER believe it. I know people who are close to cops, I know people who've applied to the academy, I've been told AND SEEN FIRST HAND blatant discrimination against black people. If you wonder why there's no ridiculous (to the point of it being very obvious it was on purpose) videos of cops killing unarmed white people? It rarely to never happens.

Also I could write a little essay on how the privatized prison system is actually just slavery in disguise, and how the term "policing" is inherently racist towards african americans + police were originally designed to put them in prisons to mimic what was lost with slavery ! But i have to play competitive tf2 and I'm sure u can read a book or something !

When people are this brainwashed by the media, that's exactly who they go to for validations for their actions. What would have been a partisan debate just 5-10 years has turned into most media inciting violence and categorically suppressing outside viewpoints. The end game here is, they want to polarize our nation racially, and down party lines for the sake of identity politics and talking points
It’s working

This is all a pervasive gaslight;

Black people do not get systematically murdered in this country by any group besides themselves, police included. So when someone posts something that seems like a measured response to this lie, it’s easy to feel like a revolutionary who is standing up against tyranny. I won’t lie and say this is the problem I’m trying to get at but let me explain how insidious this process really is.

1.) Like bear, people are manipulated that calling out police for misrepresented data points and figures is justified
2.) You become convinced that this is happening through the reinforcement of every single mogul you follow that doesn’t want to lose their platform. As well as the vast majority of media puppets.
3.) You are exposed to a manufactured and largely circulated counterpoint(s) that is supposed to representative of the other viewpoint, something that will attack not only your inaction towards their cause, but will vilify you for thinking wrong notice the jump from support of the “movement” to labelling those who argue against you as evil.)
4.) The narrative is manipulated to incite even more unrest. People vastly underestimate how fucking parasitic this type of journalism is to our country. At this point it should be obvious how the media pokes at our most sensitive issues as a nation and creates an environment where the more fucking lawlessness they provoke the more people will buy into it, and the easier it to propagate. This is pure evil.
5.) All of this is recycled into a nice little ideology of being an “ally” to the very doctrine that not only manipulated you from the get-go, but likely fueled an incomparable amount of violence/distrust towards whichever group you think you’re protecting.
6.) Our Nation burns for corporate gain and approval ratings
7.)They will cry out as they strike you

.

This is all a pervasive gaslight;

As I implied before, clearly there are racist individualcops, some of whom discriminate against blacks. But when you talk about statistics you're talking about net effects. Here's a white Minneapolis woman being killed by a black cop, does this mean whites are being discriminated against? I don't recall any protests.

Study finding White cops are actually more hesitant to shoot blacks:

Zigarell 2018 finds that US Whites exhibit if anything, a bias in favor of blacks:

How does your worldview incorporate statistics like this? If you have a counternarrative, write it out.
