MXR makes a pretty good one.

If you're in the market for some dirt, the Darkglass B7k Ultra is a monster, and I've heard good things about their Alpha-Omega as well.

Also, how has no one mentioned Wojtek Pilichowski yet?

The Ibanez SR series basses are some pretty nice instruments.

I would look at the SR650; it has a nice thin neck, P/J pickup configuration, 3-band eq, and an eq toggle switch if you want to rock the pickups in passive mode.

G&L makes some affordable J bass and P bass style basses.

Otherwise, Fender Jazz basses are pretty much the gold standard, and well worth the ~$600US investment for a Mexican made model.

In the end, it boils down to what feels best for you. Try out as many basses as you can, and try to buy used whenever possible.

yeah the bass ive been using for like 10 years now is a squier j bass that i had set up professionally to get a bit of a better sound and play out of it but im probably going to want to leave a bass at my bands studio so i dont have to transport it, which means its time to upgrade lol.

problem with the squier i have to stretch my hands really far and its pretty tough to play fast as i expect ill have to do soon, so i want something that i can play really quickly. do you recommend american/mexican/japanese fenders or does it not matter?

+1 on ibanez SR basses, some of the best pieces of wood you will ever spend your money on.

On American/Mex/Jap, in my opinion for the price difference between Mex/Jap and Americans it's not super worth it? I've got a Mex Jazz Deluxe and apart from the bridge it's entirely capable of professional use. iirc some Jap basses from the 90s are meant to be fantastic. Also anytime you get a Fender immediately get it set up professionally, the factory/shop set ups tend to be dogshit

i have a usa j bass and its wonderful and i highly reccomend it. you can find mexican ones that play better than certain american ones so strongly suggest you go to a guitar center or something and try a bunch out.

as far as comfort playing its definitely way easier to play a j bass than a p bass because the neck is thinner and ive always felt it doesnt matter what youre playing, a j bass can do it jsut fine

for metal specifically though fanned frets can be nice if you drop tune a lot

nah i dont drop tune a lot, but yeah because of just how many factors there are that affect how the bass sounds and plays im thinking of just going into a music shop and just playing a whole bunch of basses to help me decide if there are any features that i would want/not want. or maybe i should just stop worrying about all that and just buy a fender ._.

edit i say "just" a fuckin lot lmfao

Both are early 90s Ibanez. The 5 string is an EMG loaded CT5B, the 4 string is an early SR300 with active Ibanez pickups. Both play really well but I prefer the 5 string for messing around cause it's fun to have an extra string to mess around with.

I also have two guitars, an Epiphone Explorer Pro-1 that I found cheap that I put some thicker gauge strings on and tuned way down. Considering changing the pickup to something tasty. The other one is a Chapman ML-2 Modern that I absolutely love. Really good guitar for the money. I'd absolutely recommend testing one out if you can and if you're looking for a mid-range guitar.
